“Soma time before tho death of Seth
Green, the celebrated fish cultured
and naturalist." said a I’hihulelidiittn
who takes great interest in |>iscicullu
ral matters, T paid a visit with him
to tho fish hatchery of that state at
Caledonia. Ill ono of the ponds thcro
nt that time were 6.000 largo brook
trout, every one of which had been,
captured with the'fly-lied on barbless
hooks’ in unfrequented brooks in the
Adirondack regions. Thcso trout, Mr.
Green said, had convinced him that
fish have reasoning power and mein
ory. When they were hooked, and
reeled in slowly by tho careful fisher
men who wero capturing them for the
state pond, they had time and oppor
tunity to note the form and character
of tho tacklo that made them prison
ers. According to Mr. Green they
.never forgot that experience.
- “The trout had been in the pond a
' 'long time, tho females nover being al
lowed to ispawn there, and would fol
low Mr. Green os ho walked along tho
edge of the water tossing hits of Tivor
into it To show that his theory about
their memory was correct, ho would
carry a cano and fish rod concealed
behind his back. If he took the cano
from its concealment and held it out
over the water, tho fish paid no atten
tion to it, but'the moment he produced
tho rod with its reel and lino attached,
away tho trout scanmcrod likon flash
to distant parts of the pond. Mr.
Green told mo that ho would permit
any ono to cast a fly in that pond to
their heart’s content, as ho was satis-
fled that not one of tho trout would
como near it, so vividly did they ro-
member their enemy of Qve years
ago.”—Philadelphia Press.
/ ^ . Tlu> Toll Tower Idea.
It has been remarked of tho Eiffel
tower as a specimen of engineering it
is simply a variation from the ordi
nary method of iron bridge building.
Tho American engineers who visited
Franco, England and Scotland a few
wooks ago, greatly admired tho Eiffel,
but regarded tho bridgo in course of
construction across tho Frith of Forth
as far more remarkable. They do not
consider it a remurkablo tiling to erect
an iron tower 600 meters in height. It
reposes perpendicularly u|ion Arm
foundations, and tin- weight of tho
material is easily sustained.
It is a far more pheuomcnul per
formance to build out on the canti
lever plan a structure oxtendiug, un
supported by falso work, for a thou
sand feet over an arm of tho sea. That
was the wouderour engineers witness
ed in Scotland, and it was immensely
.moro impressive than tho simple iron
edifleo, notable chiefly for its perfec
tion of details and colossal propor
tions, that is tho leading attraction of
tho French exposition.
Wo havo mentioned that thcro was
S iition before tho committee of
rs of tho Philadelphia ceuton-
tho erection of an iron tower
1,000 feet high, and that it was reject
ed bccauso tho estimated cost, 11.000,•
000, was held to ho extravagant. It
would bo worth whilo to look through
tho old papers of tho Fourth of July
centcumal, aud see how closely tho
work proposed and rejected for tho
banks of tho Schuylkill has been fol
lowed in that which has been erected
on tho Seine.—Cincinnati Commercial
Gazette.

A State street business man sent a
boy on on errand not long ago, and
tlio licet footed youth took a remark
ably long time about coming and go
ing. When ho finally returned, how
ever. bo walked auito jauntily over
to wnero tho merchant sat and laid a
note on tho desk. Tho latter merely
looked blankly at tho youth and in
auired what ho wanted. “I’m tho boy.
*lr. w “What boy?’.’ iuquired tho mer
chant “Why, £no otfico bov. Tho
boy you sent un to tho bank.” His
tormentor looked at him steadily over
his glasses, and then, with a bland
sinilo.of recognition, said: “Why, so
it is. But how you have changed
sinco I saw you last l” The office boy
evidently appreciated the sarcasm, lie
has been a model of dispatch ever
since.—Boston Advertiser.
