highly was she esteemed by the of
ficers, patrons and pupils, that it was
with the deepest regret they heard of
her intention to offer her resignation.
,Vs a teacher she was thorough, pa

warm- hearted and true; as a wife she
was all that "one coumwisn in a life
companion—loving, tender and con

meek and trusting. But she has been
called to her other home, and, among
the radiant host on the other shore,
her spirit has taken its place, to beck

Personal,
Mr. J. M. Dexter is still copfined
to his bed.
It is refreshing to witness onr M.

Esq., in the discharge of his official
duties. In him the road has an able
officer.
Alfred Johnson, a colored drayman,
and Tatnall & Hibbard, colored ste

schooner Aaron Reppard. This speaks
well for them.
Messrs. W. F. Symmons & Co.
opened store this week at Gascoigne
Mills, on St. Simons Island. Mr.
Symmons is a worthy young man and
deserves to succeed.
Savannah has contributed some
clever specimens to the business men
of onr city. Among these we take
pleasure in memtioning onr yonng
friend J. H. Bolshaw, book keeper for
R. B. Reppard. He is worthy the
trust imposed in him.
Willoughby Read, the humorist, en

night with recitations from various
authors. From some cause the audi

would be greeted with a large house.
All honor to that noble widowed la

This fine schoonor has jnst been
completed, and lias mode her first
trip, bringing to Savannah a cargo of
coal and hay, and 'will bo loaded by
R. A. Reppard with lumber for Phila
delphia. Her next cargo will be tak
en from Brunswick, as she is designed
for the lumber trade of these two'
ports. Captain Lako is part, owner,
and is very proud of his beautiful
craft, a description of which is ap
pended hereto, taken from the Savan
nah Times,
“She was constructed at Petty’s Is
land, N. J., by Messrs. Doughty &
Kapclla last year. Her keel was laid
iu May and she was launched in De
cember, and if the work shown on this
schooner is any criterion to go by, we
are satisfied that the builders enjoy
an excellent reputation as superior
craftsmen. She is, with the excep
tion of the two lower keels and the
rails, constructed exclusively of Geor
gia pine, famished by the mills of Mr.
R. B. Reppard, in this State. The
length of the keel is one hundred and
forty-one feet, the depth of the bold
thirteen and one-half feet, and the
beam thirty-four feet. The length
over all ie one handled and eeventy
feet. She carries three masts and is
supplied with the Intest improved rig
ging and tackle, a patent stearing ap
paratus and two immeuso anchors
with ninety fathoms of chain attached
to each. Her tonnngo is 459 04 and
her official number 100,038. No one
can fail to admire the beauty of her
outlines. She is clippor built and sits
on the water as gracefully as a swuu.
Her cabin is divided into quarters for
the first and seooud mate and other
officers, which open into a spacious
dining room, whilst beyond is the pri
vate office and cabin for the captain,
and two or three small families, all
richly finished in ash, walnut, chest
nut and wild cherry, with gilt trim
mings, and supplied with handsome
carpet and laxarions upholstery. This
vessel is certainly a model of strength,
beauty and finish.”

float. Suddenly., tho line tightens,
the float disappeared, and the head
way of the boat was checked, and the
man at the capstan yelled out, “he’s
hooked!” I have been fishing but I
never saw the like of that. The fellow
rose to the surface of the water and
looked at us. He had about seventy-
five yards of line out by this time,
and actually, in a second, he made a
rush and jumped clear over the bow
of the steamer. The ladies then got
under shelter, aqd all hands helped to
hold that line. ' The fellow, when he
failed to eat us up, made for the ocean
and fairly made the waters foam. Af
ter about a mile’s run ho began to tire
and the boat was headed for the beach
on Jekyl Island. Gradually we pulled
in the line until the boat touched the
beach, and then one of the hands
waded ashore* taking the end of the
line with lum, whioh he made fast to
a stump and came buck for help. Four
of ns got on shore und commenced to
pull Mr. Shark ashore. It took all we
could do, aud two rifle balls to boot,
to land him. When I tell you that he
measured seventeen feet ten and one-
half inches from tip to tip .you will
know wbat a job we had. Wo deter
mined to prove that we canght this
shark, so we gave two negroes $4.00
to cut him open, and get his head off,
so that we could get his jaw over
home. His teeth are wonderful, be
ing about three and a qnarier inches
long, and so strong that lie actually
flattened out the big iron hook. The
negroes made quite a prize. lu his
stomach they found eleven silver Mex
ican dollars and ono Spanish doubloon,
gold, and a whole lot of old briiss but
tons.
(Note.—Ye landlnbbere, don’t you
know sharks don’t swim in these wa
