Loss of Nitrogen From Manure
Spread On Land.
Thr i'rojrrmuiive Farm nr.
A Mississippi reader want* to know
“how much nitrogen is lost when stable
manure is allowed to lie on the top of
the land and dry out?”
There is probably not much losa of
nitrogen into the air. In fact, the loss
is practically nothing, unless the ma
nure ib in aciive fermentation and
there is much amnonin in it when applied.
In dry weather, fermentation quickly
stops on account of the drying of the
manure and no further loss takes place.
In wet weather, the soluble nitrogen
goes into the soil and some may be lost
by leaching, if there is nogrowing crop
on the land, although no more and prob
ably not so much as would have been lost
had the manure been plowed into the
soil. It the land is such as to favor
washing or erosion, some of the soil and
manure may be kmt in that way, and
probably more manure than would be
loBt if it had been plowed under.
There is another loss which may be
greater than all others, which is gener
ally overlooker). When the manure is
plowed under freBh, it rots more quickly
than does dried manure from which
much of the nitrogen has leached into
the Boil, even though this nitrogen isnot
lost, That is, when the soluble nitro
gen is leached from the manure, the re
maining matter decays more slowly,
when it is finally plowed under, be
cause the soluble nitrogen in the fresh
manure aids in the decay of the insolu
ble material.
One of the chief benefits derived
from stable manure is the effect its
decomposition products exert in dis
solving the insoluble phosphoric acid
and potash in the soil. This effect is
increased when the freBh manure is
turned under and decays more rapidly.
On the whole, however, there is not
much greater loss of nitrogen and only
slightly greater loss in chemical and
mechanical effect on the soil when the
manure is left on the aurfuce for a
time, than when plowed under fresh.
Indeed, if there is a growing crop on
the land there will probably be less loss
of nitrogen, because the nitrogen that
is tsken up by the rootB of the growing
crop that might otherwise have been
lost by leaching, is probably much
greater than that which passes into the
air, and the beneficial action of the
mulch formed by the manure may more
than balance any loss resulting from
its slower decomposition and lessened
action on the insoluble phosphoric acid
and potash in the soil.
The influence of family worship is
great, silent, irresistible, and perma

happiness, removes family friction, and
causes all wheels of the homo machin

It promotes union and harmony, ex

and makes home intercourse holy

hushes the voice of recrimination, and
exerts n softening and harmonizing in
fluence over each heart. The dew of

DODSON’S GUARANTEE
EXPLAINED BY DODSON
Read What Dodson Says About His
Liver Tone to You Who Suffer
From Coustlpation.
“Dodson’s Liver Tone takes the place
of calomel. Instead of being danger
ous, it is harmless and works easily and
naturally, without bad after-effects. 1

Co. to refund purchase price (50c.) iu

Dodson's Liver Tone cun’t help you, I

That's how Dodson feels about this
plessant-tasting vegetable-liquid liver
regulator and reliever of constipation
and biliousness.

thought it might be a pleasant surprise
for you to get a letter of the other sort
for a change from the eternal whine.”
Thus runs a recent letter to the edi
tor from a subscriber who ought to
have a front, seat in heaven.
Do you want to know how it made ub
feel? Like a boy with his first pair of
galluses, or a maiden with her first
sweetheart. The sky had been murky,
toothache had run us wild for a week,
but it seemed as if the sun had sudden
ly burst through, flooding the earth
with glory.
So shines a kind word in a naughty
world.
Then we thought of the millions of
walking grouches who go through life
radiating discomfort upon their fellow-
workers, and we wondered what would
be the effect if, on a given day, at a
set hour, every one of them could be
converted into a glad-hand jollier!
Kind words are really very cheap—
we don’t know of a thing that’s cheap
er, and at the Bime time more valua
ble. They simply reflect a habit of
mind.
Why not get the habit?

dients and effects.
It is generally known that calomel,
being a poison, is a peril to many. It
stays in the system, and while it may
seem to give you a temporary relief,
often “knocks you out” for several
days.
With Dodson's Liver Tone you are set
right without ache or gripe ami with
no bad results to interfere in the slight
est way with your regular occupation
ami habits. So great a number of for
mer sufferers from constipation ami in
active liver have been vastly benefited
by Dodson's Liver Tone that it would
seem wise for you to give it a trial now.
Children like it and it does wonders for
them.

When one of our woman customers
recently bought five bottles of Harmo
ny Hair Beautitier to give her friends
for ChriBtmas, Bhe started all by her
self a mighty big advertising campaign,
because not only does each one of the
women to whom sho gave a bottle of
the Beautifier now consider it indispen
sable for the proper care of the hair,
but each of them has been the means
of getting several of her friends to use
it. As a consequence, if things keep on
in this way for a few months longer,
we will be selling more of it than all
other hair preparations combined.
Sprinkle a little Harmony Hair Beauti-
fier on your hair each time before brush
ing it. Contains no oil; will not change
color of hair, nor darken gray hair.
To keep hair and scalp dandruff-free
and clean, use Harmony Shampoo. This
pure liquid shampoo gives an instanta
neous rich lather that immediately pen
etrates to every part of the hair and
scalp, insuring a quick, thorough cleans
ing. WHHhed off just as quickly, the en
tire operation takes only a few mo
ments. Contains nothing that can harm
the hair; leaves no harshness or sticki
ness—just a sweet cleanliness.
Both preparations come in odd-shaped,
very ornamental bottles, with sprinkler
tops. Harmony Hair Beautitier, $1;

A church house in a certain rural dis
trict was Badly in need of repairs. The
official board had a called meeting of
the parishioners to see what could be
done toward raising the necessary funds.
One of the wealthiest and stingiest of
tile adherents of the church arose and
said that he would give five dollars, snd
sat down.
Just then a bit of plastering fell from
the ceiling and hit him squarely on the
head. Whereupon he jumped up, look
ed confused and said: “I—er—I meant
I'll give fifty dollars!” then again re
sumed his seat.
After a brief silence a voice was
heard to say: "O Lord, hit 'im again!”

Lack of Confidence.
Genriqi Harvey. In North Arm-ricmn Review.
it is not lack of money that makes
for the existing depression in business;
it is lack of confidence. Nothing could
be more fallacious than the notion
which apparently possesses this admin
istration that expansion of credits is the
sole requisite of commercial activities.
The real essential is a market. Pru
dent manufacturers do not borrow mon
ey, even when they can obtain it upon
easy terms, for the sake of paying in
terest; they seek it only when they can
use it to advantage in providing goods
that can be sold promptly and profita
bly.
The President himself is convinced
that prompt passage of the currency
bill will start the wheels of industry
a-whirling. s We doubt it for many
reasons, not the least of which is that
the sole basis upon which he reBts his
sanguine anticipation is that it is only
necessary “to set credit free from ar
bitrary and artificial restraints.” That
is a desirable thing to do, no doubt,
and certain ultimately to prove ad
vantageous. But radical revolution of
a delicate and complex financial system
cannot be encompassed so completely
as to produce marked benefits in a
month or perhaps in a year.
BELTED AND COATLESS.
IT’S A MISTAKE
Made by Many Newnan Residents
Many people in a misguided effort to
get rid of kidney backache, rely on
plasters, liniments and other make
shifts. The right treatment is kidney
treatment and a remarkably recom
mended kidney medicine is Doan’s
Kidney Pills. Newnan is no exception.
The proof is at your very door. The
following is an experience typical of
the work of Doan’s Kidney Pilla in
Newnan.
H. W. Jennings, 78 Murray St., New
nan, Ga., says: “For several years I
was subject to attacks of kidney trouble,
coming on after I caught cold or ex
erted myself. At Buch times the kid
ney secretions were irregular in passage
and I had such acute pains that it was
hard for me to do any work that obliged
me to stoop. Since I learned of Doan’s
Kidney Pills, I have never failed to get
relief through their use.”

cents. Foster-Milburn Co., Buffalo,

States.

Little Alice was writing invitations
for her birthday party, and had been
instructed by her mother to write the
sentence, "Please bring no presents,”
at the bottom of each invitation.
The little guests arrived at the ap
pointed time, but each came with a gift
for the hostess.
Alice, upon being taken to task for
having forgotten the sentence, said:
“No, mamma, I put in every single
letter of that note—I only changed the
‘no’ the leaBt little bit. ”
The note read: “Please bring on
presents.”
A small negro boy went to a physi
cian to be treated for a painful sensa
tion in one of his ears. The doctor ex
amined and found the ear was full of
wuter.
“How did this happen?” he asked af
ter he had drained the ear; “been going
in swimming?”
"Naw, suh,” said the little fellow,
“been eatin’ watermelon!”
Harry: “You do look nice in that
frock, dear; but it cost me a heap of
money. ”
Mrs. Harry: “You dear old boy!
What do I care for money when it’s a
question of pleasing you?”
"How do you pronounce Huerta’s
name?”
“It is a little uncertain, but I don’t
think it will be very long before it is
pronounced Dennis.”
“They tell me you love good music,”
said the lady, playing at the piano, to
her musical friend.
"Oh,” said the polite friend, “that
doesn’t matter. Pray go right on.”
It isn’t necessary for a man to have
money to burn in order to keep the pot
boiling.
The only reason some people want a
finger in the pie is to keep other people
from eating it.
If men were as perfect as thefr wives
expect them to be the monotony of
married life would be debilitating.
The art of pretending is not confined
to regular actors.
Every mother knows that her son
ought to marry a princess.
A man who makes a bluff at hustling
succeeds in making others tired.
It is hard to get an argument out of
a man whose stomach is well filled.
