AS DAYS GO DOWN THE WEST.
T watched thee when the foe was at our side,
Hearty lo strike et him—or thee or me
Were safely hopeless— ready tc. divide
Aught with out- Ujviij save- love and liberty.
As days go down the west, and tender stars
All rimmed about with heavens blue conn
forth
And set their lightships in the trackless sea
ios<; ughways stretch away from south tc
north,
I think l'.ow days have risen in the east
And flashed like meteors from hill to hill,
bet full of sunny hours, till evening came
To elose them like rose petals soft and still.
I watched thee in the breakers, when the rock
Received our prow, when all was storm and
fear,
And bade thee cling to me through every shock;
This arm would lx- thy bark, or breast thy bier.
I watched thee when the fever glazed thine eyes.
Yielding m3 - couch, and stretched me on the
ground
When overworn with watching, ne'er to rise
From tlienee if thou an earlv grave liadst found.
And that my work but poorly hath been done,
And that my day in idleness hath set,
" 'U> saddened e\-es i look into the west
And watch it pass away with keen regret.
Those precious moments lost in dreaming mood,
Those perfect hours forever past me by
small wonder tliat new stars are blurred witl»
t ears.
And old days waft' <i heavenward with a sigh.
—Marion Manville in Lippincott's.
The earthquake came and rocked the quivering
wall,
And men end nature reeled ns if with wine.
Whom did I .(• k around the tottering hall?
For thee. Wi ns - safety first provide for - Thine.
And when convulsive thn es di t.i my breath
The faintest utterance to ins- fading thought.
To thee—to thee—e'en in the gasp of death
My spirit turned, oh: oft' tier than ii ought.

AVliat the Gymnasium is Doing—Reducing !
One Sided Development.
What the gymnasium is doing for the
strength and vigor of the masses in some
of our institutions of learning may be in
ferred from a single illustration taken
from the records at Harvard university.
In the year 1880. 770 men were physic
ally examined, 'flic strongest man out
of this number showed in strength of
lungs, back, legs, cie-st and arms, as in
dicated on the chart, a grand total of
675.2. At the close of the summer term
of the present year the highest strength
test recorded was 1,272.8, and there were
over 200 men in college whose total J
strength test surpassed tin-highest test of
1880. This general gymnasium work is
therefore reducing the one sided develop- i
went once so common with athletic spe
cialists.
It must not be forgotten, however, that
there is a development peculiar to the j
runner, jumper, wrestler, oarsman, gym- j
nast, hall player, heavy lifter, etc., and
anone familiar with athletics at the |
present day can easily rcccgnize one of i
these, specialists. The same training
that produced those matchless specimens !
'of human development embodied in the j
statues of the Gladiator, the Athlete,
Hercules, Apollo and Mercury of old, |
Thus much and more: and yc-t thou lov'st me not,
And never wilt: Love dwells not in our will.

dia, quinine and several others. All
this 1 did under the advice of eminent
physicians.
It was while I was in tills deplorable
condition that the claims made for
Kaskine, the new quinine, as a specific
for malaria, were first brought to my
attention. I knew nothing of its value
to justify my having any conlideuce in
it, hut as everything else** had failed 1
deemed it my duty to try it. so I began
its use, and its prompt and radical ef
fects were of tin* nature of a revelation
to me. Main' people may think the
statement scared}'credible, hut it is a
fact that after only a few days' use o!
Kaskine all the leading symptoms in my
case were decidedly abated or ceased
altogether; and in a few weeks from
the time 1 took the first dose I was
cured.
This was about the first of .January, Lumbago.

With every kind of physical exercise
the qualities at first required are the qual
ities at length developed. Speed and en
durance are required of the runner, and
these are the qualities that come to him
l>y practice. In a like manner, skill and
activity come to the gymnast and ball
player; and strength and stability to the
oarsman and weight thrower. Most of
these qualities arc accomp anied by phys
ical characteristics,
the recognized tendency of certain exer
cises to produce certain results, it would
lie impossible to prescribe special work
for individual cases. All men, however,
who practice athletics for the same
length of time anil under similar condi
tions do not attain identical results in
their physical proportions or the same-
degree of success in their athletic achieve

development of successful athletes, 1 have
