THE NATION’S WORKINC POWER.
tncrgy of Various Countries Kstlmntcd in
foot Tons—An Englishman's Tribute.
Among the many scientific papers read
at the recent meeting of the British asso
ciation in Bath, none possesses a higher
degree of interest than the brief mono
graph of Mr. Michael G. Mulhall on the
"Growth of American Industries and
Wealth." It is all the more interesting
because it is the work of a distinguished
English statistician, and so must be re
garded as free from any blemish of [ia-
tj iotic exaggeration.
To look upon tho picture which Mr.
Mulhall gives of tho astonishing life,
w -.dth and energy of tho United States
stirs the blood. In every one of tho
three principal sources of power—man,
horse and steam—we greatly exceed the
li-i-iitig nations of Europe, as will bo
seen from this table of Mr. Mulhali’s,
showing the aggregate energy of the
principal nations in millions of foot tons
daily:
Countries. Rond. Horse. Steam. Total.
L’lhled States 8,-lM 33,600 <8,400 69,4X1
t’cited Kingdom....a,S00 8.JW 38,900 52,930
France 5,090 8,500 18,150 WHO
<i -nnany 0,930 10,500 19,800 37,230
An inspection of this table shows that
in round numbers the working power of
the United States is three times as great
as that of France, two and one-half times
a« great as that of Germany, and one
and two-thirds times ns great as that of
the united kingdom of Great Britain and
Ireland. It is equal to that of tho two
greatest of tho older nations combined.
If there were any danger of tho re
public’s putting forth its gigantic strength
in aggressive warfare, thero would bo a
panic terror among tho powers across tho
ocean, that a hundred years ago beheld
its birth with indifferenco or contempt.
Moreover, as Mr. Mulhall shows, tho un
paralleled growth of this country has
only begun:
"At present the increase of indu 'ry,
energy and wealth goes on nnabai d.
Tie* next census in 18110 will probah'v
show a population of 00,000,000, with a.i
aggregate energy of almost 100,000.00:),-
Oul) of foot tons daily, nndan accumulated
wealth of 11,000,000,000 sterling, figures
never before applicable to any nation i:i
tlio world.”
Uncle Sam’s boys are not given to
vainglorious boasting ns much as t‘—y
Used to be. and perhaps one l'es- i is
that there is no need for them to imast.
A power like that which this republic
now possesses speaks for itself, and all
tb ■ world heeds it. The moral force
'iiating from such a:i enormous ag-
: -ate of physical energy is un
measurable. There is not a move-
meat for jiolitical enfranchisement
oil the^face of tho globe that
does not feel itself strengthened by tho
influence of the United States. It is
glorious to lie a citizen of such a coun
try. infinitely more glorious than to have
lieen a Roman citizen at tho height of
the Roman renown!
Well, all this splendor of national de
velopment, which tho British men of
science have just had displayed for their
admiration and wonder, tho people of
the United States Iiavo created for them
selves, and they have created it by ex
tending the same lines of progress which
their forefathers struck out a century
ago.—Now York Sun.

... Old ns tho Exodus.
A most interesting experiment culmi
nate;! t!u.> other day In tho raising of some
wheat grown from seeds as old ns the
Exodus. Tho experimenter is David
Drew, who last year received from a
friend in Alexandria, Egypt, some grains
of wheat taken from a mummy exhumed
near the ruins of Memphis, uiul belong
ing, it is believed, to the period of the
Ninth Dynasty, which would make it
grown about 3,090 B. C., or bo nearly
0.years old. lie planted the seed
early in the spring, and carefully nursed
it. It grew rapidly, and at tho time of
out ting measured from six and a half to
seven feet high. Tho leaves alternate on
the stalk liko common wheat, but the
product of tho plant is tho most singular
part of it, for, instead of growing in tho
ear liko modern corn, thero is a heavy
clu.-t._r of small twigs In placo of tho
spindle which hangs downward from its
weight, and each twig is thickly studded
with kernels, each of which is in a sepa
rate husk. From what is threshed a
larger crop will bo grown next year, as
the result proves this ground to exceed
in quality anything that tho modem
grain can grow.—Plymouth (Mass.) Cor.

Tho Croaker and tho Klckcr.

nothing. Tho kicker is a lively, jovial, j
progressive fellow; the croaker is a dis-1
inai nuisance, who lags superfluous on
tht stage.—Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle. j
