For somo timf : TUo Chicago Journal and Th ■ i'.rcning News havo been wagingrvijjoi'ous warfare against cigarettes., Tho Journal has printed a series of articles showing tlio largo number of cigarettes that were sold by small shopkeepers to tho public school pupils, and has had interviews with the principals of tho various schools and with physicians, showing tho ex tent and injury of tho cigaretto prac tice among young boys. Tho Nows has been investigating tho composi tion and cfTect of cigarettes generally. With this cud in view a number of packages of each brand commonly used wero purchased and stripped of tho boxes, cards and every distinguish ing mark. Each kind was put into a pasteboard box, tlio lid of which was inscribed with a letter. Tlicso wero taken for analysis to Professor Dela- fontaine, a well known chamisf. Ho ‘found tliat tlio cigarettes ho tested wero generally made of to bacco “imperfectly fcimcnlcd." which means that an unusually largo amount of nicotino was present in them. Iio found that nearly all had an unnatural proportion of insolublo ash, that sev eral kinds wero steeped in an injurious substance, and wero impregnated with dirt in varying proportions.—New York Tribune. Thought It a Dlsgresalon. The Rev. Leonard Gactz, of Alberta, . who had a fine exhibit at tlio industrial fair, was oaco pastor of the Queen’s Avenue Methodist church at London. At an evening servicoono of the choir soloists sang a selection that bordered very closely on the operatic, and it was noticed that Mr. Goetz grow very grave during tho ringing, and when it was finished ho rose and marked with great deliberation: “Wo wi!t now resumo tho worship of God.”—Toronto Globe. The blood orange is a mere vnripty of tho sweet orango obtained by culti vation. ami appears first to havo been raised by tbo Spanish gardeners in tho Philippmo Islands, from the capital of which (Jlaital it, together with tho well known cigars, formed at ono time one of the chief articles of export. Oil its first appearance in Europe it excited a considerable sensation, and, in tho last century, very high prices wero de manded for tho trees which ho;o tho wonderful fruit. None, however, now como to us from Manila, our supply being derived almost entirclv from Malta, where great pains and attention are bestowed upon their cultivation.
