The East Tennessee, Vfrginto &
Georgia (Cole-Seney Syndi
cate) Railway, and its Re
lation to Brunswiok.
Tbis system of roads consists of the
East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia,
Seims, Rome and Dalton, and Macon
sod Brnnswick Railroad by ownership
and the Memphis and Charleston and
Noforlk and Western by lease or other
arrangement with northern connec
tions to New York, and proposed and
partially completed ‘connections to
Cincinnati, and partially completed
lines in the North from west to east.
Its Southern system of roads is
about 2500 miles in length, travers
ing five states.
When a charter was asked for this
system by which it could be consoli
dated nnderone management, and the
connection made with the Macon and
Brunswick by construction of 161
miles from Rome to Macon, at the
session of the Legislature in August,
1881, its then President, Col. E. W.
Cole, announced to a legislative com
mittee that the road from Macon to
Atlanta should brdt>en to travel by
July 4th, 1882, and to Rome by Sep
tember. Not a single yard of the
line had then been graded. Col.
Cole’s promise of construction to At
lanta was kept within two days, the
first train having been run over the
road July 6tb, 1882. His promise
of completion to Rome has been fully
kept 161 miles of railroad and 18
miles of sidetrack in 12 months is
rapid enough raiload building even
for this rapid age, and much of the
work was aooomplisbed in a Winter
\ distinguished for mud and run.
While this work of construction has
been going on, an equally important
work has been carried on at this city,
the south AtlaUtio terminus of this
this system of toads. Two thousand
feet of water front on Turtle river,
north of the city, has been purchased,
a track constructed out ovUr the marsh
3000 feet to deep water, and a'fan
shaped track, the open part of the
fan on the river and narrowing grad
ually as it goeBbaokto the high land,
filled in With solid earth, in front of
which a wharf has been constructed
600 feet in length, to which ten more
tracks diverging to the right and left
of the main track reach along its
whole extent. A creek runs at right
angles to the wharf at its northern
extremity, along whioh an immense
guano and other commercial manure
warehouse is to be constructed, and
a very large freight warehouse at
right angles to and in roar of
the wharf is already constructed.
The wharf is constructed in the most
solid and workmanlike manner, and
protected along its whole front by sub
stantial palmetto oribbing. There is
ample room between the eleven tracks
for hundreds of thousands of feet. of
lumber and thousands of bales of
eotton, and the 1400 feet of water
front owned by the Company. to the
south give ample room for expansion
to meet the demands of increased bus
iness. Already the company are doing
a heavy badness over the new line
from Rome to Macon and soon it ' is
expected will very hugely increase
their business at this port
The leading owners in this syndi
cate, with leading owners'in Sir Ed
ward Reed’s syndicate in Florida, have
procured a charter in Georgia and
Florida for a railroad from some point
in Glynn county to Hart's Road In
Florida, making a continuous inde
pendent line into Jacksonville, Flori
da. Gen. Thomas ia President; Msj.
Fink, General Manager ; Maj. John
F. O’Brien, General Snperindent;
Maj. W. V. McCracken, General Su
perintendent of the Company'll roads
in Georgia, and Mtij. J. E. Mallory
superintendent of the M. & B. Division
of the KYHteui from Macon to Bruns
wick—all are able and practical rail
road men, and we may safely rest as
sured have not invested the large
amount of capital in docks, filling in,
warehouses, &c., without a fall de
termination to utilize it to its utmost
capacity, 1 and to develop a polioy
which will largely increase in the near
future.
The Company has always been for
tunate in the selection of its agents
at this point, and it is but just to an
able and energetic gentleman to say
thailffr. J* & BrowD, tho present
agent, is a reliable and thorough go
ing 1 agent, and that the business of
the Company and shippers will be
thoroughly cared for under his man
agement, assisted as be is by Messrs.
Berryman, Hall and Hazlebnrst, who
have demonstrated by long service
their fitness for the positions they oc
cupy. ___________

Tbis house, while well known all
over the State, and in some parts of
Florida, is a new enterprise in our
city. Since it? establishment here,
we have watched it very closely, well
knowing that npon its success de
pended largely the future wholesale
trade of oar city.
We nre gratified to be able to stote
that it has prospered. far beyond the
expectations of the most sanguine,
and, by the large and complete stock
they cany, low prices and fair deal
ing, have succeeded to the patronage
which formerly sought Savannah and
Northern markets. Tbis is a*
should be. With the shipping facili
ties of our port, the nominal rates on
Eastern by sail, and tbe very favora
ble rates on Western goods by rail,
(being as low as Savannah or any
other port), and aided by abundant
capital, enterprise, an untarnished
business career of thirty-five years,
and a foil and competent corps of as
sistants in all departments, Messrs.
S. Mayer & Glauber are enabled to
offer tbeir patrons all the benefits and
advantages possessed by any bonsein
tbe State.
This bonso wsb established in Feb
rnary, occupying the first floor of tbe
building known as "Dillon’s bnild
ing," on Bay street. Very soon tbeir
extensive trade and large stock de
manded more room, and they now oc
cupy the entire building, (the largest
bnsiness house in tbe city) besides
over half of tho large warehouse
known as the E. T., Va. & Ga. Rail
road depot. In this building they
have a railroad track on each side,
thus enabling them to ship and re
eeive goods without the extra expense
of drayage, whioh item is saved to
their patrons. In addition to these,
they-oconpy separate warebonse room
for salt and other heavy goods.
Feeling a deep pride in tbe com
mercial prosperity of tbe city, we
made a personal inspection of this im
mense stock. On entering tbe house,
we found on the first floor several
hundred boxes tobacco, hundreds of
cases of each of canned vegetables,
fruits, fish, soaps, potash, eta, besides
several hundred bags of coffee. On
the second floor we found an ocean
of lighter goods—baking powders,
candies, crackers, nuts, grocers’ sun
dries and an endless variety of cigars
and pipes—onr time is too limited to
go into details. Crossing over to
tbeir warehouse, we found the largest
stook of liquors ever s«eu in this sec-
tloD.and riere informed by tho pro
prietors that some of tbeir liquors for
age «aud parity were not excelled
throughout the State. We uoticed
champagne; port, Rhine wine, cordi
als; and similar goods in enormous
quantities. They carry here a stock
of floor from five hundred to one
thousand barrels, besides sngar and
mackerel in car load lots.
In taking leave of tbis honse we
wish to add that we have neither time
nor space to do it justice, and trust
that our merchants who have not giv
en them a trial will do so at once, and
verify the truth of our assertion. We
sincerely trust that the day is no} far
distant when onr city can boast of
more such houses, not only in this line
but others.
