BELATED CORRESPONDENCE.
Easter at Mt. Pilgrim.
Mr. Editor:—Last Friday, Saturday
and Sunday were observed here by the
Lutheran brethren as Good Friday,
delicate varieties of fish, trout being
caught that have weighed twenty
pounds, whilst deer, wild turkeys and
birds, whose gorgeous plumage find
ready sale, can be found along their
banks. Some of these lakes have bluffs,
storm, or particularly sultry and op
pressive. The temperature following
the passage of the tornado cloud is al
ways ‘‘chilly.” * The prevailing direc
tion of destructive winds is from south
west or northwest. The motion of the

with old friends.
Messrs. S. Elder, Robert B. Perkins,
C. Russell and Willie Harris, accom

ladies as Coweta can boast, were at the
Sunday services.
The first Saturday in May has for a
long time been set apart for a reunion
of the Sunday-schools of this neighbor
hood, known as t-lie Sunday-school pic

the churches. As the years grow older
the crowd grows larger, and we expect
this to be the crowning year of all.
The programme will comprise music,
speeches, lectures, dinner, etc. We
hope to see the editor and family
among the crowd.
Prof. McCaslin, of Greenville, was
the guest of Mr. Ben Hutchinson last
Sunday.
Last week was indeed a rainy week.
Farmers are badly behind with their
spring work.
The early blooming peaches are near
ly all killed. A few scattering ones
can be seen among the late bloomers.
It is with sadness that I write you of
the death of Col. W. W. Hardy, which
occurred last Sunday morning. A noble

man has fallen. Senoia has lost one of
her cleverest citizens, the bar a towei

The Land of Flowers.
Mr. Editor:—The recent reports of
the fearful storms that have been prev
alent through the North, and as far
South as middle Georgia, require with
us quite a test of faith in the a eracity
of our friends and the papers, being in
such perfect contrast with the delight
ful weather we have had during the
month of March. A few mornings and
evenings we have closed our doors and
windows a little earlier because it. was
cooler, but this was attended with no
discomfort, as the skies were as cleai
and the sun shone as brightly as ever.
After reading of the gales and ava
lanches of snow, the line—
“There’s a land that is fairer day.”
often occurs to me as being applicable
to this section, when compared
the storm regions farther north. Per
haps Jupiter in pouring his vials of
wrath upon the earth, during lus pres
ent reign of the “Ionian period,” has
overlooked this Peninsula, ’ 1
ing from the past, we may hope that
Dr. Hicks’ predictions may prove un
true in the future.
Parties from the North are constant
ly coming out looking for lands to im
prove and cultivate, in preparation for
a winter home. When you know that
the most tender vegetables, such as
Irish potatoes, beans, cucumbers and
tomatoes have not been injured, and
that strawberries have been bearing
constantly since the middle of Decem
ber one cannot but be convinced of
the mildness and salubrity of the Cli
mate. The orange trees of this coun

easily be obtained, either by wells or
cisterns, as may be preferred. There
is an ice factory at Bartow, so water
may be made as cool as the coolest.
Some of the cereals do not thrive here,
but such a variety and abundance sup
plies their place that it seems like in
gratitude to the Maker and Giver of all
things to even mention them. The
people of this county claim good lands,
good schools and churches, and good
citizens, who extend a cordial welcome
to those whose health and circum
stances may have made it necessary to
seek a milder climate, having faith in
the growth and prosperity of their na
tive State.
Recently a delegation of General
Passenger and Ticket Agents from sev
eral States passed, on a tour of pleas
ure and observation, through Florida
to Charlotte Harbor (300 miles below
Jacksonville,) at which place the water
lias a depth of 10 feet at high tide. The
Morgan line of steamers ply regularly,
carrying the United States mail to Hav
ana, IS hours sail from this point,
touching at Key West on their route,
the telegraph being connected by cable
from these points.
The famous scientist, Mr. Edison,
lias a winter residence still farther
south, at Fort Myers, on the Caloosa-
hatcliie river, which is quite a resort
for parties out boating, to obtain a
glimpse of his handsome home, or,
perhaps, of the man of genius himself,
who has electrified and enlightened the
world with the thought and ingenuity
of his wonderful mind. H. S. S.
Homeland, Fla., March 20th, 1888.
falling motion. Generally,
the south side of the storm’s path is by
far the most dangerous, and should, if
possible, be avoided. No estimate can
be formed of the force of a tornado.
Few wooden buildings, however con
structed, will withstand the terrific
whirl of the tornado cloud or the pow
erful inrushing currents from the south
side of the storm centre. Giant trees
are either snapped off like reeds or torn
up and carried many rods away, with
tons of earth attached to the roots.
Great lanes are cut, in a few' minutes
time, through densely timbered forests,
that would take scores of men with axes
days and weeks to do. On the near ap
proach of a tornado small objects will
be seen moving swiftly into the air.
Large and weighty objects will move
from a former position. Posts will be
drawn from the earth. Trees will bend
to the ground, and large buildings will
rock and totter by some mysterious, ir-
resistable force before reached by the
whirling wind. The tornado cloud in
variably moves forward; that is, from a
westerly point to an easterly one. The
cloud may, and does very frequently,
sway from one side to the other of its
central path, and in the angle made is
the greatest destruction done.
Persons once caught in a tornado will
rarely ever overcome the dread of a
repetition of the danger.
But is there no way to escape the
destructive force of the storm? Yes,
and some suggestions will be given
which may be of service in aiding those
living in the vicinity of a tornado, if it
is desired. S.

Prognostic and Diagnostic Observa

Mr. Editor:—It seems there was a
general scare on the night of the 20th
inst. Almost everybody expected a
“cyclone.” The roar of the wind, the
patter of rain, the vivid and incessant
electrical discharges, was rather alarm-
but Tiie Herald and Adverti
ser readers will doubtless witness
many such displays before they will
see, or feel, or hear a real, genuine cy
clone. These are huge affairs, fre
quently several hundred miles across,
and rarely (if ever) does one reach this
latitude. It is a misnomer for the de
structive little tornado that, in these
late years, visits our section of country
with such alarming frequency. A tor
nado is bad enough without calling it a
“cyclone.” If the persons so badly
frightened on Tuesday night, 20th inst.,
had been a little more familiar with
the science of meteorology they would
have had no cause for alarm at the
rather unusual phenomena. A merci
ful Providence never sends out one of
these destructive tornadoes without
giving timely notice to all His creatuies
living along the track. A careful ob
server of the atmospheric changes can
foretell the approach of a tornado from
i air to twelve hours before the arrival.
