SHE M HOGS
SAYS BEPARTHENT
It is recognized that there is at the
present time a shortage of meat pro
ducing animals, and it would seem
that this shortage will increase, as far
as hogs are concerned, as recent sta
tistics show 7 that there are now nearly
5,000,000 less hogs in the United
States than a year ago.
In view of the above mentioned
shortage of meat producing animals
the state and federal departments of
agriculture propose to extend greater
efforts of assistance In the suppres
sion of hog cholera by covering a
greater amount of territory, making
the campaign which has been and is
row conducted co-operatively by the
State Department of Agriculture,
through the office of the state veterin
arian, and the U. S. Bureau of Ani
mal Industry as nearly statewide as
possible.
Experience in the past, based on ac
tual field observations, has proven the
value of the serum simultaneous or
double treatment, when administered
by fexperts. All men employed by eith
er the state or federal governments
are trained veterinarians and have
had wide experience in the control of
hog cholera and other diseases of
hogs. There will be no charges for the
services of these experts. The depart
ments mentioned earnestly solicit the
co-operation of all farmers to increase
pork production in Georgia.
The State Commissioner of Agricul
ture in his yearly report for 1916 em
phasizes the fact that Georgia paid,
to people outside the state, $5,251,920
for side meat. These figures were ob
tained by the number of pounds of
this meat shipped into the state figur
ing 15 cents per pound. During almost
the entire year of 1916 hog prices were
about one-half of what they are today.
If Georgia buys the same number of
pounds this year, under existing pric
es, it is not placing the figures too
high to say she will send to the hog
raising states $10,000,000 for this class
of meat, provided, of course, she is
able to get meat shipped in at all.
Much of the meat formerly shipped to
the south from the central states must
now go to feed our allies in the pres
ent war. It would seem, therefore,
that it is up to us to raise our own
pork and keep this money at home.
Although there lias,been a decrease
of 10 per cent in the last year in the
r umber of breeding stock in some of
the leading hog raising states, Geor
gia has increased her production in
this line in the last three years some
thing like a Ealf million hogs, her in
crease in the last year being about 3
per cent, or 73,000; notwithstanding
this, if Georgia is to feed herself,"if
slie is to feed the people within her
boundaries, she must still increase
her pork production about 700,000
bogs. These figures are important, it
is vitally important a,t the present
time that every state that has nol
heretofore done so produce enough
food for home consumption, and Geor
gia. needs to raise uearly 100,000 more
bogs to do this. We will not have to
look elsewhere |or a market. We need
ar least 1,000,000 more meat hogs an
nually to supply’ home demands. How
ever, it will not add much to the meat
supply nor to the hogs raiser’s purse
if he grows many hogs and then al
lows them to die of cholera or some
ether disease, that is preventable, be
fore killing or selling time. Conserva
tion is as important as production.
The days of experimenting with the
anti hog cholera serum have passed.
No well informed hog raiser today
doubts the value of serum. Do not wait
until the disease makes its appearance
in your herd. Apply the motto “Safety
First” in your hog raising. Have your
hogs immunized before cholera gets
to your herd.

SURVIVOR OF SUBMARINE
ATTACK ENLISTS IN NAVY.
Herman L. Dupree, twenty years of
ffge, from Birmingham, Ala., walked
aboard the U. S. S. Recruit In Union
Square at five o’clock Tuesday after
ioon and said he wanted to enlist in
the United States Navy. While he was
being examined by Surgeon J. J
Kaveney he casually remarked that he
had the experience of submarine gun
fire during the past summer. Dupree
had shipped from Portland, Maine, last
J une on the Norwegian tanker,
“Kongsli’ bound for Rotterdam. On
the return trip in the third week of
August, out four days, from the coast
of Rotterdam at five-thirty in the
morning three shots were sent across
the bow of the tanker. Dupree said:
“I was on watch on the hurricane
deck. The weather was clear and
calm. No warning was given except
the three shots. Twenty more were
fired and in ten minutes we were sunk.
The crew of 28 took to the three boats
and immediately the submarine arose
and came within fifty yards of us.
This was the conversation the captain
of the submarine had with our skipper.
It was all in English with no trace of
German accent.”
“ How long have you bad this ship?’
said the submarine captain.”
“ ‘A year and a half,’ answered our
skipper."
" ‘Where was she built?’ he asked.”
“ ‘Baltimore,’ was the reply.” ,
“ ‘What kind of a crew have you?’ ”
“‘Mixed: Danish, Swedes and Nor
wegians.’ ’’
“ ‘Any Americans?’ ”
“ ‘None.’ ”
According to Dupree the captain of
the tanker asked for a tow and he was
told that an English cruiser would be
a’eng in the morning. The next day
the cruiser came along but paid no
attention to the men, it being a rule
of the British Admiralty not to pick
up life boats. A'ft.er floundering in the
rough sea with no rations but a few
biscuits and very little water the men
finally landed at St. Nazares, France.
Dupree has been three years at sea
having shipped from Norfolk, Va. He
was educated in the public schools at
Birmingham. He vvas sent to ie
Training Station at Newport.
