Fine Old County is Coweta.
Smith Clayton In Atlanta Constitution
In a running talk with Hon. Joseph
T. Kirby, of Coweta, one of the great
est and most progressive cdunties in
Ccorgia, he gave some very interesting
polnta concerning the wonderful growth
of Newnan and the steady progress of
that section of the State.
Mr. Kirby is one of the brightest,
strongest and most popular young men
in Georgia. He is serving his first term
in the Legislature, and is making an
excellent member of the House. He
makes friends easily, and, better still,
holds them.
There is not a more progressive city
of its size in the country than Newnan.
It may not bo generally known, but it
is a fact that Newnan Btanda fifth among
citiee of her size in wealth and per
enpita importance in the United States.
With a population of 6,000, she grows
steadily and solidly in the most mod
ern way. She owns her splendid elec
tric lighting plunl und her fine system
of waterworks. Her aewerago syBtem
is excellent. Her streets and sidewalks
are paved with cement blocks. There
nro no better in the big cities of Geor
gia. Ground has bedfi"broken for u Gov
ernment building and postofiice, which
will cost upwards of $70,000. The new
court-house would be an ornament to
any metropolis. It is of beautiful archi-
tectual design, built of brick, and cost
$75,000. Some idou of the volume • of
buBineua done in Newnan may be gleaned
from the fact she has four strong banks
-three national and one State. Her
public school system cannot be excelled
in the South. I had almost forgotten to
say that the court-house was built with
out a bond issuo. The expense of con
struction was defrfiyed by devoting two
years’ taxes of the people to the
structure.
There are some valuable plants at
Newnan. The fertilizer plant of the
Oowota Fertilizer Co., one of the largest
in the South, is located at "Newnan.
The R. D. Colo • Mfg. Co., whose
'engine and boiler-making plant is
said to be tho largest of its kind in
the South, is there. There is a buggy
factory, and no leun thun three groat
•cotton mills, each employing hundreds
of operatives. Other small manufac
tories there ure.mhowing that this great
little city knows that in diversified in
dustries, large and small, lies tho secret
of growth in wealth and population.
Cowotu county produces in round
numbers 311,000 halos of cotton a year,
and most of it ia handled in Newnan.
Heavy shipments of cotton nro made
also .to Grantville, Senoia, Haralson,
Sharpsburg, Turin, Moreland nnd liny-
mo»d. All are prosperous, growing towns
ranging from 300 to 1,5l)0 in population.
There ate backhand and overall facto
ries at Senoia, ami a number el ginuor
ion F.ach ef the towns named has a
bank, and handles a line trade. There
are other towns of a few hundred poo
pie in Coweta, and there are other
bnokx. That is one of the best ways of
saying that Coweta is one of the great
est business counties in Georgia.
Some time age one of Georgia's moBt
distinguished men said that there is no
richer section ef country in America
than the territory covered by the coun
ties of Coweta, Meriwether and Troup,
This arises from three fuels, to-wit:
Fertility of noil, natural resources, in
telligence in development, nnd the on
orgy of the people.
Many farmers in Coweta am turning
to intensive farming, and are reaping
the rich result^ which flow from thor
ough cultivation of small farms. On
some of these farms two bales of
cotton to tho. sere are made right along,
and 100 bushels of corn to the acre is not
uncomtnon. Oats are cultivated with
wonderful success, and the marvelous
increase in productiveness on small
tracts of land cultivated to tho highest
degree, to say nothing of tho saving in
time, toil and money, and the enrich
ment of intensive farmers—these things
are revelations! Coweta is finding out
that intensive farming is a short cut to
even greater riches than she is wringing
from the bountiful soil, and in the net
distant future it is predicted that inter-
sivo farming down there will become
general. As it is, many farmers raise
their own supplies, and the sales of
meat and com to farmers by dealers
are decreasing yearly.
Convicts have been worked upon the
public roads of Coweta for about seven
years, and the consequence is a public
road system of which any county might
justly be proud. As a matter of course

good road-building, has very greatly
enchanced the value of farming lands.
During tho post five years land values
have increased 100 per cent. Good form
land may be bought from $25 to $100 per
acre. Recently a farming tract of 1,310
acre! sold for $33,000—$25 an acre. But
the best farming lands are not for sale
at any price, and some excellent farms
would bring much more than $100 an
aero.
Still another factor in the enhance
ment of land values in Coweta has been
the railroads. Indeed, the building of
the old Atlanta and West Point rnil-
rend through that section gave Coweta
her firBt great impulse to real develop
ment. The building of other railroads,
including the Central and tho Atlanta,
Birmingham and Atlantic, have aided
in keeping up and expanding this great
work of development.

John A. Bernhard, a local lawyer,
was recently assigned to defend a man
charged with stealing a gold watch
from a minister. ’ Bernhard believed
the story told by the man and worked
hard in the case, although be had no ex
pectation of getting any money out of
his client.
After listening to an impassioned ap
peal from Bernhard, asserting his
client’s innocence, the jury brought in
a verdict of not guilty.
Tho client was effusive with thanks
and regretted he hod no money to give
the lawyer for his services.
“Thai's all right," said Bernard,
"some time when you get hold of a $20
bill bring it to me and we’ll call it
square.”
Bright and early the next morning in
walked the man with a $20 bill.
“Whv, where did you get this, so
quicklyl” asked the astonished Bern-
hard.
"Oh, 1 sold the minister’s watch last
night,” was the calm reply.
Bernhard did not accept the money.

my clothes.”
Sheriff VVible courteously told her she
could go Into an adjoining room. “Will
you please take care of baby' while 1
dreFs?" Mrs. Clinger asked sweetly.
Of course, Sheriff Wible would. He
and Detective I’urdy amused themselves
with the youngster while the rustle of
feminine apparel came from the adjoin
ing room.. Then there came u plaintive
voice: "Oh, I must have some one to
button my dress up the back. Can’t
one of you gentlemen do it?” Sheriff
Wjble blushed and Detective Purdy
stammered.
“Not for mine,” the Utter gasped.
"A couple of policemen got fired not
long ago for being in the room while a
woman prisoner dressed. ”
"Well, I have to get somebody,’
Mrs. Clinger replied through the por
tieres. "Let me go over to Mrs. Flem
ing's next door and she’ll button me
up.”
Sheriff Wible gave a sigh of relief
and hurriedly agreed. Mrs. Clinger left
the house and Sheriff Wible and Detec
tive Purdy sat down to play longer with
the baby, while they waited for Mrs.
Clinger to return.
An hour later they went to Mrs.
Fleming to learn how many buttons
were on the dress that required such a
length of time to button, They found
Mrs. Clinger had not been there.

Life in Colonial Virginia.
Everybody's Magazine.
In no part of the world were social
distinctions more rigidly defined than in
colonial Virginia. The founders of that
colony stepped from the brilliant court
of Elizabeth into the forests of Vir
ginia. The lord-proprietor transported
to his estate a little army of gentlemen
and indented servants, and afterwards
came the negro slave. Each formed a
class apart from the others, and almost
at once there was created a quasi-sys
tem of aristocracy.
The proprietor obligated himself to
protect his tenants from the Indians;
they in turn agreed to follow him to
battle—precisely the system inaugura
ted by William the Conqueror for the
military defense of his realm. His en
vironment naturally bred certain habits
of command, fostering a capacity for
directing the efforts of others, and im
posed .a sense of responsibility upon
the planter for the lives that were in
his keeping.
Above all else, the planter jealously
guarded his rights as an English free
man, When liberty languished in Eng
land, the Virginian sturdily resisted ev
ery aggression of royal tyrants. One
husband, one wife, one home, one king,
one God—this was the planter’s creed.
But he reserved the right to renounce
a monarch who violated the ancient
compact between king and people. No
other people, numerically as unimpor
tant as that group of Virginia settlers,
■has given to humanity so many states
men, soldiers, orators, patriots and
philosophers.

One day she went to tea with her
auntie, and her hands were just a shade
grubbier than usual. You nee, she had
been trying to make marbles from some
soft asphalt that the road-makers had
leftover.
‘Effle,” said her aunt, "how dirty
your hands are! Whf:t would you say
[ auntie came to tho table with hands
like that?” ^
‘Oh,” said the lady of the golden
locks.- “I'd be too polite to say any
thing about it.”
Then auntie changed the subject.
