The popular idea of how the war cy-
cloramas, liko tho.Battlu of Gettysburg,
Battle of Shiloh, Battle of ChicSramaugii,
etc., arogainteU appears very laugliablo
to a person who knows how tlio work is
accomplished. Tho Battle of Gettysburg
and tho Siego of farts have been shown
for several years on oppcsito sides of
Hubbard court, in Chicago, and tlio stock
paid large dividends. Each was adver
tised as the work of celebrated French
artists, father and son, and tlio popular
idea is that these gentlemen painted them.
w Tho fact is that, beyond a general out
lining of tlio work, which was probably
faithfully made after maps procured from
authentic sources and a general direction
of the plan of the work, the artist in
chief had very little to do with it. No
man engaged in n battle sees it, and an
accurate painting of two armies in com
bat is impossible. The general features
only aro known. For instance, in tho
Gettysburg painting there are accurately
defined tho roads,Crown Hill, Little Crown
Hill, the wheat field in which a memorable
chargo was made, one or two buildings
which were headquarters of tho leading
generals, and with reasonable accuracy,
tho topography of tlio country is de
picted with excellent perspective. But
the details of tho battle, tho actual clash
of arms between this and that division
or brigade, is left a good deal to tho
Imagination,
The artist-in-chief hires some men to
put in tho sky, other men to put in tho
trees and foliage, other men to put in
the men in action. Attention is paid to
developing this or that memorable inci
dent. as in tlio Gettysburg painting, tho
death of tho cannoneer,' the amputation
of the soldier’s limb beside tho haystack.
Tako it all together, it makes up a
picture that is thrilling enough tp arouse
tho most intense interest on the part of
the old soldier. I remember standing by
the side of a veteran nt the .Chicago
picture of Gettysburg. He was explain-
’ iug to a companion tlio details of tho
fight, in which ho had borno an honor
able part. • “Say BUI, ” said lie, “at that
stone wall tlicro I lost my hat, and, by
gosh, if there ain’t the old hat lying
there yet 1” In painting pictures of bat
tles shrewd artists never fail to bestrew

Teaching Dogs Stago Tricks.
The pointer is tho most easily trained
of short hair dogs. Tho bulldog is much
more intelligent than is generally sup
posed, and, wliilo less ferocious than is
commonly believed, none is capablo of
greater affection. Mr. Stevens insists
that kindness is the principal factor in
training dogs. Other fanciers, however,
have long contended that brute force only
can bo relied upon.
Most stago tricks aro dono by cues or
signals, without attracting the attention of
the audience. “Romeo” selects any num
ber given by ono of tho audience. Blocks
upon which tlio ten numerals are painted
aro arrayed in a row on tho stage. Tho
dog has been taught to commence at tho
.extremo right, and a slight clearing in
-^_lk.Q-ll!Et3tby the master, unheard beyond
the footlights, is a cue for the dogtopas3
tho first, second, third, etc., until ho
reaches tho correct block. Silcnco then
gives consent, and tho trick is successfully
performed. It required two years of pa
tient training to teach Romeo to pick out
those numbers, his trainer said, although
tlio dog is a remarkably bright animal.—

It was pleasant to look at tho gang of
Greek immigrants that had been brought
to Castlo Garden by a steamship from
ono of tho Mediterranean ports. They
had como from tho vicinity of ancient
Athens to try their fortunes in New
York. It was evident to any ono who
looked at their garb as they set foot upon

tery park that they wero very poor jieo-
pie, whoso lives had been very hard, but
you could not find on this globe finer
specimens of any raco of mankind.
They would havo mado models for a
sculptor. Their figures had been cast in
an antiquo mold, worthy of tho timo of
