An interesting feature of the Paris
exhibition will be a group of forty-
nine structures intended to give a his
tory of the human dwelling'. The dif
ferent types of dwellings represented
will include those of tlie prehistoiic
period — under rocks, in caves, on
water and on land ; and in later times
those of early historic civilization, of
Aryan civilization, of Roman civiliza
tion in the east and in the west, and
of rude civilizations disconnected from
the general progress of humanity, such
as the Chinese, Japanese, Eskimo, Af
rican, A:lec, etc. The interiors and
surroundings will be.those oi the dif
ferent epochs studied, and it is in
tended to people the dwellings with
figures in representative costumes.—

The Harp > n Ireland.
The earliest allusion to the use of the
harp in Ireland is made in a descrip
tion of the hall of Tara, written (as
Petrie informs' e.s) in the Sixth n-
turv, wherein it is stated that in the
Third century places were set apart in
the hall for the harpers. There is still
extant, also, a poem on the death of
Colombo, written in 594,
,'hich was
original tv sung with a harp accom
paniment and the fact duly chronicled.
Later, a harp was found carved in an
ancient stone cross in l Hard ehureii-
vard. County Kilkenny, which, from
its battered and time worn appearance,
is presumably older than the i-.uitous
cross of ''.KUiasterhoyce. which .was
erected in SJO.—Musical Iierald.

Mr. J. M. Spainiiour has described, in j

some ii lies that were discovered in the
excavation of a mound in Caldwell
county, N. C. Within tlie mound was
found a skeleton lying upon its face, with
the head resting in a large sea shell,
the inner surface of which was carved
with hieroglyphics. Around the neck
were large beads made of sea slielis.
The arms were extended and bent at the
elbows, so as to bring the hands within
about a foot of the head. Around each
wrist was a bracelet, composed of cop
per and shell beads, alternating. The
copper beads appeared to have been ham
mered into thin sheets and rolled around
the string, a port of which was preserved.
Near the right hand was an injn imple

pointed, but smaller at the end away
from the handle. Tlie loft hand was
