Robert Hugh Morris, pastor of the First Presbyetrian church, was the recipient of a very high honor when the degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him this morning by Northwestern University. Northwest ern has not been very liberal in the distribution of this dergee, and it is tnerefore much more of an honor than when given by many other institutions. Dr. Morris was born in Georgia in 1876 and received his education in tho public schools of that State—In tho Southwest Georgia Military Academy, (a branch of the State University,) at Emory College, at Princeton Universi ty and Princeton Theological Seminary. He is a master of arts from Princeton. His father, Rev. W. J. Morris, died when he was only 13 years old. Before coming to Evanston Dr. Morris wsb pastor of the PreBDyterian church in Ocala, Fla., Barnesville, Ga., Elmer. N. J., and the Oak Lane church at Philadelphia. From the last church he was called to the pastorate at Evanston last November. When the pastoral committee recommended Dr. Morris to the Evanston church they declared him to be the best pulpit orator among the one hundred or more preachers of their denomination at Philadelphia. He has sustained this reputation sii ee < ■ ming to Evanston. He was married in Geor gia in 1900 to Mias Lyda Mb' Addy, of Senoia. Foolish Criticism Rome Tribane-Herald. The Tribune-Herald cannot indorse the course of either the Atlanta Con stitution or the Atlanta Journal in leal- ing with the port rate decision, i’hn Constitution seems to bo doing it; boat to stir up trouble between Gov. .Smith and Commissioner McLendon. On the other hand, The Journal is much, exercised over the action of Mr. McLendon and accuse* him of bad faith. There is nothing to bear out this claim. Mr. McLendon was elected by the people, and his oath of office did not bind him to support every administration meas ure. Indeed, he would have been doing wrong had he supported port rates, or anything else, that, after investigation, he did not believe to be for the best in terests of the State. The chairman was in an embarrassing position when he was compelled to vote against a matter | upon which his former political associ ates laid so much stress. He should at least be given credit for honesty, and courage beyond the ordinary, when he went contrary to the wishes of the ad ministration. UR.KING'S NEW DISCOVERY Will Surely Slop That Cough. Hon. Jos. M. Brown will win tho last ing gratitude of tho common, everyday taxpayers of Georgia if he will continue to eschew the spectacular and give the State a plain, business administration, with economy as the watchword. This Georgia has needed for some years, notwithstanding tho present Governor is a man of wonderful business ability. An administration, however, at this time devoted almost wholly to the business of running the machinery of state care fully and safely will find the balance of affairs falling into line in a manner most unbelievable.— Moultrie Observer. A member of the Nebraska Legisla ture was making a speech on some mo mentous question, and in conclusion said: “In the words of Daniel Webster, who wrote the dictionary, ’Give me liberty or give me death.’ ” One of his colleagues pulled at his coat-tail and whispered: “Daniel Webster did no-t write the dictionary; it was Noah.” “Noah’nothing , ” repeated the speak er, “Noah built the ark.” One case of whooping cough may make a barrel of trouble. Sickness Is ' Unnecessary to demonstrate the value of the telephone in the farm home. In any emergency the tele phone performs a func tion which no other agency can equal. The doctor can be called quicker than the horse can be hitched up. Neighbors can hi summoned inst.mtly. It is invaluable for the convenience and protection of the housewife. <3 For information and booklet about the Bell plan write to nearest Bell telephone manager or to Farmers’ Line Department Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co. The editor of n Kansas paper says of the new series of currency 'The head of Liucoln uppoars on the new silver dollar, the bast of Cleveland will be on the new $10 certificate, and that of Grant on the $50 one. We’ll get a sight of Lincoln now arid then, and occasionally muy scrape an acquaint ance with Cleveland; but good-bye, General Grant, and God bless you!” It shouldn’t be so difficult to carry the day. It is much lighter than the night. It is the opinion of an exchange that the biggest hypocrite in the world is the fellow who says grace over a three-pound roast that the never intends to pay for. At the same time, it is not at all difficult to imagine how sin cerely grateful that fellow really feels for the special dispensations of Provi- d nee. The fat lady and the living skeleton expect the museum manager to stick to them through thick and thin.
