THE BARTOW TRIBUNE
VCL, 3
WOMEN THANKED
FOR BIG OFFERING
Cartersville Sends Finest
Contribution To Wesley
Memorial Hospital.
The Wesley Memorial Hospital of
Atlanta has inaugurated the custom
of having two days a year, which oc
casions are. a “pantry shower" on
Thanksgiving Day and a “linen show
er" in the summer.
' Largely through the efforts of Mrs.
D. W. Orr the pantry shower was
brought to the attention of the Wo
man’s Missionary Society of the
Methodist church of Cartersville and
a generous response was furnished
when the call was made for help of
this nature. As will be seen from the
accompanying letter of Mrs. F. C. Har
ris, herself a former resident of Car
tersville, and lovingly remembered by
a wide circle of friends and relatives,
•the hospital authorities are both sin
cere and complimentary in recognition
of Cartersville’s contribution.
The hospital is maintained and sup
ported by the Methodist Conferences
cf Georgia and Florida. Some time
ago anew hospital was authorized to
be built, the (present one not being
ample to meet .the demands upon it.
A million dollars is to be s,pent in the
construction pf anew building, the
work on which was begun this week.
The new building will be eight stories
high and will have 100 rooms for
charity patients alone. In treating thii
fund Mr. Asa Candler, brother of Mrs.
Harris, agreed and has furnished three
dollars of the amount to every dollar
subscribed by others to build the new
hospital. The new building will likely
be completed within a year.
In the meantime the various so
cieties of the church will do much to
ward supplying comforts and needed
supplies for the hospital and the
Thanksgiving box contained 99 arti
cles for table use, leading all others
in the extent and variety of offerings
made. Mrs. Harris, through her senti
mental attachment for Cartersville,
added one more article in order to
make it an even hundred.
The following is Mr. Harris’ letter
to the Woman’s Missionary Society of
the church here:
“The committee of Ways and
Means, of Woman’s Auxiliary to Wes
ley Memorial Hospital, desire to thank
the' Woman's Missionary Society of
M. E. church, of Cartersville, Ga., and
ail of those who so generously con
tributed to the Thanksgiving ‘Pantry
Shower’ for the hospital, for the very
beautiful collection of articles sent by
them. It was the largest and most
neatly packed collection sent by any
town or city church in the state, and
if the donors could have 3een the faces
the faithful nurses and convales
cent patients as it was shown to them,
I know they would feel even a greater
interest than ever in our loved hos
pital. From it we served largely in our
fine Thanksgiving dinner. Of course
the hospital is always well supplied
with every article of food necessary
for the comfort and pleasure of its
patients, hut it is a greater source of
comfort to them to know that friends
are thinking of them in their sickness.
'As one of your very own, I am al
ways gratified when Cartersville does
her part in this great work, and
should be disappointed if lit were not
done, for I will always love Carters
rille and her people.
Cartersville had 99 articles, I made
H >IOO in my name with hers. St.
Marks was next and Inman Park next,
although I reserved my children's
"ork for the Christmas offerling.
Our beautiful new hospital was be
~"n today, it will be eight stories high
" every modern convenience and
,IHI rooms for charity alone. When it
done we will hold a big jubilee and
hen our Cartersville people must be
here.
"With love to all.
“Affectionately,
“FLORENCE C. HARRIS,
“Chairman.”
Members and others interested are
1,1 ged to provide an extra jar of fruit
preserves when these edibles are
luepared for the Wesley Memorial Hos
pital each year.

D. P. MOSS LOSES BARN
II REWARD OFFERED
Barn and Contents Fired
By Incendiaries With
Big Loss.
The barn of D. P. Moss, of Poplar
Creek, Cherokee county, was burned
to the ground last Friday night and a
loss was suffered amounting to at
least $5,000.
Mr. Moss is exceedingly well known
ia this county where he is popular and
highly esteemed. He spent last Friday
evening in Cartersville, the guest of
Chief of Police W. E. Puckett. At
about one o'clock Mr. Puckett's resi
dence was called by phone and Mr.
Moss was informed of the fire.
The fire was unquestionably of in
cendiary origin and vigorous efforts
are being made to apprehend the
guilty parties. Evidence in hand is
conclusive that the barn was set on
fire and the officers of Cherokee and
Bartow counties, as well as other
counties, are on the lookout for the
guilty parties. Mr. Puckett has de
posited a certified check for SIOO.OO
in the First National Bank pf Carters
ville as a reward for the capture and
proof of guilt of the criminals, while
the sheriff of Cherokee county has of
fered a further reward of $25.00.
Mr Moss had in his barn 800 bush
els of corn, from 20 to 50 tons of hay,
4 good mules worth probably SI,OOO,
1 horse valued at $150.00, 15 head of
cattle, >I,OOO worth of farming ma
chinery, 50 to 60 bushels of wheat, and
the building itself was worth SI,OOO.
The loss was a particularly heavy
one, comiqg just after Mr. Moss had
gathered his crop Und put away his
stuff for the winter. The sympathy of
his friends is freely extended and ev
ery effort will be made to bring the
guilty parties to a speedy trial.

CORRECTION.
In a short account given of a
shooting affray at Atco Saturday
night, November 18, on which occas
ion Jesse Brawner shot and wouuded
a young man by the name of Sloan
it was stated that Brawner borrowed
the pistol he used at the time from
Henry Jarrett, a deputy sheriff. It
appears that Brawner did not borrow
the pistol but took it without the
knowledge or consent of Mr. Jarrett
and without any right to its use or
(►ossession.
Mr. Jarrett and h)is friends are anx
ious for the public to’know that while
the pistol belonging to him he did not
loan it to Brawner, but that it was
taken from his room surreptitiously
and without his permission.

COUNTY BOARD MEEIS
10 WIND UP AFFAIRS
Big Work Going On And
Much Accomplished By
Board.
The board of commissioners of
roads and revenues met at the court
house Wednesday morning, a full
membership being present.
This is the last regular meeting of
the present board, but due to the fact
that a gveat amount of road work is in
progress over the county and a great
many matters regarding the finances
of the county are to be shaped up and
put in form, it will be necessary for
the board to hold one or more special
meetings during the month before fin
ally closing its accounts.
The board when it went into session
was confronted by a large number of
citizens from over the county and by
various officials who had business be
fore it. The wardens were present to
give a report of the state of work be
ing done by their respective chain
gangs.
Happy New\ear
Warden Leach has been engaged for
several months in putting In shape
and largely regradUng and surfacing
the Tennessee read from White north
to the county line. Much of this was
heavy work requiring the removal of
a great deal of material in order that
steep grades be reduced and that the
drainage features be cared for. This
work has been very satisfactorily done
and has added greatly to the mileage
of good highways for which the pres
ent board can justly olaim credit. Mr.
I .each is now camped at Bolivar and
the board will at this session direct
him where to go next.
Warden Stancii is now camped at
Satterfield Springs, having worked
the road from Cartersville out to this
point. He will work the right fork of
this road as far as Leachman’s place
and then return and work the road to
; Rowland Springs. Mr. Standi is put
ting this road in substantial con
dition for the wintfer.
Warden Jenkins is now camped at
Atco preparatory to undertaking the
reconstruction of the road from Car
tersville to Kingston and thence on
to the Floyd county line. This work is
very necessary lin order to comply
with the demands of the Dixie High
way commissioners who have desig
nated this way as a part of the Dixie
Highway. The work to be done on this
road will make it second to none in
Bartow county and the people cf
Kingston and Cassville are particu
larly pleased that the construction of
this road is finally to take concrete
form.
The board of commissioners will be
busily engaged at ' this session in i
„ '
winding up us affairs preparatory to
turning the business of the county
over to the new board. Three of the
pres: nt board retire, Chairman W. T.
"Burton and' Commissioners J. C. Me
tier and Dr. TANARUS, H. Baker. Two remain
on the board for the next four years,
thse being Commissioners N. M.
Adams and Walter Bradford. The new
members to take places on the board
the first of the year are N. A. White,
George H. Gilreath and G. M. Boyd.
The present board is to be credited
with the distinction of having built
more miles of permanent highway
than any board preceding it and for
having adhered to a plan of construc
tion as to width of roads, directness
of routes and establishment of easy
grades which have made all the work
such as to be highly commended by
the citizens of the county and by all
tourists who have (passed over the
highways constructed in this oounty
within the past two years.
BOARD OF EQUALIZERS
AFTER OMITTED PROPERTY.
The county board of equalizers have
been called in special session for the
purpose of placing on the tax books a
great deal of property alleged to have
l>een reported as having not been re
turned for taxation and the board is
checking up these items with a view
of placing on the tax books ail such
property as has not been returned and
causing it to bear its proportionate
part of the burden of taxation. This
board is composed of C. McEwen, Car
tersville; W. M. King, of Adairsville; j
