States Forge To Front
With * New Growing
Methods
CHICAGO, June II.—(By Asso.
ciated Prete.)—The face of agricul
ture in the middle and south west
the chief farming section of the coun
try,'haa undergone some remarkable
changes in the past ten years it i,
shown by reports from state agricuMB
tural authorities gathered here. te
The decade is indicated as one of
the most momentous that have passed
over American agriculture. Improved
methods of farming are given credit
for much of the transformation. *
In some states production of their t
old time crops has fallen off as at- "
tention focussed elsewehcre. Mean
time production per acre haa increas
ed, while other states, by advancing
their own acreage have helped to
wipe out a slack that otherwise might
have resulted. New crops have sprung
to the fore here and there. In several
states the character of farming hn-,
almost been made over.
Texas has forged *o the front un
til its agricultural chiefs claim more
wheat grown there than in some oth
er states where wheat is well nigh th-
principle crop. They declare Wicir
grapefruit and oranges, grown in th-
Rio Grande valley, equal the best.
In wheat, Kansas, which holds th-
lead. has increased its acreage near-
'00 percent in the last ten years.
The increase is 4,196,000 acres. Okln
homa, which last year stood fourth
in wheat production, meantime in
creased its planting by 1,330,001) ac
res. Iowa, the banner corn state, en
larged its wheat crop 58 percent.
On tho other hand Minnesota,
which stood second in spring wheat
last year cut its wheat production
20 percent ill the ten years while
North Dakota, which stood first in
spring wheat in 1920, also recorded
a reduction to make tray for other
crops.
While Kansas was nearly doubling
its wheat acreage, it dropped 3,363,-
000 acres from its corn planting. Ok
lahoma, which likewise saw greater
advantages for itsaelf in wheat, cut
its corn acreage hy 2,502,000. Ne
braska, which stood third in com pro
duction last year, slightly reduced its
acreage in the decade, and Missouri,
which stood fourth, cut off 1,285,000
acres.
Meantime "Iowa was enlarging its
corn production 12 percent. Minne
sota jumped its com yield 90 per
cent. South Dakota made one of its
chief advances in com production.

Wisconsin Is reported changing i
the decade from a grain growja

Michigan made nptable strides

Many farmers have hepn enabled
to go on a basis of 12 months’ pro
duction instead of only through the
