J. M. LANG WRITES
CARD 10 THE PEOPLE
To the People of the Cherokee Circuit:
Since the time for the election is
drawing near, I address you in behalf
of my candidacy for re-election. It
would give me great pleasure to meet
each and every one of you face to face,
and talk the matter over with you; but
1 have not the time. Only six weeks
intervened between the close of the
spring term of court and the opening
of the summer term. During three
weeks of this time 1 was kept con
stantly in the room with a child who
was critically ill. During the other
three weeks 1 traveled over the cir
cuit as much as possible.
Some court in the circuit has been
in session every week since the 2d
Monday in July except the week be
ginning on sth Monday in July. Gor
don superior court will likely run ’till
September 8 cr 9. So you see that my
time is engaged in looking after the
business of running your courts —your
business. I appeal to each and every
one of you to take care of my interest
in this race, and see that I secure a
good vote.
in asking for your vote before, I
pledged you that I would to the best
of my ability enforce the law with
impartiality and treat everybody alike.
I tealize that one sometimes makes a
powerful enemy by prosecuting a man
of influence. But I believe that a man
oi power and standing in the commun
ity is under more obligations to re
spect and obey the law than the poor
and ignorant. I warn you not to re
elect me if you expect your solicitor
general to show any special favors or
grant any immunities because of the
prominence of those who commit
crime.
I am charged with having made
seme mistakes during the time I have
been in office, but who could or would
assume the responsible duties of this
important office and make no mistakes,
especially while the work is new and
unfamiliar? I know' that the knowledge
gained during the twenty months I
have held the office better fits me to
properly discharge the duties thereof.
I would be glad that you would go to
the court records, and compare my
record with that of former solicitors
made at the beginning of their incum
bency before condemning me. What
assurance have you that my oppon
ents, either singly or as a double
team, possess any more infallibility or
knowledge of the law, or mental oj
physical strength than I have?
I make no attack upon my oppon
ent, Mr, Henson, who lives in Carters
ville, nor his assistant, Mr. Harris,
who lives at Ringgold. Their ambition
to elevate themselves is laudable, and
since they have ac'ive'y canvassed the
circuit, I presto e that most of you
know them and regard hem as clever
gentlemen. Bur will )oi elect my op
ponent simply Ik iu /;> Ives in Car
tersvblle, or becaurj he is a clever
gentleman, or because he wants the
office?
This circuit has always given the
second term to its solicitor-general.
This custom of giving a faithful public
official an indorsement an a second
term appears wise and just and is as
old as our democratic institutions and
form of government. In it the people
hold in their hands power to secure
from their public officials due and
proper regard for the rights of the
people, if it becomes a custom to deny
an endorsement even, though merited,
the people well thus lose their greatest
power over their public servants. In
my case I have only had half a term.
I am only filling out the last half of
Hon. T. O. Milner's term. Twenty
months is hardly long enough to give
one a fair trial in such an office as
this, I appeal to your sense of justice
and fairness to give me at least one
full term before condemning me as
unfit and my service as unsatisfactory.
In passing I will say that I am tak
ing no sides with anybody in the judge
■ hip and other races, and 1 do not in
tend to do so. 1 have too many friends
supporting al? the various candidates
for me to take sides. Whatever >ou
may hear you may rest assured that I
am lined up with nobody; but simply
“toting my own skillet.’
I hope that there will be no eleventh
hour circulars and defamatory reports
against me or my opponent put out to
influence your vole. Man} o. > JU * inow
me personally. Many of you are in a
measure acquainted with my work and
can judge as to mv character and
qualifications. Standing upon the same
promise to enforce the laws alike as
to the rich and the poor, the high and
the low, and promising to do .my best
to merit your continued trust tin mq,
I ask for your support. If >' oU grant
I shall be indeed grateful. If you with
hold it, I can only submit to your will,
and shall ever remember favors al
ready bestowed.
Yours very truly.
