The line He*" I.i Art. The photo-litln-'rapheranro looking toward rincogra pi ly as' a refugo ana substitute for the Bavarian lithographic stone and tho wood cut, and experi ments aro being mndo in America, Germany and England, where picto rial periodicals and uewspapers aro published to get tho ctfcula of the lithographic pen. Tho difference be tween tho processes of lithography and zincography, however, is so great that judgment cannot bo passed as yet Tho great jiondcrous soapstone reproduces colors drawn on it with a greasy pencil. The zinc can ho etched-with nitric or muriatic acid, and, with tho aid of a fioiverful lens, photography called into aid with marvelous effect. The advantages of such a process nmy bo summarized under two heads— economy and convenience—and for daily newspaper pictorial work, where rapidity must he combined with a cer tain amount of artistic excellence, there can he no doubt of tlio zinc plate superseding all other methods of re producing pictures, and tho wood cut is gradually fading away. In tho weeklies and monthlies, where tho mezzo tint can bo success fully printed, tho wood cut may en dured for some time, hut even now somo of tho photographic pen and ink lino drawing is immeasurably better than the black and white brush work on wood. Tho process of biting a plato with acid is, of course, older than Rembrandt, but it has until tho last few years been an expensive and la borious art. Tho hurry of the ago de manded its improvement, and soon it will lie possible to reproduce great pictures in a few hop re, and transfers may ho made with great facility and piw.i'ved for future use at tho norm-' nal expenso of the east, of tho zine plates and tho necessary storage room. —Baltimore American. There aro tiny lambs roosted whole, salmon which has been brought packed in ico upon the heads of runners from a distance of a hundred miles, appetiz ing knbabs of lambs and venison, fowls and partridges (in silver howls), stewed to rags and served with strange colored sauces of tho richest kind; great heaps of boiled rice, in steaming pyramids, white rice, green rice, col ored by an artful admixture of herbs, rice boiled with saffron of a ruddy gold color; omelets and sweet 'dishes, innumerable little china cutis < r tooth some pickles, small china Iw-iwls con taining various thick soups, but not a single joint to he seen. Everybody eats away as if ho lind never tasted food before. There aro no forks, no spoons, no plates; hut every man's hand appears to bo dipping at once into tho innumerable dishes. Occasionally our host, with his mouth half full, grunts out an en treaty that wo should-tasto somo par ticular delicacy, and in twenty min utes all is over. Iced rosewater is poured upon tho lingers of each guest from u silver ower, and ho wipes them upon a delicately embroidered napkin. About a tenth of what has been pro vided luia been 1‘.la-p.u-ly ; tho rest is reuiovid and gobbled up with surprising celerity by the grout, tribe of hungry servants, l ilies m-o brought onco more, but (hero is little or no conversation; the Persians say that “to talk after a good meal is the act of uii ill bred man or a fool." And then wo get up and bid our hospitable friend good night. And as wo leave, wo see that tl:o mysterious covered tray is being taken to the banqueting room, and wo know that our follow guests and our host will drink, smoko end gamble until an unholy hour in tho morning.—Good Words. stkAmkrs SAN ANTONIO, WILDER, STATE OF TEXAS, WILLIAMS, O N' and after” Sept. 28th, 1888, one of the above steamers will leave New York every Friday at 3 p. in., arriving in Brunswick follow ing Monday.
