A STIRRING ADDRESS
BT OR. J. P. BOIDIN
At the recent meeting of the Bartow
County Masonic Convention which
was largely attended by Masons from
all sections of the county and who
were royally enti laitted with a
-by the people of Cassville, a
(.timber of short speeches were made,
i.n! one particularly brilliant one by
Dr. Joe P. Bowdoin, of AdairsviUe. Lb.
Bowdoin, who for several years was
the roaster of the Bartow County Ma
sonic Convention, and, in fact, irs or
ganizer in this county, was called ui>ois
for a speech during the afternoon The
eudress has been so favorably corn
rented on that we here produce it In
part. After a few remarks complimen
tary of Cassville, Its past and its pres
ent and its sterling citizenship. Dr.
Bowdoin said:
Never in the history of the world
have men lived In conditions under
which we are living today. With the
world ]>owers involved in the most ap-
Itailing of wars. Thousands of our
brethren are up in arms and are fight
ing for that which they deem right.
Onr own country has gonp to war.
With great reluctance and only the
good of future mankind would have
ever induced our president to have
given our aid. The freedom of all man
kind depends on America, on our sol
diers at the front and our loyalty and
sacrifice at home.
As Entered Apprentice Masons we
are taught: “In the state you are to
be a quiet and peaceful subject, true
to your government and just to yout
country; you are not to countenance
disloyalty or reliellion but patiently
submit to legal authority and conform
v t'i cheerfulness to the government
cl the country in which you live”
To this doctrine all .Masons have
subscribed. All .Masons are loyal.

Give Us Men.
Brethiea. th< crying need ot this
age - rue men >t thought, men of
deed, men of conviction, aggressive,
stalwart men.
in this day we do net want weak
ling. moral coward?, slackers with
out baokbon , without stamina, ready
to bend to every breeze, willing to
swim with the popular current, no
> atte - wheie that current may lead.
In church an state in jx liiics an i
society, and, abov all, in Masonry
we nc and earne-t, upright, Hod-fearing
men. We have no room for him who
places money above honor, selfishness
above righteousness, passion above
virtue power and place above man
hood and integrity, mammon above
God. We have no ro m for those who
worship tiie golden calf, who bow
down before the idols of pleasure and
flivolity, who waste their God-given
•tilents in idleness and dissiimtion We
need today men of pure hearts, men
oi clean lives, men who are willing
to sacrifice all upon the altar of truth,
who are willing to live for it, and, if
need be. to die for it.
We need men lik<- Abraham, wiio
shattered bis father's idols and who,
when God called him, exclaimed:
“Here am 1!" We ne<d men like
.Moses, who dated to say to the mighty
Pharaoh, “Let my people go free!"
We need men like Isaiah, who, with
burning zeal and flrey eloquence, de
nounced the sins of his people. We
need men like John the Baptist, who
passed like a flaming meteor through
the land, proclaiming to a sin steeped
world, “Repent! for the Kingdom of
God is at hand!” We need men like
Judas Maccabeus, that great hfero who
fought with his hands while he prayed
unto God with his heart. We need men
like Mordecai, who prostrated not
himself before Hainan, and who would
not bend the knee to unrighteous
]ower We need men who dare to re
-1 like iniquity in high places as well
as In’ low, who dare to cry aloud
against the sins of the world and
spare not.
Brethren, vou of (he Royal Craft,
you who are among the leaders and
teachers of your communities, to
whom they look for light .and guidance
upon you devolve great duties and
serious responsibilities. Purge your
lodges. Purify your membership. Raise
high the standard of Masonry in your
communities. Do your ditty manfully
and bravely, without fear and without
favor. Scrutinize closely the character
of those who seek to enter your inner
door. Let no one, however great or
wealthy, be admitted, whose character
does net. measure up to the full stand
ard of a man. K< ep out no one, how
ever hunfble and lowly, whose life is
clean, whose acts are pure. Show to
the world that to be a Mason is to be
a m n of upright life and noble aspira
tions. Keep f!:e fires of. Masonry burn
ing bright!) upon your altars and in
your hearts.
Would that today i could stand be
fore you with lips of flame, with heart
of fire, and aptteal to you, trumpet*
tengued. to give us men, grand, loyal
heroic men, sun-crowned, who stand
in on the heights, whose . lives shine
with the beauty of holiness and the
glork of divinity.
Yes. give us men!
Strong and stalwart ones;
Men whom highest hope inspires.
Men whom purest honor fires, f
Men who tramples self beneath them,
Ven who make their country w reathe
them
As her noble sons,
Worthy of her sires!
Men who never shame their mothers,
Men who never fail their brothers,
True, however false are others;
Give ns men—l say again,
Give us men!
Give 11s men!
Men who, when the tempest gathers.
Grasp the standard of their fathers
In the thickest fiaht;
Men who strike for home and altar
(Let the coward cringe and falter,)
God defend/the right!
True as truth, though lorn and lonely,
Tender, as the brave are only;
Men who tread where saints have trod.
Men for country, home and God;
Give us men! I say again—
Give us men!
