Traveling from Josnp, forty-three

destroyed seven stores, which, with
contents, were valued at $100,000.—
Their fire department seems to be out
of fix os well as that of other cities.
The E. T., V. & G. E. R. Co. are
finding some trouble with the City
Council of Atlanta in the matter of
getting in and out of that city, and
plaoe for their simps, depots, etc.—
The city of Macon, appreciating the
situation, bos offered them all tho
space they need, contiguous to their
road, for their shops. We guess At
lanta will come into measures and
give them what they ask.
The new eating house at Waycross,
under the management of the 8., F.
& W. Railway Co., is now finished
and in chargo of Mr. P. McGuire, of
New York. The bill of fare, as pub
lished by the Reporter, is certainly
first-class, but tho question arises,
will the trains that stop there for
meals (five in number oaoh day) tarry
long euough for a fellow to enjoy such
a repast ? Nino courses require more
than ten minutes to discuss.
The Waycross Reporter has sound
ed the tocsin for a revival of tbo old
whig party of Georgia instead of what
is now known ns the Independents.—
Snob a move, wo believe, would be
very popular, os there ore hundreds
now voting with the Democratic par
ty who would gladly roturn to first
love and first principles. We are not
sure, however, that tho time has yet
come for tho movement.

A French woman, about forty years
oi age, was recently found in tku
woods near Albany, Go. After secur
ing an interpreter, it wns found that
sho and her husband lived in Pensa
cola, and about Christmas had sturted
for Eufaula. At some station at which
they changed cars he deserted her,
and she, not knowing what to do, and
being unable to spook English, and
chagriuned and stung to the quick,
took to the woods, and had been
roaming about ever since (about thir
ty days), living on mushrooms, etc.—
She w as a sad looking specimen, and
appeared crazy until she beard the
soothing words of her native tongue.
Sho has been sont to Eufaula, in
search of her hfifibsnd.

M been but little disturbed, which
ives the place a very attractive look,
think that I have already described
the appearance and manner of growth
of the live oak sufficiently to give tbo
regular reader a very good idea of it,
but to make sure of this, I will, be
fore proceeding further, take up the
subject more thoroughly. In the first
place then it is an evergreen, the
leaves being of irregnlar, oval shape,
about an inch long and of a very dark
green, with the upper surface slightly
waxen. The tree grows with a round
spreading top very similar to a thrifty
apple tree, only mneh larger, com
monly attaining a height of seventy-

trunk separates into its immense
branches is seldom more than thirty
feet from the ground. Brunswick is
scattered through nn open forest of
the largest kind of these handsome
trees, which half conceal the buildings
from view, and many of the streets
have tho appearance of broad paths
through virgin woods. But what
makes the scene more peculiar and at
tractive is the heavy masses of silver-
gray southern moss, which in festoons
from one to five feet long bang iu
beautiful fringes from every limb. So
unfit for use and will surely bring dis
aster upon us. This is a measure of
vital importance to the oontinoaoce

tons of it might be gathered from
some of these groups of trees on a

of gray and tho dark green and dark-

oaks, especially when tho sun is glint

Brunswick bus a good harbor, which
is, iu fact, a narrow iulot from tho sea
twelve miles distant. It has a wharf-
ago of fully three-fourths of a milo, in
front of which the chnnnel is about
150 yards wide, with twenty-four feet
of water over tho shonlost spot .be
tween the town and tho sea. Its prin
cipal article of comraorco is lumber.
The two roads that terminate here,
tho Brunswick and Albany and the
Mucon and Brunswick, both of which
intersect vast timber regions, bring
nearly or quito 600,000 feet of lumber
to the wharves daily, which is sent to
all parts of tho world. Thero were
about twenty vessels, most of them of
the largest doss, at tho wharves,
among which were three Spaniards.—
Noxt to lumber comes naval stores in
the commeroo of this port, and there
is considerable cotton shipped also.
There are a largo number of North
ern people permanently located in
Bruuswiok, and I met also several
transient visitors, mostly from the
New England States.

work of thit'kind be done dating the *

put in the best possible Stinitnry con

sideration some plan for the removal
of the contents of privies and other
filth from the most thickly settled
portions of the city. With increase
of population, the plan now pursued
of burying such matters in tho earth
will soou render our drinking water
suggestions or recommendations for
your consideration:
"1. Thef printing of tbo quarantine
ordfollfoerttf the city iu the - Spanish
language, a translation of which has
been furnished, a*. ~y request, by Mr.
Torras. “I presume the necessity that
tfce pilotr should beftnabled to place

vtotis to y6tt without argument.
•2; Thatydu appoint Mr. Torras in
terpreter in' the Spanish, Italian, Ger
man and French languages; and that
he be empowered to collect a fee from
each vessel requiring his services.—
This will be a deserved compliment to
him to obtain remuneration for ser
vices which he has hitherto rendered
without reward
3. That the sum of $86.00 be ap
plied to the purchase of a boat for
quarantine purposes. I have already
bargained for, and have been nsing,
suitable boat, at tho above price,
very respectfully suggest that t-He
Health Officer is required to perform
large amount of work, free of
charge, for the city, and that he should
not be burthened with tho purchase
of a boat, which is to bo used solely
for the public service.
4. That you appoint a committee
with instructions to open communica
tion with the owners of the present
quarantine station, also, with the
owner of the North End of Jekyl Is
land, with the view to acquiring own
ership for the city in a permanent sta
tion for quarantine purposes. The
North End of Jekyl, at Clam Creek,
is the best point on the coast for the
purpose; and if authorized to do so, I
will interview Mr. DuBignon upon the
subject. In view of the prospective
increase of the commerce of the city
this is a question of vital importance
and should be considered as early os
practicable.
Under this head, I would urge the
immediate repair of the quarantine
dock—raising of the building, etc.
tho specifications for which can bo
furnished you by Mr. W. IV. Hardy, a
member of your Honorable Hody.
