A CAUSE CELEBRE
FINALLY ADJUDICATED
One of the unique cases which has
been litigated backwards and for
wards, up and’ down, through the
courts of this county and through the
appellate courts of the state, is that
of J. M. (Roe) Knight against Joe
Northey, and the subject matter was
a bit of machinery connected with a
one-log washer for mining purposes.
The trouble arose over the claims of
each of these* gentlemen that each was
, the absolute owner and each possessed
one and the same machinery at the
same time, worth in good money about
twelve dollars.
Some time in May, 1916, Mr, Nor
they j'aid his hands upon and asserted
possession of the machinery in ques
tion. and proceeded to erect a washer
for mining ore. Mr. Knight learning of
this, advised Mr. Northey that the ma
chinery belonged to him and not to
Northey; whereupon, Mr. Northey
claimed that he had owned it for thir
ty years, or other long length of time,
and thus the difference was wide aprirt
to begin with.
Mr. Knight employed J, R. Whitaker
to assert his rights as claimed by him,
and thereupon Mr. Whitaker sued out
a possessory warrant proceeding in
the justice court, presided over by the
late A. M. Puckett, who, upon hearing
the case, decided that “this machinery
belongs to Knight."
Attorney C. C. Pittman, who had
been employed by Air. Northey to rej>-
resent him. carried the claim by bail
trover proceedings to the city court of
Cartersville. The case then landing in
the city court, Judge A. W. Fite ap
peared as representing Mr. Knight,
and upon trial before a jury during
the late Judge Aloon’s administration
reached a verdict that “this machinery
belongs to Northey."’
Thereupon, Mr. Knight, through his
attorneys, moved for anew trial, but
this being denied, he paid forty dollars
to take care of the cost of the case up
“to this time and furthermore engaged
Reuben Arnold, of Atlanta, a celebrat
ed lawyer, to assist Attorneys Whitak
er and Fite in presenting the case to
the court of appeals of Georgia.
The court of api>eals has ju
affirmed the verdict of the .jury and
judgment of the city court of Carters
ville which in effect definitely decides
that “this machinery belongs t to
Northey.”
So ends a case which has engaged
the thought and attention and exacted
worry and time of litigants and law
yer’s through several months and
years, the subject matter of which is
believed to be worth as much as
twelve dollars and the accrued costs,
attorneys’ fees and the et cetera ac
cumulating to an amount many times
the value of the subject of the con
troversy. The main b nefleiary is Cos).
C. C. Pittman, who successfully fought
cut the interest of Iris client and who,
of course, exults in his victory and
takes laulable pride in overcoming
formidable'counsel for the other side.
FOLLOWING GOVERNMENT
SUGGESTIONS.
The U. S. Government has made
many suggestions to the people all
over the country urging them to do
many things mr their betterment, and
improvement. Among many other
things advised, is the elimination of
so many expensive methods and sys
tems used of late years by most mer
chants, the object df which has been
to draw and increase their trade
among the people. It seems suddenly
t.. have been discovered by many peo
ple that these expensive methods and
! systems which have cost the people so
i much and been such a factor in the
j high cost of living by forcing the m< r
j chants to keep up his prices in order
to pay expenses, are all wrong and
| should be stopped in order to reduce
. and lower the high cost of livinar.
Aianv merchants are trying to follow
these suggestions but they, by long [
practice, have become so wedded to |
these ex>,>ensive methods, and the hab
it has become so strong, they find it al
most impossible to make the change.
Not so though with one old fashion
end old foggie merchant in Carters
rHle who has always kept his expen
ses down to the lowest notch, by elim
inating all unnecessary expenses that
ether merchants are urged to elimin
ate now and for ten years past has
annually saved his customers the nice
sum of about $2,000.00 that each of
the other merchants doing a similar
business has been forced to extract
from their customers in order to meet
these evj>enses. The one that has been
doing these economical stunts so loug
and saved his customers so much
money i3 Hardaway Cash Cos., who
continues to save each one who trashes
there about an average of 20 per cent
on all goods bought there, and will be
la a position this season to even do
letter than ever. And now in a few
days you will hear of some of the de
tails and special prices that the otle
rrs don't ever meet. Get his prices be

Total increase, ten years $6,267.60 23 $118.84
In the record of the dairy herd of the State College of Agriculture
given above, specific attention is called to the annual returns per cow for
the ten-year period. For the first year the total amounted to $86.49 per
cow. This has gradually increased until during the past year the sales per
cow amounted to $205.33. The herd was established with native cows
that cost an average of $34.50 per Head. In 1908 a few registered Jersey and
Holstein females were purchased. High-class bulls of the two breeds have
been in constant use in the herd. By the application of the funda
mental principals of breeding and feeding, ihe average earning capacity
per cow has been increased almost, two and one-half times in a period of
ten years.
There are some cows in every herd that may be called boarders be
cause they do not furnish enough milk to pay for their keep. These may
be weeded out by keeping individual records of each cow and the figures
given above show that it pays. Too much emphasis cannot bfi placed upon
the point that the best way to start a herd paying dividends is to sell off the
hoarders and put at the head of the herd a good pure bred bull that has a
line of high producing ancestry. ,
Proper feeding goes a long ways towards making a paying herd, for
the feeding of dairy cows is an art. Write the State College of Agriculture
for methods of feeding based on several years’ experience under Georgia
conditions. An Interesting and instructive bulletin entitled. “How to
Make Good Butter,” has just been issued by the College.
The present crisis finds not enough dairy cows in the country to
furm h all the demands made on the mijk supply. Some good dairy ani
mak are being butchered at an early age and farmers are urged to save
these for breeding stock and to furnish a supply of one of the cheapest and
most desirable of all human foods. Her product should be used more
widely as a substitute for meal* fish, canned vegetables and other products
which cost infinitely more in proportion to their nutritive value.

An Eight Year Paint Test
Mastic Paint Won Out Over All Other Paint in
Longest Endurance.
In order to determine which paint
would stand best the test of time, the
Facolet Mfg. Cos., of Spartanburg, S.
C., painted some sixty houses for an
eight-year endurance tost, using the
leading brands.
Here is their opinion of Mastic
Paint:
1 “After eight years we find that the
ten cottages covered with ‘MASTIC
PAINT’ are in better condition and
stood the test better than any of the
other paints we used. Will say further
that the houses were all of the same
architecture, weather-boarded with
