Prof. J. C. Lynes of Shorter Col
lege was here lost week in the itoterest
of bis College. We learn he will be
back again at an early day. Shorter
College is well equipped, both with
teachers and apparatus. r .
We learn from tbe Board of Edu
cation that they have secured as
Superintendent tbe services of Prof.
Gilson, a southerner by birth but for
a number of years a resident of Iowa.
The Professor was here last winter
and so well pleased that he desired to
return. He comes well yeoomrnoned.
CoL Collins has sold bis residence
here to Mr. J. H. McCullough. He
is also negotiating with parties for
the sale of bis mill on St. Simons.
This seems to point very decidedly
toward a move. We are sorry to
have him go. Later. Mill sold to
Ga., Land & Lumber Co. The Col
onel will soon leave for his new home
in Leadville, Colorado.
Rents have taken an upward ten
dency; especially for stores and places
of business. In one or two instances
landlords havfe demanded eighty
per cent advance'for the coming year
and tented accordingly. We trust

We know of a gentleman in town
who some months since hpd presented
to him a coop of fine chickens, and
be considered the prospect of an
abundant crop of shell frnit ns very
flattering. From actual calculation
he figures it OuA tba,t 'those chickens
i cost (including feed, care
and time) within the last five months
$1.25 each. He has harvested tbns
far three-quarters of a dozen of shell
frnit, which he valued at 18 j cents
which taken from tbe copt of culture
leaves him $20 out of pocket tot one

price tor eggs. He contemplates re
tiring from the business soon and liv

Resolved, by this meeting, That nye
sincerely deplore the misfortune
which prevents the presence, on this
occasion, of onr esteemed and honored
citizen, Hon. J. M. Tison; that we
sympathize deeply with the relatives
of our respected ex-Senator in this
sore affliction, and express the fervent
prayer that be may yet be restored to
health and a life of continued happi
ness and nsefnlness.

On Monday nigbt last tbe Bruns
wick Brass-Band gave one of tbeir
delectable open-air concerts at the
fair ground. The musie was, like it
always is, when Prof. Baumgartner
leads, peculiarly fine. The audience
was large and appreciative and.tbe
evening was enjoyed by every one
present. A friend soggests that by
way of rememeration, the ladies sell
refreshments at fature open-air con
certs and after paying actual cost of
