A Fine Example.
A fine example of loyally and will
ingness to serve was presented Wed
nesday morning by the first ten of
Bartow county's soldiers who went to
the front on that day. When the roll
was called every man was in his place,
equipped and ready to go and possess*
t ; with a willingness and determina
tion to give a good account of himself
during his service in the army.
Whatever lack of sympathy in the
present war aims of the government
may have heretofore existed ought to
be now dispelled. Whatever criticism
may have heretofore beta urged ought
now to bes. lenced forever. In the per
sonnel of the first ten who left here
Wednesday was to be counted repre
sentatives of the best families of Rar
tow county and front every section.
One of the young men included in the
list makes a personal sacrifice of five
thousand dollars a year and has an
earning capacity of at least that
an tint, who, in order to render ser
vice to his go T . eminent, lays aside to
accent thirty dollars a month and to
furnish wholehearted patriotic devo
tion to his country’s welfare. Surel\
this ought to silenee that criticism
which is untruthfully urged that this
is a rich man’s war And a poor man’s
fight. There is no truth in any such
statements and a man discredits hiu>
self to make any such charge. The
rich man and the paor man are today
joined in a common cause, fighting for
a comrqon country and for the best
interests of the human race.
Those who have been backward,
v\ho have assorted their own loyalty
hut changed the object Immediately
afterward; who have been free to say
that this is Wall street’s war without
explaining when, how or where; who
have been sneering at the motives
which have prompted the government
to engage in this war; who have been
questioning the good mentions of our
alHe- toward us; who have been ex
pre si'.-g great concern lest sending
food t • I'uiype will result in starving
our e!v< ; who have been raving
about the dictatorship of the president
and the overthrowing of the liberties
secured by our fathers; who have
been asserting the impregnable char
acter of Germany’s war machine and
insisting {hat. it is unconquerable and
that our -vict ;ry is hopeless, should
cease all such muttering® and at least
hold up the hands of our government,
give cheer to those who are to go to
the front and make out of themselves
ireful citizens in this time of need.
Each and every citizen in America
h-;s been receiving the benefits of gov
ernment. For those benefits he is due
a corresponding duty and responsibil
ity. He should not shirk the perform
ance of that duty. He should not be a
slacker. He should meet his obliga
tion like a man and acquit himself as
a man.
It is highly pleasing to those who
ft;.ve an interest in America to witness
ft e wholehearted response made l>y I
the five per cent of the national army
who entered upon the performance of
tlie'r duties on last Wednesday ami of
this number we are especially proud
<u the ten men who went from Bar
tow county, feeling sure that we will
ft made happy again as soon as the
renaming contingents are called out
and enter upon the performance of
their obligation. There Is much for the
test of us to do, and we believe that
within a short length of time this na
tion will present a s did front to the
enemy, both with reference to the
share of men who will be sent to the
front, as well as the great body of
men and women who will be left to
do the w rk at home in the various
avocations• and spheres of usefulness.
