. Augusta’s Flood. »* The water has receded from the streets of Augusta, and the Savan nah river, though still high, is rapid ly getting back into its normal con dition. The receding waters disclosed many washouts in the pavements and streets, and great damage to fences and other property. The most serious loss to the city is the damage to the canal, her great • water power, the banks of which are broken in several places. The dam age to the canal is estimated at $200,- 000. Church furniture has been ruined, graves and vaults washed open, de bris scattered everywhere, dead bod ies foufad under upturned cars and in shanties, cattle found dead lodged in.the forks of trees, bridges washed away, immense holes in the streets, railroad tracks twisted like the let ter S, and ail land marks gone, but the people arc not cast down. They will clean away the debris at once, and will soon have their beautiful city in fine trim. They are still de termined too to toake their coming Exposition a grand success. Mayor May estimates the entire loss to the city and citizens at $1,- 000,000, and says that the city will be in much betlfer condition than be fore. Fortunately most of the loss is to parties able to bear it, and with in thirty days there will be nothing to indicate that the city was ever submerged and torn by rushing tor ments. Can’t Go Up. South Brunswick Terminal B. R- Llke numbers of others we- were led to suppose that the above 'Rail road scheme was visionary, both in fact and possibilities, but the more we look into the scheme and investi-. gate the people who are backing it up, the more convinced: are we that there is big possibilities in it for Brunswick, and not- only Brunswick but a big line of territory leading westward.’ The line in truth is not from Colonel’s Island to Waynesville, but covers a grander scheme by far, and one that is fraught with bigness for us.
