CONSOLATION.
Oh, doom not they ore In-Hi alone
Whoso liven a peaceful tenor keep:
The power who p(Uee man has nhown
A blowing for the eye« that weep.
The light of ftmilc* nhall fill agnin
The lld» that overflow with tears;
, And weary hour* of woe and pnln
Arc promises* of happier year*.
There is a day of sunny rest
For every dark and troubled right;
And grief may bide an evening guest.
And joy shall come with early light.
And thou, who o'er thy friend's low bier,
Doet shod the bitter drops like rain.
Hope that brighter, happier sphere
Will give him to thy arms again.
Nor let the good man’s trust depart.
Though life its common gifts deny—
Though with a pierced and bleeding heart.
And spurned of men, he goes to die.
For (»«xl hath piarked each sorrowing day
And numbered every secret tear.
And heaven's long age of bliss shall pay
For all his children suffer here.

Judge Adamson’s Good'Work in
Congress
Hoht. M. fiates. In Cqjuinbus Fncjuirer-Sun.
Washington, June 24.—The session
of Congress, now about to adjourn,
will be remembered chiefly for the
arduous work it imposed upon the more
important committees of the two
Houses, the brunt of the unusual labors
falling upon the Interstate and Foreign
Commerce Committee of the House
and the Commerce Committee of the
Senate. In the tense activities of
the House Committee on Interstate
and Foreign Commerce Representative
W. C. Adamson, of Georgia, has been
conspicuous in his devotion to his task.
For seven months he has been engaged
constantly either in the committee con
sidering numerous bills before it, or
considering reported bills from that
committee in the House. This work
included every conceivable phase
and interest in the commerce of the
country—all regulation of railroads and
steamboats, safety appliances, dams,
lighthouses, lightships, revenue cutters,
lifesaving service, houys, range lights,
quarantine, all regulations affecting
trade and health, and everything per
taining to the Panama canal and the
canal zone.
For live months of that time a fight
was in progress over the greatest and
most important railroad bill ever con
sidered, Mr. Adamson and one or two
of his associates on the committee
fought the bad features of that bill for
a long time before they secured any
assistance, and before the country
apprehended the true character of the
legislation. Finally they Bucceeded in
practically eliminating the bad pro
visions and substituted good ones,
with the result that, the bill recently
passed. Instead of being the worst
bill over introduced in Congress it would
bo the best ever passed but for two ob
jectionable features which the minority
could not eliminate. The Administra
tion insisted upon their retention, for
the sake of the patronage they afforded.
Throughout the arduous labors of the
Commerce Committee, which does
more work than all the other com
mittees combined, Mr. Adamson, as
the ranking Democratie member, had
to bo on duty the entire time. The
other minority members have other
commit^teo assignments which divide
their attention, but Mr. Adamson
gave the work his undivided attention,
and as a result of his earnest devotion
the bill contains many commendable
features which the country will not be
remiss in acknowledging. In addition
to his manifold duties in connection
with the preparation of the railroad
bill, Mr. Adamson has kept up the
routine work affecting the interests of
his immediate constituents.
In conjunction with Representative
Henry D. Clayton, of Alnbamu, he has
concluded twelve years of effort to
effect a deep water outlet for the
Chattahoochee system of rivers, which
they have done by securing a channel
from the river into St. Andrews Bay,
which will in effect make Columbus
and Eufaula seaport towns. These two
gentlemen also secure^ ample appro-
priations^ to continue the work of im
proving the system of rivers. Mr.
Adamson’s activities in Washington
also include the getting of many
pensions for citizens of his district
increased appropriations for Newnan
and LaGrange sufficient to complete
fine public buildings in those towns:
also an appropriation of $45,000 and a
site to start a building at Carrollton.
Having some time ago secured the
completion of a handsome public
building at Columbus, there is now no
other town in the \iistrict at present
eligible for a public building, though

Mr. Adamson persisted in his efforts, A.t the New Willard they were talkipg

to perfect the mail distribution in his
district until it is almost universal. He
is confident of his ability to have Pine
mountain included in the Appalachian
forest reserve and so preserve that
magnificent watershed, not only to aid
in regulating the flow of the Chattahoo
chee, but to furnish a water supply in
the near future to a number of towns
on both sides of the mountain.
At the end of the present week Mr.
Adamson will return to his home, after
a most strenuous session, and deserving
of the highest commendation of the
people of his district. During -the
vacation session he will visit among his
constituents, "which he says “is th%

mingle with them, meet them face to

learn their sjggestions and views, and

constituents desire to ask him about his
public duties, or any matter of interest

“As old Knute goes, so goes Minne
sota.”
That is the theory on which the great
mass of Republican voters in Minnesota
decide public questions of moment, ac
cording to a memlx^- of the House
from that State. »
They tell a story in the Senate
cloak-rooms about a campaign orator
who was delivering speeches in Minne
sota. He marveled at the hold Nelson
had on the people of the State. One
day he was discussing the subject with
a Norwegian political boss. To his
amazement he discovered that the rest
of the, folks in Washington who were
generally supposed to have something
to do with shaping the destiny of the
nation were a lot of amateurs when
compared with Nelson. He therefore
decided to put the matter to a supreme
test,
“Knute Nelson," the Norwegian
boss had declared, “he ban smart fel
ler. Smartes’ feller in / the whole
worl’.’’
“Do you think Nelson is as smart as
the Almighty?” the campaigner asked.
“Wal, answered the Norwegian,
scratching his head reflectively,
‘Knute, he ban young feller yet."
a Western newspaper, a genial soul
with hosts of friends, who has lost the
use of his hands through paralysis. It
was narrated how he sat. down one
night, apparently in perfect health, to
write his story,’ when his useless fin
gers fell loosely among the keys of his
typewriter and he has never been able
to write since. He has to dictate all
his stuff, which is as virile and as opti
mistic ^as ever.
Apropos of this another man,said:
“I was coming over to Washington
from New Y'ork not long ago with a
party of friends, and we were passing
the time playing seven-up. Busily en
gaged in playing, I did not notice when
a man from behind touched me on the
shoulder. When he did again I turned
around. In a quiet, even voice the
stranger said:
“ ‘May I speak to you a moment,
please?’
“I. was annoyed at being interrupted,
but there was something in his plea
that startled me. I laid down my cards
and went around to his seat.
“xU'm so sorry to disturb you,’lie
said, as he grasped my hand in a grip
■so fierce that it hurt, ‘but—I’ve just
gone blind. I can’t see at all—God help
me.’
“It was true. He had been stricken
with blindness, and we had to help him
off at the union station and telegraph
back to his friends in New. York to
come and get him.”
Talk about life’s tragedies!
"I understand that you called on the
plaintiff. Is that so?"
“Yes,” replied the witness.
“What did he say?”
The attorney for the defense jumped
to his feet and objected that the con
versation could not be admitted in the
evidence. A half hour's argument fol
lowed, and the jqdges retired to their
private room to consider the point.
An hour later they filed into the court
room and announced that the question
might be put.
“Well, what did the plaintiff say?”
. “He weren’t at home, sir,” came the
answer.

Story of a Beautiful Life.
Only a baby with - fluttering, velvety
hands, rose-petal lips and dream-kissed
eyes—love’s evangel, a dainty, slumber
ing little queen whose every wish is an
ticipated and about whose throne the
brightest and best of the realm is gath
ered! Sleeping or waking her rule, is
absolute; love and loyalty are watch
words of her subjects—only a baby
loved and caressed!
Only a little maiden with wind-tossed
curls, sun-browned cheeks, eyes that
sparkle with delight or with the sorrows
and mysteries of childhood—a little
fledgling of the home, whose cheering
songs and winsome ways lighten care
and rob labor of weariness and trans
form sacrifices into privileges! Only a
little maid with wonderful eyes open to
the dawn.
Only a bride, white-robed and beauti
ful, going away from a love that is tried
and true to gladden another home;'to
begin the new, untried life, the life of
fond hopes and glorified dreams! A
hush, a few irrevochble words, and the
future whose richest tints will be min
gled in the crucible of love begin!
Only a wife, honored and beloved, an
uncrowned queen in her native domain,
the gold of whose character shines
brightest when the clouds of adversity
hang lowest! Comforter whose hands
with equal tenderness have smoothed
from the brow of manhood its lines of
care and dried from the cheeks of child
hood its tears—only a wife, a womanly
sovereign in the realm of home!
.Only a mother, faded and old, the
once luxuriant hair fast whitening and
thin. The fulness and bloom of youth
have given place to the wrinkles and
palor of age—the hands that once deft
ly did service for others lack their ac
customed skill. The feet that once ran
quickly on errands of love move with
the hesitancy of years—but the eyes,
the windows of the soul, beam with a
true love light-, and, like the “King’s
Daughter, ” she is all glorious within.
Only a darling mother with folded
hands, and face turned to sunBet skies,
waiting to go from labor to rest-
waiting to cross over to the home of
the blest!
Why Salves Fail to Cure Eczema.
Scientists are now agreed that the
eczema germs are lodged not in the
outer skin or epidermis, but in the in
ner skin. Hence, a penetrating liquid
is required, not an outward sa’lve that
clogs the. pores.
We recommend to all eczema patients
the standard prescription, Oil of Win-
tergreen, as compounded in liquid form
known as D. D. D. Prescription. A
trial bottle of this D. D. D. Prescrip
tion, at only 25 cents, will instantly
relieve the itch. We have sold and rec
ommended this ‘remedy for years, and
knew of some wonderful cures from its
use. We recommend it to our patrons.
