GENERAL VACCINATION
There are several cases of typhoid
te\ei now iu Cartersville, some of
them have terminated fatally, and all
ot them are now or have been very
S!c ’k- "e are at the present moment
facing an epidemic—a serious epi
demic, if there is not a city board of
health created, with full powers to en-
I’ct such sanitary rules and regula
tions and with full |>ower to enforce
sumo, and the citizens wake up to the
fact—-that they should be inoculated
right away to protect themselves and
families as well as the community at
Urge.
Typhoid fever is an acute infectious
disease, mostly prevalent during the
months of August, September and Oc
tober. it is a germ or seed disease.
The disease always comes from a per
son sick with it. These germs are very
small and develop in the bowels and
kidneys. Therefore the only way to
gel typhoid fever is to get some of the
discharge from a person sick with it
into the mouth and the bowels of an
other person who has not had it.
It has been known for many years
as "the scourge of the armies.” In
our Civil war the Union army had
over 80,000 cases.
In the war of 1870, the Germans had
o\ er 73,000 cases and over 7,000
deaths in less than four months.
The • British army in South Africa
had over 57,000 cases and over 8.000
deaths in six months.
In our war with Spain we had over
20,738 cases, with over 1,580 deaths,
among 108,000 men all occuring in less
Ilian three months.
Typhoid fever caused nine-tenths of
ad deaths occuring among troops en
camped in the United States in 1898.
It is estimated that in the United
Slates we have annually over 400,000
cases of typhoid fever with over
40,000 deaths; this means a death rate
for every 10 persons attacked, and
thousands who do not die become
chronic invalids or are crippled in
various ways.
Young men are peculiarly liable to
this disease between the ages of 15
and 40..
The average incubation period is
fioni 8 to 12 days. One may carry the
germ under his nails, in his hair, or
his clothing for some days before they
find their way into the alimentary
canal.
In civil life the great epidemics of
typhoid fever are generally caused by
the contamination of drfnking water.
Milk is a common vehicle of bac
teria and is responsible for a consid
erable proportion of typhoid fever
cases—it is infected invariably
through the water used to dilute it —
or in washing the dairy utensils, or
through the unclean hands of the
milkers. Ice cream is the most dan
gerous.
Of other food vehicles of typhoid
bacillus I would mention oysters,
fruits and uncooked vegetables, es
pecially when exposed to fly polution.
Whenever 1 the soil is fertilized with
sewage, there is danger of the grow
ing plants becoming infected. Bathing
ir infected water should be avoided.
Flies are known to be the chief fac
to i in the spread of typhoid fever.
Fecal matter adheres to the feet of
flies and may he carried by them
from the sick patient, and from soiled
clothing, bedding, or bed pans, to the
kitchen or dining room, when it is
deposited on food or drink, or it may
be carried to the bed room, and de
posited on the person or clothing.
Grave is the danger of the fly.
Typhoid fever has steadily declined
since the Spanish-American war in
the United States army.
During the four years 1909-1912 no
death occurred among the vaccinated
soldiers in the IT. S. army. This re
markable decline is due to our better
knowledge of sanitation and the won
derful effects of the process ot im
munization by vaccination.
Every case of typhoid fever must be
regarded as highly contagious and
treated accordingly.
it should he known that a large vol
ume of water may be infected by the
discharge from one case, and if pol
luted with organic matter, becomes a
rc-ady culture fluid for a multiplica
t:on of -germs and infect whole towns
or cities.
When it is known or suspected that
a person has typhoid fever he or she
sKbuld be placed in the largest and
best ventilated room in the house, as
far away from noise and visitors as
possible, with the windows and doors
so screened as to actually keep out
flies, and prepare from the first day
for a systematic care of all discharges
o f the bowels and kidneys, as will pro
tect the other members of the family,
the nurse and the community.
Prevention. "An ounce of preven
tion is worth a pound of cure " It con
sists in a perfect sanitary system, in
the city, or around your country home.
Pe vaccinated at once. In anti-typhoid
injections of vaccine we have a meth
od oT protection against this disease
THE BARTOW TRIBUNE-THE CARTERSVILLE NEWS, AUGUST 2, 1917
which is quite as efficacious as is vac
cination against small pox.
It is well known that an attack of
typhoid usually protects a man against
another attack, only I case in 150 have
it the second time.
It is well known that over seven
times of those not vaccinated contract
typhoid fever, and that eleven times
as many die of it. It will uot hurt any
one to be vaccinated, usually within
three or four hours from the time of
the injection the vaccinated i>erson
notices certain symptoms, there may
lx some redness, swelling and sore
ness for an inch or two about the site
of the injection, |>erhaps some head
ache. or backache, and a slight sick
feeling—these symptoms vary hi se '
verity with different individuals, less
than one per cent complain of any ill
feeling at all, the reaction lasts from
four to fourty-eight hours.
It takes three doses or inocculation,
7 days aj>art to be vaccinated or in
oculated.
In conclusion, I urge upon every
man, woman and. child in Uartersville
end Bartow county to dread this aw
ful disease, and remember how easy !
it can be prevented.
Ist. Perfect a sanitary system.
2d. Vaccinate with typhoid bacteria.
No harmful results will follow.
It is especially decreed and should
be enforced at once in Cartersville,
that we have a well organized board
of health consisting of not more than
| three persons, all of them to be phy-
I sieians, appointed by the mayor and
I ocimnissioners, with full power to
j adopt such rules and laws and regula
j tints as they may desire. The same
j to he as effective and of force, as any
law, or ordinance adopted by the city
council. They should be furnished (by
taxation) a sufficient amount of money
to conduct their office in a perfect
way. In fact they should he given the
power and the means to regulate and
enforce a perfect health department
in our city.
In conclusion I advise you to be
vaccinated by your physician. It costs
yon nothing for the medicine and your
physician will only charge you for his
time, if he charges anything at all for
this work.
Remember that the average cost of
every case of typhoid fever in the
United States averages over $175 for
each case.
Statistics prove the value of typhoid
vaccination. All should be immunized
who come in contact with typhoid pa
tients, and all who live or travel in
this country or unsewered towns or
cities (like Cartersville is today) or
eat food prepared in unscreened
kitchens or served in unscreened din
ing rooms, or drink unboiled water
from creeks or rivers or open springs
or unclean wells.
For further information concerning
immunization against typhoid fever
see your family physician or cali up
on your county or city health officer.

FROM CONSTIPATION
If Tongue is Coated, Breath Bad, Stom

Give "California Syrup of Figs' at
ouce —a teaspoonful today often saves
a sick child tomorrow.
If your little one is out-of-sorts, half
sick, isn’t resting, eating and acting
naturally—look. Mother! see if tongue
is coated. This is a sure sign that its
little stomach, liver and bowels are
clogged with waste. When cross, irri
table, feverish, stomach sour, breath
bad or has stomach-ache, diarrhoea,
sore throat, full of cold, give a tea
spoonful of "California Syrup of Figs.’’
and in a few hours all the constipated
poison, undigested food and sour bile
gently moves out of its little bowels
without griping, and you have a well,
playful child again.
Mothers can rest easy after giving
this harmless "fruit laxative," because
ii never fails to cleanse the little one s
liver and bowels and sweeten the
stomach and they dearly love its plea>
ant taste. Full directions for babies,
children of all ages and for grown-ups
