A Drokcr’s First Friglit*
I have frequently been caught short
the market and seen myself "within an
, ico of being ruined,” said n New street
t A'oker to a reporter; “but I was really
^scared only once in jny life, and that was
during my finK^ ' in the street. My
father got i in the office of an
uid friend of ills! where I enjoyed the
full confidence of my employer. I had
teen working only a few hours when ho
handed me ten crisp §100 hills and told
pie to deposit them in an uptown bank,
t put the hills in my coat jioeket until I
pail finished writing up my Isxiks and
pien took a-car going up town. When
entered the bank and put my hand
my jwcket the bills were gone,
can’t describe my feelings, for
simple reason that I iiadn’t
I felt myself turned to stone,
loth in mind and Ixidy I was stupefied,
t’licn I liad collected myself a little I
vent out of the bank with the expressed
htention of throwing myself into the
p er. I knew not where I went or what
Jwas doing, hut I found that I had re
turned to the office.
The broker was out when I got back,
was too numb to bo agitated, and no
“ me noticed there was anything the mat-
jA cer with mo us I put on my office coat
and liegan poring over the set of books.
It was not until I saw the broker coming
;.‘in tho floor that f began to fully realize
ifuiy position. I ran my hand wildly
‘ through my hair in a vain attempt to
calm myself, and then absent mindedly
put it in my pocket. The first thing I
felt was the roll of bills. I had changed
my coat and forgotten all about it. The
broker chided mo for not going to the
bank, hut he never know why the money
} wasn’t deposited until tho next day. ’ ’—

In Central California.
i Heretofore the eastern tourist lias been
| aecustomod to hear only of southern Cali-
| fornia and its so-called semi-tropical cii-
I mate, while scarcely anything has been
! said of the merits of the climate in cen
tral California. To such an extent has
this puffing of ono portion of the state to
the detriment of another seciion been
carried that many of tho eastern tourists
now visiting tho counties adjacent to tho
bay seem to.lxs surprised that fruits of
many kinds aro grown outdoors until
Christmas. Particularly is this so in re
gard to grapes. Some surprise lias been
expressed that tho lino grapes on exhi
bition at the rooms of tho state board of
trade should be found outside of Los
Angeles and San Diego counties, whereas
tile fact is that tiro best grapes grown
anywhere in California are produced out-'
side of southern California, and those
grown in Sonoma, Napa, Santa Clara and
along the eastern foothills of the Sacra
mento valley have never been surpassed
anywhere.
Another fact worthy of becoming
known is that there ripen in Butte county,
COO miles north of Los Angeles, and at
Los Gatos, in tho Santa Clara valley, some
fifty miles south of San Francisco, tho
first orange crops of this season. They
aro of fine quality and nearly two months
earlier than tho Riverside crops. In Santa
Clara county some of tho finest white
Verdel, Tokay and black Ferrara grapes
get ripe and ready for tho table at Christ
mas. In this samo county strawberries
and raspberries can also be had up to the
holidays.—San Francisco Alta.

Something About Dyapeptiin.
Chronic dyspepsia is a functional, not
an organic, disorder. If the eye could
look within the stomach, in tho latter
case, it would see no explanation of tho
trouble, ns in the case of organic diseases.
At least five kinds of fluids co-operato
in tho digestivo process: -saliva, gastric
juice, bile, pancreatic fluid and intestinal
secretions. Indigestion, therefore, does
not necessarily have its seat in tho
stomach.
Two forms of it are specially recognized
—gastric (that of the stomach) and in
testinal. Each form has two prominent
varieties: ono in which tho food is really
digested, while the porson lias a great
sense of discomfort; the other, in which
tho food is not duly digested, while tho
person has comparatively littlo suffering.
In tho first variety there is an abnormal
excitability of the nerves of sensation.
Tills is known as notvous dyspepsia.
Tho more common causes of dyspepsia
are excesses in eating, neglect of physical
exorcise, protracted anxiety, change from
an activo to a sedentary life, insufficient
sleep, luxurious living. .
No treatment can hero be described
suited to individual cases. Tho chief
thing is to find out and remove tho cause.
An overworked stomach should bo re
lieved by giving it only tho work which
it can do easily, and by furnishing to it
only that which is easily digested.
Everything should lx! done to improve
tho general health. Change of locality
and general surroundings is often a help.

A Good War Horae.
At a dinner not long ago one of the
guests remarked that Bavarian horses
were celebrated for their general worth
lessness. He said that a dealer sold one
to a German officer during tho Franco^
Prussian war, and warranted him to be a
good war horse. The soldier come back
afterward in a towering passion and said
ho had been swindled. “And liow?”
saifWho dealer. “Why, there is not a
bit of ‘go’ in him, and yet you warranted
jsa good war horse.” 1 “Yes, I did;
^^George! lie is a goqd war horse,
per die than run!”—Exchange.

Mr. M. A. Briggs: Some time ago
I bought live bottles of your Nunn-
better Tonic Pills for my wife, who
had been an invalid for four years,
Buffering with general debility, great
weakness, great nervousness, loss of
appetite, thick, sallow complexion,
a fullness of the stomach. She suf
fered from suppressed menstruation
(monthly sickness). Five bottles of
the pills made a new woman of her.
You may be assured I recommend
them. Yours respectfully,
