CROSSTIES ARE BEING
SAVED FOR FUEL.
N. C. &. St. L. Discontinues Burning
Them Along Right-of-way.
Nashville, Tenn.. Nov. 21.—1n line
with the recommendations cf the Rail
roads’ War Board, orders have been is
sued by the Nashville, Chattanooga &
Sr. Louis Railway that hereafter no
crossties are to be burned along the
right of way, at least until all danger
of a fuel shortage is past. '
All ties take n from the tracks in
making renewals are being stacked
and these will be available for fuel by
citizens in the various communities
ce;ved by the system after the track
forces and section men have been sup
plied. “it has been the custom of the
road for years to permit its section
forces to use damaged crossties for
fuel, but this year all ties that can be
used for this purpose are being saved.
Chief Engineer Hunter McDonald says
that no tics will be burned until all
danger of a fuel famine has passed.
Already thousands of ties have been
stacked at points along the system
where renewals have been made and
in this way the road hopes to do its
bit towards promoting fuel conserva
tion.

thanksgiving.
President Wilson in his Thanksgiv
ing Proclamation makes uo attempt to
recount the si>ccific things for which
the Nation at this time lias cause to ■
be grateful. Had he particularized |
doubtless be would have given ihe it ;
suit of the Second Liberty Loan a j
prominent place among those things
for which the Nation should be thank
ful.
For the great result of the Second
Liberty Loan with nearly
10,000,000 Americans rallying to the
financial suppoit of the Nation and
subscribing over four and a half bil
lion dollars for the purchase of Liberty
Loan Bonds, is a cause for deep
thanksgiving in the heart of every
loyal American.
President Wilson says the Nation
should be thankful that we have been
given the opportunity to serve man
kind as we once served ourselves in
the great day of our Declaration of In
dependence by taking up arms against
the tyranny that threatened to master
and debase men everywhere.
So, too, can all subscribers to the
Liberty Ix>an be thankful that they
have been given an opportunity to aid
iu this great mission of America and
have done their part toward giving to
the world liberty and justice and se
curity from tne tyranny that threatens
to master and debase all nations and
all men.
Every purchaser of a Liberty Loan
Bond has struck a blow for human lib
erty and for civilization and humanity.
Let them remember this on Thursday,
the 29th day of November, and be
thankful.
