DEPARTMENT OF
PUBLIC SCHOOLS
EDITED BY
HENRY MILAM, Superintendent of Schools.
SUMMER SCHOOLS CLOSE.
Last week was certainly a busy
week for the school people over the
county.
The office force was kept on the
jump the entire week attending the
closing exercises of schools and ed
ucational rallies.
PLEASANT VALLEY.
On Wednesday Miss Lois Dowdle,
district canning club agent, gave a
canning demonstration at Pleasant
Valley school.
Mr. and Mrs. Mashburn, the for
mer teachers, and Mr. John Brock,
Hie new teacher, together with a
large crowd of children and patrons,
met us at the school for a spend-
Hie-day party. We certainly had a
pleasant and profitable day. Miss
Dowdle not only gave a demonstra
tion but made an interesting talk
about the work. The eagerness with
which the older people watched and
listened and the zeal and enthusi
asm with which Ihe boys and girls
worked showed very clearly the at
titude of the people of Pleasant Val
in y towards extension work. Both
Mr. Milam and Miss Burton made
short talks.
We would not dare close this ac
count of the day without mention
ing the progressive band composed
of the larger boys and girls in this
achool. This band holds stated
meetings even through vacation
time for self improvement and for
Hie improvement of their school.
Through fforts of the members
of this hand the interior of the
school house has just been painted
and other improvements are con
leiu.plaled. If we could have such a
band at every school house in th°
county the property would not only
b* improved hut would be protected
as well.
We hope Pleasant Valley will
profit much by Ibis day.

Aid to Busy Folks
I The telephone aids the busy farmer to keep
< in touch with neighborhood affairs even during
the rush season. He can call his neighbors in the
evening and discuss the events of the day and
arrange plans for community work after the crops
a are laid by.

Every farmer needs the help of the telephone.

ton are certainly coming to the
front in school work.
This year they supplemented the
teachers salary, nearly doubled their
average at'.endance, employed the
second teacher, built anew room
and overhauled the old one and put
in water jars, oiled their floor and
improved the out buildings mater
ially.
No .wonder when an invitation
came to spend the day with these
people we hastened to accept. While
we were t here a movemnt was start
d to paint the house and already
sufficient funds had been secured to
finish the house and a salary of
$50.00 per month guaranteed for one
of the best teachers the county af
fords. Miss Dicksie Bradley.
The day will be long remembered
ilor we enjoyed the good dinner, the
splendid hospitality, the cordial at -
iitude of the people, the co-opera
tive spirit shown and the general
progressive atmosphere that sur
rounded the occasion.
We hope the district will have
many such days and that we may
have Ihe good fortune to be invited.
SCHOOL CLOSES AT MACEDONIA.
Friday was the last day of school
aL the best one-teacher school in
the county.
Miss Armarelta Brooke, the teach
er. hacked and aided by a splendid
hoard of trustees, is doing things up
m the hills. If you do not believe
! the truth of that statement just go
Lee for yourself.
Quite a little party of educational
j workers met there Friday. Proi. R.
jC. Sharp and Dr. Moore from Wa
jleska, and Col. J. R. Whitaker, presi
jdent of the County Board of Educa
| lion, accompanied the superintend
ent and Misses Burton and Jackson.
I Prof. Sharp and Col. Whitaker made
, very enthusiastic and inspiring ad
-1 dresses. Words of encouragement
were spoken by Dr. Moore, Supt.
Milam and Miss Burton.
We spend the day with these go and
people each summer and it seems
that each occasion is more enjoy
able than the other.
One very inspiring (feature of this
! gathering was the presence of a
class of adults, some with gray hairs,
| who had been taught in the after
noon b;. Miss Brooke. Some of them
1 could nol read or write. We only
| hope that this noble work of Miss
(Brooke may inspire some other
teacher to do similar work in thei •
j communities. Let’s make the school
really aid the whole people.
CLOSING EXERCISES AT DEWEY.
In many respects the day at Dew
' y last Saturday was the best of the
week for ViDs Modeller demonstrat
ed fully t . her patorns what a real,
live, active school was. By a care
fully planned program she showed
how the school should carry on' the
j motto of Bartow county schools.

gathered at the school house to take
part in the day’s exercise.
The program consisted of field
day sports, physical culture drills,
songs and recitations. Talks were
made by county superintendent and
Miss Burton. Miss Mosteller taught a
primer class before her patrons
which was very fine and explained
o much better than she could with
words what the term correlation
means.
I have attended occasions of this
kind for a number of years but nev
er in my experience have I sen
children so well behaved and such
a spirit of good will manifested by
all present.
The day brought, large opportuni
ties; God grant that they were met.
ORPHAN WORK DAY.
Our people have become familiar
with the meaning of the words Or
phan Work Day. They mean simply
this, that there are in our orptian in
jstiiutions a great number of father
less children, dependent upon the
loving care of the Christian people
in this state. As the only means of
their support is from the voluntary
gifts of generous men, women and
youth, it may very well happen and
it does happen, that the supplies for
the support of these thousands of
orphans, run short at. !he end of the
summer, and immediate relief is
needed. And hence the inventive
mind of a zealous Georgia Methodist
preacher made the suggestion that
on the last Saturday of September,
whirh is the 26th day of this month,
our people proceed diligently t'>
work as usual and that they divide
the proceeds of that day’s work or
• heir regular income for that day,
(o the support of such a one of our
orphan institutions as appeals to
them.
Presbyterians will remember that
their institution is located across
the Savannah, at Clinton. South Car
