A SERMON
In Defense of the Christian’s Bible,
Against Deism and Universalism
—Delivered by Rev. J. G. Fry

All scripture is Riven by inspiration
of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruc
tion in righteousness, that the man of
God may be perfect, thoroughly fur
nished unto all good works: II. Tim.,
3:16-17.
I shall undertake to prove—
1. The existence of God by creation.
2. Without the bible God is unknown
'in His true character.
3. The bible is the Word of God, and
but one Book.
4. Through the bible God is known to
save and to destroy.
6. The eternal salvation of the right
eous.
6. The everlasting punishment of the
wicked.
First, we are to prove the existence
of God by creation. When we take an
extended view of the earth, seeing that
it is 24,000 miles in circumference and
8,000 in diameter—when we view it in
constant motion, bringing day and
night and the four seasons of the year
with unvarying regularity—and view
that great body of light, the sun, that
illuminates the world, and the moon
with her beautiful light borrowed from
the sun—I say, when we view the
heavenly planets in their regular move
ments, with all their glory, the world
of mankind, even the heathen world,
should be convinced that there is a God.
When we view all creation, in its regu
lar movements as it appears to the hu
man family, it is the greatest piece of
machinery ever beheld by man. “The
fool hast said in his heart, There is no
God.” Ps., 14:1.
Second. Without the bible God is un
known in His true character. Thpugh
we view in creation such a witness of
the existence of God, yet without the
bible God is unknown in His true char
acter. Through faith we understand
that the worlds were framed by the
word of God; bo that things which aft
Been wore not made of things which do
appear. Heb,, 11:3. So, then, faith
onmoth by hearing, and hearing by the
Word of God, Horn., 10:17. All the
■enlightened world, without the bible,
could not have numbered the years
back to the time when this world was
spoken into existence. How beautiful
find wonderful is the character of God,
ub set forth in the 1st and 2d chapters
of Genesis, as tho God of creation in
forming the world in six days, ending
His work on the seventh and calling it
His own. And God blessed the seventh
■day and sanctified it, because in it He
rested from all His work, which God
created and made. Gen., 2:3. We nev
er could havo known God in the
Sabbath day and tho command to keep
it holy without His word. As we read
on wo gather the command of God to
Adam and Eve, and how they trans
gressed it and fell under his curse. The
first promise we read we find in rela
tion to the coming of Christ: “And 1
will put enmity between thee and the
woman, and between thy seed and her
seed, and it sh ill bruise thy head and
thou shalt bruise his heel. ” Gen., 3-16.
In tho 20th chapter of Exodus you will
find the Ten Commandments, or, as we
sometimes call it, the Moral Law. '
How wonderful is His character there
displayed! According to the teaching of
tho bible wo have all transgressed God's
holy laws. They have all gone out of
the way; they are together become un
profitable; there is none that doeth
good, no, not one. Rom., 3:1. The Old
and New Testaments not only reveal God
as tho creator and lawgiver, but as the
author und finisher of redemption. The
Lord hath appeared of old unto me,
saying, “Yea, I hath loved thee with
everlasting love; therefore, with loving
kindness have 1 drawn thee. Jer., 31-3.
I have made a covenant with my chosen;
I have sworn unto David, my sefvant.
Ps., 89:3. The God of peace that
brought’again from the dead our Lord
Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep,
through the blood of the everlasting
covenant. Heb., 13:20.
The glorious plan of salvation as re
vealed in the bible was formed before
the dust of the world was made, before
the mountains were settled, before the
hills were brought forth; while as yet
ho had not made the earth, nor the
fields, nor the highest part of the dust
of the world: Prov,, 8:26-26. Rejoicing
in the habitable part of His earth, and
my delights were with the sons of men.
Prov., 8:21. For unto us a child was
born, a son is given, and the covenant
shall be upon His shoulderB and His
name shall be called Wonderful Coun
Bellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting
Father, the Prince of Peace: Ib., 9-6.
For God so loved the world that He
gave His only begotten. Son, that who
soever believeth in Him should not per
ish, but have everlasting life: John,
3-16. But, as it is written. Eye hath
not seen nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man the things
what God has prepared for them that
love Him: I. Cor., 2:9. And without
controversy great is the mystery of
godliness. God was manifest in the
flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of an
gels, preached unto the Gentiles, be
lieved on in the world, received up into
glory: I. Tim., 8-16.
Thirdly. The bible is the Word of
God, and but one Book. Here, my
brethren and friends, I approach an im
portant part of my subject. I am to
speak against hundreds of infidel wri
ters, many scholars and authors, such
Thomas Paine, Voltaire, and others.
Paine in his “Age of Reason” took up
the bible from Genesis to Revelations.
He has denied its being the Word of
God in toto. He has endeavored to dis
prove it by asking BUch questions as to
entangle bible readers. I have heard
some such questions by his followers.
For instance—How did Moses get pos
session of a knowledge of the forma
tion of the world and the genealogy of
man up to his day? It has been an
swered, He did it by tradition. Another
question is, Who wrote the last two
verses of the fifth book of Moses? It
answered, Joshua. I positively
deny the correctness of both answers.
Joshua wrote his own book. The argu
ment of the infidol is that when the
verses alluded to were written Moses
was dead. I answer that it was just
as easy for Moses to record his own
death and burial by inspiration before
they took place, as it was to record any
other inspired writing; for the prophe
cy came not in old times by the will of
man, but holy men of God spake as
they were moved by the Holy Ghost:
I. Pet., 1:21. And He gave unto Moses
when He had made an end of commun
ing with Him upon Mt. Sinai two ta
bles of stone, written by the finger of
God: Ex., 31:18. All scripture is given
by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correc-

When Brown & Brooks state that
they have a remedy that is guaranteed
to cure any man or woman who suffers
from food fermentation which causes
belching, sour stomach, gas eructations,
heartburn and that lump of lead feeling
in the abdomen or money back, what
are the poor stomach sufferers in New-
nan and vicinity going to do about it?
The name of this most remarkable
stomach prescription is Mi-o-na. Most
people call them Mi-o-na stomach tab
lets because they know that there is no
remedy so good for indigestion or stom
ach disorders. Here is one opinion:
“I have been troubled with indiges
tion for more than a year. I bought
one box of Mi-o-na and it cured me.
Now I would not be without a box in
the house for $50. It saves a lot of
doctor bills when you can be cured for
60 cents. You can use my name if you
want to.’’ — Arthur Sederquest, 6 Nich
ols street, Wakefield, Mass. Nov. 7,
1909.

tion, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be perfect;
thoroughly furnished unto all good
works. It is clear from these quota
tions, and from other passages in con
nection, that Mcses was moved by the
spirit of God, and that his five books
were written by the finger of God,
which is the Spirit of God. Paine, in
one of his arguments, brings up the
genealogical tables recorded in the first
chapter of Matthew and in the third
chapter of Luke, and makes this quo
tation: “And Jesus Himself began to
be about thirty years of age, being (as
was supposed) the son of Joseph, which
was the son of Hete. In Matthew it
says Joseph was the son of Jacob. This
comparison is made for the purpose of
proving a contradiction between the
two tables. There is, however, no con
tradiction. Luke rocords the genealo
gy of Mary, and makes fourteen gener
ations more up to David than does Mat
thew, who records-the genealogy of Jo
seph. Mary descended from Nathan
and Joseph from Solomon, both sons of
King David. Paine acknowledged the
existence of God, and speaks of Him
in the moat exalted manner, but denies
that He has given to the children of
men any revelation of Himself through
Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit. He
admits that God could have given a
revelation, but has not done so. I am
not in favor of using what is called hu
man reasoning to prove that the bible
is revealed word, but all infidel writers
resort to this mode of reasoning, and
feel justified in ’meeting their argu
ments in the same way. For example,
I will suppose the existence of a man
unsurpassed in wisdom and wealth,
goodness, and every other quality
which we regard as belonging to the
best of men, and in addition he has
been living (we will say) for five hun
dred or a thousand years. We will
further suppose he had possession of
vast bodies of land, the best that the
world affords. On this possession he
has thousands of servants, sufficient to
occupy the whole territory. This man,
however, does not reside on his posses
sions, but lives thousands of. miles dis
tant. His servants have never received
any instructions from him, either in
person or by agent, as to what he re
quires of them, and are in ut£er igno
rance on this subject. He has given
them no laws for their government.
He has never visited them, though he
has the power to do so, but chooses
to keep them in ignorance both of his
true character and of his wishes to
wards them.
Now is it reasonable to suppose that
such an example as this could exist?
Is it according to common sense? The
ready response of every one would be,
No. Yet such is.the character of God,
as given by the infidel. The world is
mine, and the fulness thereof: Ps., 50:
12. If our bible - does not contain God’s
revealed will towards His creatures,
where else are we to look for it? We
argue that it is the written revelation
of God’s will to us, his creatures. It
proves itself to be such. Human de
pravity, with all its iniquity, could nev
er have invented such laws, rules and
precepts as it contains, and the finger
of God is clearly to be seen in it through
out. It is the book of all books.
Now to the testimony of the bible in
proof of its own validity. It has with
stood the criticism of ages. It has
been preserved, though great efforts
have been made for its destruction. It
is the foundation upon which the laws
of all civilized nations have been built;
yea, it is the bulwark of civilization
itself. Salvation will God appoint for
walls and bulwarks: Ps,, 26:1. The
symbols, types and ceremonies of the
Old Testament, pointing to Christ and
His mission in the New with unvary
ing accuracy the history of the Jews
and the prophecies concerning that
nation of people, have been verified
even before the eyes of the present
generation; also, the prophecy con
cerning John, the harbinger, and
Christ, the Messiah, all go to prove the
authenticity of the Chistian bible.
While kingdoms and empires have
risen and disappeared amidst the polit
ical convulsions of the world, and
everything human has been subject to
change, the Word of God has remainid
fixed and unchanged.

SOLD BY ALL DRUGGISTS;
I have said that the Old and New
Testaments—in other words, the bible
—is one book. I mean to convey the
idea that it is one, as a revelation of
God’s will. The fact that the ccremp-
nial laws given by God to his ancient
people, the Jews, in the Old Testament,
have abrogated some new' laws under
the New Testament dispensation, does
not in the least destroy their identity.
The object for which they were given
having been accomplished and fulfilled
in Christ, their observance would be
without force or meaning, they being
instituted for the purpose of pointing
forward and not backward. And the
laws of the Old Testament," making
perfect obedience the condition of sal
vation, was also fulfilled in Christ,
who, in His own person, wrought out
this perfect obedience For Christ
came not to destroy the law, but to
fulfill; and the fulfilled flaw made the
