g>eat things could be accomplished In

®wn country.
The Supreme Need.
The following from Dr. John R. Mott
comes with peculiar significance and
striking force, after his wide and rich
experiences:
“When I made my first journey
round the world I went home and
wrote a book in which I laid great
stress upon the need of an increase in
the number of foreign missionaries.
Then I returned from my second
tour, I laid stress upon the need of a
great army of native workers, sons
atd daughters of the soil. When I
came back from my third extended
journey to the east, I was led to se;
that I had taken a very superficial
view. What we need is not so much
an increase in the number of mission
Aries, not so much a vast army of na
tte workers; what we need is the dis
covery of the hiding of God’s powe>
and the secret of the release of that
yower. We need more workers through
whom God shall have His opportunity,
fere and there He is accomplishin :
through one worker what many work
ers could not accomplish where the !
hiding of His power is not discover
ed.
“Since then I have found the same
thing exemplified all over the honu
f.eld; God has His ways, and they are
*ot always our ways. One of th^most

A Gigantic Task.
“Approximately 80 per cent of the
total population of Japan, or above
forty millions, reside in rural districts,
of which number, so far as our data
indicates, 96 per cent constitute an en
tirely unworked field. Of the remain
ing 20 per cent of the total population
icsiding in cities and towns, about
one-fifth is still unprovided for, thus
giving us the result that above 80 per
c:nt of the population of Japan is no*
being directly reached by the evange
listic forces. Even in the cities and
towns which are unoccupied, a com-
I natively small portion of the people
have been in any real sense. A gigan
lie and yet most inspiring task, there
fore, still lies, before us in the Chris
tianization of Japan, which calls, first
o r all, for renewed humiliation, deeper
consecration and a larger spiritual
li'e." —Mrs. A. W. Wilson.
Y. M. C. A. Port Work.
The importance and efficiency ot
the Young Men’s Christian association
“port work” may be estimated from
tl.e circumstances that one transat
lantic line of steamers asked that, a
secreatry be assigned to the ships ir
cider to carry on the work during the
voyage. Another allows the secretarie
to travel from the point of departure
to the last European port touched for
the same purpose.
This work consists of giving and re
eeiving cards of identification, helping
to get drafts cashed, to communicate
v ith friends, to secure tickets, check
baggage, etc., and the advising of as
sociations in the interior of the coming
of these immigrants, especially i
tnuy are young men. The immigrants
themselves are beginning to think and
to speak of the association as “the
great brotherhood.”
A Suggestion.
Dan Crawford, the African mission
ivy whose fascinating book, “Think
iug Black,” is rousing such enthu
siasm, tells how the converted chie"
of a heathen village came to him one
day saying: “Might not we celebrate
together the Feast of Memories?
Then, remembering who makes the
third when two are thus gathered to
gether, the missionary and the Afri
can chief, there in the jungle"? cele
prated the Lord’s Supper. “We had an
cid battered box upside down,” says
Mr Crawford, “and a mug minus a
landle, but what of that? Is it no;
Vvritten that all the vessels shall be
holiness unto the Lord?” Certainly the
reverent spirit and the * prayers do
hallow the commonest utensils, but
with hundreds of churches at home
renewing or changing their commun
ion vessels, why shouklTiot some of
tiie old sets be sent to churches ou
the mission fields?

COVPRNMENT CONSIDERING
OWN'NG POSTOFFICE CM'S
Atlanta, G., February s.—With
reference to the statements in thp
iress that the postoffice committee
of- congress is con idering the ques
tion that the government own rail
way postoffice cars instead of paying
‘‘rental’’ to the railroads for their use.
Georgia railroad officials are in re
ceipt of a copy of a statement pre
pared by Ralph Peters, who is
senting the railroads of the country
in the effort to get the government to
r> cognize the injustice which the road ,
Ciaim is being done them in connection
with the pay for transporting the
mails.
“The cost of maintaining and oper
ating these moving postoffices,” says
Mr. Peters, “constitutes an annual
sum fairly to be compared with the
original cost of the car. If the cars
were to be used merely for storage on
s'de-tracks, the rent might be reduced,
but the payment is in fact, for main
taining and hauling these cars an av
eiage of 100,000 miles per year.
“I have no comment to make upon
the suggestion that the government
should own its own railway postoffice
c;rs, but such a. plan cannot be favc
f' fairly on any plea that the railroad
a r e now overpaid for this portion of
the mail service. In fact the railroad
officers of the United States feel that
the companies are today underpaid at
least $15,000,000, for their service In
carrying the mails.”
Railroad officials in Atlanta are
hopeful, in light of facts which con
tinue to be brought out, that the pres
ent congress will be made to see the
jt.tice of the position taken by the
roads. %
