Hog Cholera is
Greatly Reduced
Remarkable results have been at
tained this year in the suppression of
hog cholera by the State Veterinary
Department, under the direction of Dr.
Peter F. Bahnsen. As & result of the
persistent and thorough field work di
rected toward the suppression of hog
cholera, the losses, for 1917 will not
exceed 8 per cent of the total produc
tion in Georgia. In 1914, these losses
went as high as 30 per cent ;in 1915,
ihey exceeded 25 per cent, while in
1916 they were about 15 per cent.
These figures will indicate the splen
did progress that is being made in the
suppression of this serious disease in
the State.
The unusually high commercial
value of hogs at this time has de
manded a more through and more ac
tive campaign against hog cholera
than has ever before been waged.
The United States Department of Ag
riculture, co-operating with the State
Veterinarian, is now furnishing seven
veterinarians, while the State Depart
ment has four veterinarians in the
field, making a total of eleven, who
are engaged wholly in the work of
hog cholera control. The results have
been extraordinarily gratifying, and
a tremendous saving has been effect
ed to the producers of Georgia this
year.
The Veterinary Department, Dr.
Bannsen states, desires' very earnest
ly to caution -farmers against the
time-honored practice of placing brood*
sows in peanut fields, because the ex
perience of the past has conclusively
shown that brood sows wintered on
peanut fields suffer from a physical
breakdown during the late winter and
early spring. One of the most fre
quent symptoms in this connection is
paralysis of the hind quarters. Farm
ers should keep their brood sows out
of the peanut fields.

Cartersville People Should Not Neg
lect Their Kidneys.
No kidney ailment is unimportant.
Don’t overlook the slightest backache j
or urinary irregularity. Nature may
he warning you of approaching drop-|
sv, gravel or Bright’s disease. Kid- j
ney disease is seldom fatal if treated
in, time, but neglect may pave the
way. Don’t neglect a lame or ach
i g back another day. Don’t ignore
dizzy spells, headaches, weariness or
pression. If you feel you need kii\-
roy help, begin u*ing the reliable,
' ime-tried remedy, Doan’s Kidney
Pills. For 50 years Doan’s have been
found effective. Endorsed by Carters-
\‘lle people.

Wholesale Grocers
Aiding Fodd Administrator
Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 19.—Announce
ment has been made to the office of
j the Federal Food Administrator for
! Georgia that a committee of repre
sentative grocers various sec
| tions of the country has been formed
Ito co-operate with the United States
Food Administration in carrying out
! its program.
Mr. John fI. Shafer, president of
i (he National Retail Grocers' Associ
i ation, has been appointed chairman,
lit is his purpose to visit the retail
I grocers’ associations in all parts of
| the United States during the coming
months. t
The appointment of this committee
joy the Food Administration comes as
! a direct result of the co-operation
which the retail grocery trade has
shown. The spirit of that branch of
business life—and it has been shown
as clearly in this state as in other j
states—is exemplified in a set of reso- j
lutions adopted by national reprgsen-!
tatives of the retail grocery trade at!
a meeting in Washington, in which
they declare:
“We will, whether licensed or not,
co-operate with the U. S. Food Admin
istration in every way possible to in
sure the enforcement of its rules and
regulations and the success of its con
servation plans, and deliver to the con
sumers of the United tSates the ne
cessities of life as cheaply as it lies
within our power to do.”
License Taken Away
From Food Dealers
Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 19.—The United
States Food Administration has
given a definite answer to those
wholesale handlers of foodstuffs who
have been in the habit of unjusti
fiably refusing shipments consigned to
them, thereby being responsible for a
great waste of food. The form of an
swer has been in the revocation of the
lieense of Morris, Singer & Cos., in
Washington, for the reason that they
rejected two car loads of potatoes con
signed to them, and permitted them
to deteriorate. This announcement is
of more than ordinary interest to the
people of Georgia because of the fact
that just at this time the matter of
consignment of potatoes is principally
in mind.
The firm thus penalized by the Ad
ministration will not be permitted to
handle for sale any foodstuffs subject
to license after December Bth, and
they have been put on notice that any
violation of this prohibition will make
them liable to a fine of not exceeding
$5,000 or two years imprisonment or
[both, as provided in the recent license
ruling.
The case of Morris, Singer & Cos.
is the first where the Food Adminis
tration has found it necessary to use
its powers to revoke licenses and the
casern ay be considered as a warning
to any other dealers in any part of
the country not disposed to co-operate
with or abide by the regulations.
Unjustifiable refusal of shipments
on the part of consignees has for
years been one of the detriments to
the production and handling of perish
able food products. It has been a
somewhat common practice for a
dealer to order a shipment from a
farmer and if, when the shipment ar
! rived, the consignee would take ad-
I vantage of a situation and reject it,
j the shipper invariable has been placed
at a great disadvantage. It meant
I for him an almost interminable law
-1 suit or a total oss of his product.
