PRESTON, June 17.—The cum
mcnccment exercise, of Preston con
solidated schools began Sunday morn-
ing, June 12, with the sermon doliv
"«•, by Rev- L. B. Crantford, of
Richland. His message was the four
great universities of man, "The home,
the community, the school and the
church.”
Monday evening the audience was
entertained by the Primary and In
termediate departments, their exer
cises consisting of songs, drills, etc.,
with the final winding of the May
pole. Each child performed his part
well, reaping praises upon self and
reflecting credit on their t-achcrs.
Prof. James introduced the speak
er of Tuesday evening, H. B. Nichol.
son, of Richland, who delivered the
baccalaureate address in his usual im
pressive manner. His theme was "Ed-
ucatiqn.’ •
Following this the high school boys
and girls rendered very successfully
a five act drama, ’The Average Man.’
This, too, plainly showed that much
time and effort had been spent in
the preparnton.
After the invocation by Rev. E. T
Moore, the speaker of Wednesday
evening, Supt, M. L. Brittain, was in
troduced by Cleveland Rees, lie spoke
upon “Life, the ways and means of
making n success of the same.”
Following this were the gradua
tion exercises, the salutatory address
by D. T. Drew, class prophecy by
Miss Sarah Cosby, valedictory by
Miss Grace Rees, after which the
diplomas were delivered.
The auditorium was taxed to its
cnpacity at each performance, thus
showing the interest nnd enthusiasm
felt by both friends and patrons.
Excellent music thoughout the en
tire commencement was rendered by
Mrs. O. I.. Montgomery, piano, nrfi
eompanied by the Baptist church or
chestra.
Frank Cato Gets Place
As Hospital Interne
F. L. Cato, Jr., who is completing
his medical studies at Tulanc, has
gone to Vicksburg, Miss., where he
has been given the appointment, to-
gethcr with three other students from
Tulanc, to serve ns interne in the
Charity hospital in that city during
the summer vacation period.
Ho will return to Americus later in
the summer to spend n few days with
his parents, Dr. and Mrs. F. I„
Cato, before re-entering Tulanc for
the Tall session. I
VIENNA, June 17.—Ten negroes
indicted for murder in connection
with tho death of L. C. Davis, Jr.,
who was killed in a racial clash at
Byromvilic on May 17, and who were
to be placed on trial here today were
released yestenfay by order of Judge
O. T. Gower, presiding officer of
the Dooly county Superior court.
Causey Chapman, who was placed
on trial Wednesday on a similar mur
der charge, was found guilty by a
jury with recommendation and war
sentenced to life imprisonment. lie
is the third _ negro to be convicted
since the trials started more than
two weeks ago. Lee Adams and
Lawyer West Were also sentenced
to life terms.
It was announced that Rass Cobb,
indicted for murder, rioting ana oth-
cr rni.nor charges, and who is the
gro, it is alleged, who plotted
riot, called the inhabitants of the
gro settlement in Byromvilic togeth
cr to seek revenge for the shooting
of Fate Chapman, a negro, by Po
liceman Cunningham, was captured in
Orlando, Fla., Thursday. Officers
were sent to Florida to bring Cobb
back for trial. The negro made
escape after the officers broke
through the barricade in Fate Chap
man's house, and arrested twenty of
the negroes taking part in the fight
ing.
Solicitor Walla surprised the court
spectators when hr requested the
court to drop the Indictments against
ten of the negroes, ne contended
that he did not have sufficient evi
dence to hold them.

CAIRO, June 17.—The body
R. W. Ponder, tax collector of Grady
county, was found Thursday in a se
cluded spot about eight miles north
west of Cairo, where Wednesday
committed suicide by shooting him
self with a pistol.

before the county commissioners
Wednesday, but left his home in an
automobile and disappeared.
Two men in the the country heard
four pistol shots about noon Wednes
day' and investigation resulted in the

leaning against n stump near by.
Ponder left a Ipng letter in which
he blamed the auditor for his death,
claiming he tried 'to settle the alleged
rhortage, but that' the auditor refus
ed to give him timo to raise the mon

God that he could truthfully say that
he paid the state in full apd that there

In stating further that it was hard
for him to leave a poor, dying wife
and three innocent children on ac

auditor who found the shortage,
stating that he wan not given a fair
chance to make the shortage good.
In the closing paragraph of the
letter. Ponder refers to a severe ease
of typhoid fever two years ago and

Bullock, president of school club, was
hostess at a 6 o’clock dinner eerved

Preston High school on Wednesday
evening. Superintendent M. L. Brit
tain was the honor guest of. the oc
casion. The other guests were mem
bers of the board of education,
trustees of consolidated school, the
county commissionera and a few
friends. Prof. Jpmes gave an ad
dress of welcome. The dining room
nnd table were very attractively dec
orated with pot plants and cut flow
ers. The three-course dinner con
sisted of the following menut boiled
ham, creamed peas, rice, pressed
chicken, creamed potatoes, rolls, to
matoes, iced tea, then a fruit salad,
and cream and cake. Mrs. Bullock
was ably assisted by Miss Bonnie
Parkmdn, county demonstrator.
Miss Sadie Lunsford entertained at
a C o'clock dinner on Monday eve
ning in honor of the graduates of
Preston High school. A few other
friends were Invited. The dining
room was effectively decorated with
purple nnd gold, the class colors. Cov
ers were laid for eleven. The center
piece, appropriate to the occasion,
was a Kewpic dressed in cap and
gown, representing a senior. After a
delightful dinner the guests repaired
to the auditorium for the commence
ment exercises. The guests were
Miss Grace Rees, Sarah Cosby, Lois
Ilautman, Florence Sims, Era Lott,
Ruby Dorman, Alice Stevens, Messrs.
D. T. Drew, Harry Hawkins and
Samuel Welch.
