Some Politics in Georgia This
Year.
Atlanta, March 2. Tho announce
ment of Attorney-General T. S. Felder
for the United States Senate, following
closely upon the positive statement of
Congressman T. W. Hardwick, of the
Tenth district, that he proposed to make
the race for that ollice, haH somewhat
upset political calculations.
It has long been regarded as almost
settled that Mr. Felder would make the
race for Governor to succeed Gov. Sla
ton, anil he was expected by politicians
generally to announce for that office
this year. His announced determina
tion to enter the race for the Senate,
therefore, rather uiisots the situation
in two directions.
Mr. Felder nnd Mr. Hardwick are
both of the same school of politics.
Both have been ardent friends and sup
porters of Senator Hoke Smith, and it
is regarded by many as rather surpris
ing that they should seek to lock horns
in this contest.
It has been suggested that there has
been a possible break between Smith,
and either Folder or Hardwick; but
friends of the two officials express the
belief thut the only explanation of it ia
personal political ambition and a belief
in opportunity.
John K. Cooper, of Macon, has al
ready announced for Senator Hacon’s
unexpired term, and there are possibili
ties of this becoming a four-cornered
race.
In fact, an interesting four-cornered
race would follow if Gov. Slaton should
decide, ub it is believed ho originally in
tended, to make the race for the rest
of Senator Huron's term. Ho was un
doubtedly aware of prospective opposi
tion of this sort in the event he sought
to carry out that purpose; but now that
two candidates, both of the opposite
school of politics, have made their ap
pearance, it has apparently become a
serious question us to what he will do.
There is an opinion, which seems to
be voiced most strongly among those
who have all along sought to induce
him to oppose Senator Smith, that he
will not have to take that step in an
swer to what they consider a political
challenge, as the result of Hardwick's
announcement.
On the other hand, it has come direct
from Senator Smith himself that he
has taken no part in the Senatorial sit
uation so far as concerns the successor
of Senator Bacon, and that he does not
propose to do so. Senator Smith has
made it char that he is interested only
in the suceessorship to his own seat, for
which he will, of course, be a candi
date, and that so far as the other race
is concerned, he will keep hands off.
i’oliticians see some significance in
the statement of Col. VV. S. West, to
the effect that he has not yet decided
as to whether he will he a candidate
for Senator Hacon’s unexpired term.
They take this to mean that there is a
possibility of Slaton's opposing Smith.
They argue that the logic of the situa
tion is that West would naturally re
tire in ease Slaton should desire to run
for Senator Hacon'B unexpired term,
but that if the Governor should run
against Senator Smith, then that would
relieve Mr. West from any obligation
to him, and he would be free to make
the race for Senator as a South Geor
gia candidate. Considering Senator
West’s attitude, therefore, it would ap
pear that no settlement has been
reached as to the Governor’s plans, ex
cept that he proposes to run for one of
the two seats in the Senate, leaving the
question as to which one for future de
cision, depending upon developments.
Attorney-General Felder's announce
ment for the Senate has also materially
changed the situation ns to the pros
pective race for Governor. It takes
him out of that fight, in which there ia
no question that he would have been a
strong factor.
It is likewise considered that the ap
pointment of Col. West to the Senate
removes him from consideration in con
nection with the fight for Governor.
Thus it would seem that the contest
for this office is to be left, so far as
present indications show, between I’res-
ident of the Senate J. Randolph Ander
son and Speaker of the House Wm. H.
Burwell.
President Anderson will go in as Gov
ernor pro tern, upon Gov. Slaton’s res
ignation, which will probably take place
at a time that will make it unnecessary
to call a special election, thus giving
Mr. Anderson a six-months’ term ub
Governor, and a Hplendid leverage with
which to make the race.
That Speaker Burwell will be in it
there is practically no question. He
haa demonstrated remarkable ability in
handling the gavel in the House, and
his work in the legislature and his as
sociations in Georgia politics will make
him a formidable candidate.

Two mon motoring through the Tenn
essee mountains sought shelter one
night in a one-room cabin overflowing
with children. There was only one bed,
and much misgiving was felt on the
part of the travelers as to where they
should sleep. The mother undressed
the children one by one and laid them
in the bed, and as soon as they were
asleep she took them up without wak
ing them and laid them down on a big
pile of straw in the corner. When all
were quietly sleeping on the straw the
gentlemen were invited to take the bed.
Inwardly relieved, but outwardly pro
testing their regret at depriving their
hoata of their bed, the tired travelers
lay down and slept soundly until morn
ing. On waking, however, they found
themBelves on the straw beside the
children, while the mother and father
occupied the bed.

Dividends for Yeu.
This newspaper ia like a coupon bond
that carries dividends for you.
The coupons are the advertisements
which offer you opportunities.
You do not, in a literal sense, have
to do any clipping. All you have to do
is to read and keep yourself posted,
take what you want, and leave the
rest.
Reading the advertisementa commits
you to nothing. It merely tells you
what is being offered.
When you buy you naturally want to
get your money’s worth. You want to
buy the thing that will serve you best,
and you want to pay the lowest market
price.
The advertisementa spread before
you each week the business news.
They are part of the service you pay
for when you buy this newspaper.
You are not getting the full worth
out of your newspaper unless you keep
posted on what it has to say in its ad
vertising columns.
Incidentally, some of the advertise
ments are so well illustrated and writ
ten that they are better reading than
tho newa.
"A good name is rather to be chosen
than great riches." Don’t be spiteful
or mean, if you can help it. Don’t
consider it your duty to be a common
carrier for any sort of scandal. Don’t
trifle with those you love, nor tread on
the heart of a friend. Don’t think
evil even of those you do not like; the
world is wide enough for all; leave
them alone. Don't try to pull -down
those above you, but alwaya seek to
lift those beneath you to your own
level. Don't make yourself disagreea
ble to anyone. Don’t yield servile sub
mission to tobacco, whiskey, or any
other degrading habit, but have man
hood and womanhood enough to be de
cent and wholesome, and masters of
your own bodies. Don’t be suspicious
of others who are just as good as you
are, and perhaps a little better.

Resolutions of Respect by Ebenezer
Baptist Church.
The Supreme Ruler has, in His infi

our oldest and moat beloved sisters,
Mrs. G. W. Lewis. She was 89 years
of age. She was, before her marriage,
Mary Jane Chandler. She died Oct. 17,
1913. Her life influence and example
were an inspiration to all who knew
her. “The silver chord is loosened,”
and she hBS passed into the presence of
her Lord. Her suffering is over and she
rejoices evermore. She was a faithful
and consecrated Christian. May her
prayers and good example live long to
bless her children and grandchildrer.
Therefore, be it resolved—

to the will of Him who doeth all things
well.
2. That we extend our heartfelt Bym-

“What were you and Mr. Smith talk
ing about in the parlor?” aBked her
mother.
"Oh, we were discussing our kith and

The mother looked dubiously at her
daughter, whereupon her little brother,
wishing to help his sister, said:
"Yeth they wath, mother; I heard
’em. Mr. Thmith asked her for a kith
and she thaid, ‘You kin.’ ”

"How much?” asked his skeptical

“Two pints.”

The maid smiled brightly. “Oh, yes,

Miss Blank that I was here?” he asked
impatiently.
“No, sir,” answerod the new maid.
"Miss Blank hasn’t got back from shop

“But you told me she was in!”
“YeB, sir. She told me positively
that she was always at home to you,
