Griggs, of San Francisco, Cal., speaking of the world’s greatest lamp, said that one of the principal at tractions of Mount Lowe, a famous summer resort in southern California, was an immense searchlight, declared to be the largest in the world. ‘‘This interesting searchlight,” con tinued Mr. Griggs, who is here on bus- ines before the departments, ‘‘is of 1,- 000,000 candle power. It stands about eleven feet in height, and its total weight is 6,000 pounds; nevertheless, it is so perfectly mounted and balanced that even a child can move it in any direction. The reflecting lens of the mammoth searchlight is three and a quarter inches thick at the edges, and it is only a sixteenth part of an inch thick nt the center, and weighs 800 pounds, its lens are regarded as a marvel of ingenuity and scientific skill. The rays are so powerful that they can be seen 150 miles away in the Pacific ocean. The beam of light is so brilliant that a newspaper can be read a distance of thirty-five miles from the light. Sit uated as it is on a hill 3,500 feet above the level of the sea. it has every scope for demonstrating its great pow er. Thousands wijo have seen it nt night have been astonished at its mar velous illuminating power. When it is in operation it is made to flash this way and that, now darting on the ocean, now flashing across the country, lighting up the surrounding mountains with a beautiful flood of light.” Two Kinds of Citizens. Patriotism manifests itself in many and various ways. Some people are willing to die for their country and a few are willing to live fo their country —which is much harder. Some are eager to show their patriotism by hold ing a job at a fat salary and some are willing to vote the party ticket straight - just because it is a party ticket. Pa triotism, says Walter Williams, is of ten another name for pride. The small ways in which patriotism may be shown seldom attracts atten tion. A soldier attacks the enemy of his country and we call the soldier a patriot. But it is patriotic also to cut down the weeds on your back lot. The soldier gives his life in a day, but the scientist who gives his life in a gener ation is also patriotic. Two kinds of citizens are in every town—patriots and traitors. There is no middle ground of neutrality. Every man is in one or the other comp. The patriot does his fuil duty to the com munity, votes, expresses his opinion, takes part in meetings for civic good and bears cheerfully his portion of the community’s work. The traitor lets the other feilow do the work, and reaps benefit by the other fellow’s pa triotism. Treason consists »sf levying war gainst the republic—or giving aid and comfort to her enemies. He gives aid and comfort to the public enemies who do not assist in making better the community in which he dwells. He is himself a public enemy. Too Good 4o Lose. The New York dry goods ’firm of Blumstein & Rosenberg had a 'traveling salesman named Richards. Richards was a good salesman and when sober a genial fellow. Once, however, after an unusually successful trip he in dulged in an unusually successful cele bration, and ended by going to sleep in the public office of the company. ‘‘Get up,” said Mr. Rosenberg, Shak ing him violently. “Rosey, go jump on yourself,” «aid hii sleepy employee. The senior partner tried it next and was rewarded with the words : "Blumstein, you go to thunder!”’ The firm held an indignation meeting and decided to dispose with Richards’ services and asked the bookkeeper what they owed this erring salesman. "Fifteen hundred dollars,” reported the bookkeeper, "Richards has sold $60,000 worth of goods in the past three months.” The partners looked at each other in silence. “Rosey,” said the senior partner, “you go jump on yourself; I’m going to thunder.” A HARD STRUGGLE 1 He Had Another Day. Pat McGuire was an inveterate drink er. For many years he had been addict ed to the use of liquor, and, although he signed numerous pledges, he was unable to break himself from the hab it. I Finally, after being arrested several times for being drunk and disorderly, Pat told the magistrate of his unsuc cessful light against liquor and asked the magistrate to help him keep sober. The magistrate was interested and promised to aid him all he could. “Pat,” said he, “I shall help you as much as 1 can. So the next time you become intoxicated I want you to re port to me on the following day.” Pat promised. About two weeks later Pat staggered into the magistrate’s office with a load he should have made two trips of. “Mornin’, magshrate,” said he. “Wash drunk yesterday.” “Drunk yesterday!” roared the mag istrate. “Why, you loafer, you’re drunk now !” “Thash all right,” said Pat, "but 1 don’t have to report thish one until to morrow. ’ ’ 1C Tutt’s Pi stimulate the TORPID LIVE! strengthen the digestive urga - . regulate the bowels, and are u equaled as an ANTI-BILIOUS MEDICINE, In mnlarinl districts their virtues r. widely recognized, as they posse peculiar properties in freeing :l system from thut poison.
