HIU.V SUNDAY ON SALOONS,
The saloon rota everything it touches;
it hasn’t got a leg to stand on.
Talk about the high coat of living;
the saloon is causing it.
The saloon ought to be in hell, and if
I can put it there I’ll do it.
The snloon comes as near being a
rat-hole fora workingman to dump his
wngeB into as any place this side of
hell.
The saloon at heart iB a damnable out
law.
Booze will give you a free pass to
hell when you die.
The Baloon wraps a muntle of crepe
about every hope in this world and the
world to come.
The saloon is the source of three-
fourths of all crime—hence it is the
cause of three-fourths of taxation.
I will make nny sacrifice if 1 can put
the damnable business in hell.
The thiof simply robs you of your
money, but the saloon robs you of your
soul.
I think when I die the brewers will
run an excursion to my funeral.
I pray God to let me live long enough
to preach the funeral sermon of the
whiskey business.
itegulate the saloon by high license!
You might as well try to regulate a
powder mill in hell.
The Baloon is the best friend hell and
the devil has got on earth.
The saloon is the world’s anarchist
and her old red flag is dyed with the
blood of men, women and children.
The aaloun always is in partnership
with the foes of good government
The saloon exists because the church
supporta it and votes for it.
Liquor costs more than hooka at
Harvard, according to the 1913 esti
mate of the “Harvard University
Register," published by the student
council. The ligures Rhow that more
than $1,500,0(1(1 is spent annually by Har
vard students for necessaries and luxu
ries over and above board, room, and tui
tion. The bill for smokes is estimated
at $93,225, and drinks cost $73,500, or
over $2,000 morethun is paid for books.
Theater tickets, suppers after the
show, and taxi fares amount to more
than $200,000; $000,000 is spent for
clothing. Judging from this report,
not all Harvard students have realized
the truth of ex-I’resident Elliot’s state
ment, "If a raun be leading an intellec
tual life, if he be engaged in work
which interests him keenly, stirs him,
and requires the nctive uro of his pow
ers of thought, then he will invariutdy
feel the retarding and deteriorating
effect of alcohol."
Seventy-flvo thousand students are
reached directly every year by the Held
secretaries of the Intercollegiate Pro
hibition Association, and are told of the
prohibition cause und its claims upon
them for service.
"For the capital invested, liquor em
ploys fewer wuge-earners, pays leas
for wages, a smaller share of the pro
duct goes to labor, and a smaller market
furnished to the farmer, than in any
other business in the United States,”
was the conclusion of a lecture in the
School of Education of the University
of California.
Believing the popular idea that the
Germans uro not in sympathy with the
temperance movement, the students at
Tabor College, Kansas, who are almost
all Germans, have « strong prohibition
league studying the question arid look
ing for opportunity for anti-saloon
work.
"Young college men and women, the
responsibility is upon you to join your
united elforts in this struggle against
the liquor traffic. Your generation
must solve the problem. 1 envy you
your opportunity." —Ex-Gov. Hanly of
Indiana, before a State convention of
college students. J
An aggressive, systematic campaign
to Recure the signBtnre of college stu
dents to petitions urging Congress to
pass the Hobson prohibition amend
ment to the National Constitution has
just been launched by the Intercolle
giate Prohibition Associatiov. It is ex
pected that from 60,000 to 100,0(10 sig
natures will be secured and presented
to the National Legislature.
An "Anti-Prohibition League" is the
Intest reported organization at the
University of Washington, formed as
a counter-balance to the aggressive
work of the "Prohibition League"
there. And the "Antis" couldn’t do
anything that would help the Prohibi
tion Club more than such a move.
State School System Primitive
and Inefficient.
Miss Constance Schley, a graduate of
the Georgia Normal School and an
authority on educational matters, rather
severely arraigns the common school
system of Georgia in a recent state
ment, and what she Bays, while it wil|
not be agreed to in all quarters, never-
the less will command respect generally.
There are a good many people who
realize that there is much truth in
what she says.
In part, Miss Schley says;
“Almost the first indication that a
people manifests of awakening interest
in children is their willingness to tax
themselves locally and liberally for bet
ter Bchools, better school-houses, better
teachers and better teaching.
The school of permanent influence
is dependent upon local pride, local in
itiative, local self-sacrifice and local
tax in behalf of good schools, and the
problem can bo solved in no other way.
"Only two States in the Union at
tempt to Bolve the common-school prob
lem with great lump sums appropriated
out of the State Treasury. Mississippi
is one and Georgia is the other; and
the rank of these two States in the
column of illiteracy is forty-fifth and
forty-sixth. During the last twenty
years the common-Bchoo) appropriation
of Georgia has been nearly quadrupled,
but Georgia's place in the illiteracy
column remains exactly the same!
“Ours is a mistaken policy. Nothing
is clearer than this. The common-
school problem can not be solved in
this way. It never was Bolved this
way in any State of the Union.
"Local taxation for schools has be
gun in Georgia and local school systems
are. multiplying, but our reliance is
still mainly upon legislative appropria
tions.
“The policy is futile and foolish, and
this ought to be said bravely and con
vincingly in every community in Geor
gia.
"Wo shall never have country schools
of permanent influence without the
local pride that is equal to a local school
tax. Tweny-nine counties of the
State have county-wide local-tax school
systems. There ought to be 148 such
counties in Georgia, all of them under
adequate, efficient supervision.”
A Real Nerve and Body-Build
ing Medicine.
Wo believe Rexall Olive Oil Emulsion
is the bfst reme dy made for toning the
nerves, enriching the blood, building up
wasted tissues, renewing health,
strength und energy- the best medi

down, tired-out, nervous und debilita
ted, no matter what the cause. It
doesn’t depend for its good effect upon
alcohol or habit-forming drugs, because
it contains none. It may not make you

it contains huve a chance to get into
the blood and, throu h the blood, into

bined into one preparation which, as a
nerve-food and a builder of strength
und health, we believe has no equal.
If you don't feel well, begin taking
Rexall Olive Oil Emulsion to-day, and
build your health and strengthen your
system against more serious illness.
To convalescents, old people, puny chil
dren und all others who are weak, run

When We Are Old.
Cleburne (Tex.) Enterprise.
When we are old what will be our
fate? I see many old men and women
tottering on the edge of the grave,
their eyes blurred by the flight of time,
their steps slowed by the infirmities of
age. It ia quite natural for me, ac
customed to meditation, to wonder,
when I grow old—“Will I be tenderly
cared for and loved for the thingB that
I did while 1 had strength to do them?
—will 1 be loved for the deeds of my
stronger days, or will I be regarded
as old, useless, only in the way?” It
seems that this generation is one that
doeB not pay the respect and homage to
age that it Bhould. Instead of giving
old people the best we have, we, in the
selfishness of our youth, take for our
selves the best of everything and give
our aged only the things that are left—
often only the bare husks. The time
will come, in spite of what we may do
or wish, when we too will feel the chill
of age creep into our veins, and our
dim old eyes will look opt upon a fast-
vanishing world.
If we forget what our loved ones did
for us, the agony that our mothers
suffered that we might see the light of
day, the long hours of toil that father
endured that we might have an educa
tion and become useful men and
women, and when they grow old cast
them aside, we may expect to step into
the Bhadow-land unhonored and un
loved. The aged are entitled to our
highest honors. They should be placed
upon a pedestal above the crowds of
clamoring youth, and their progress
and achievements in the days long gone
heralded and sung.
No matter how young we may be,
how fast the rich red blood courses
through our veins, the shadows are
creeping toward us, and it is only a
question of time until we will be
groping about, waiting for the sum
mons that comes to all.
Let’s take our loved ones by the hand
when they grow old, and make them
feel that we have not forgotten their
prowess, their deeds of valor, their
sacrificial hours, their tender solicittude
and their prodigal affection.

THE TEST THAT TELLS
CONSTIPATION MAY
CAUSE APPENDICITIS.
It PayB to Be Watchful and Careful.
Dodson's Liver Tone is Recom
mended and Guaranteed.
In a number of cases it has seemed
that appendicitis has resulted from
chronic constipation. Hence it is well
to be careful and keep the system in as
good working order as possible, for if
you never suffer from constipation you
are likely to lessen your liability to oth
er complications and troubles.
But that does not mean that it is wise
for you to use calomel, a poison that
stays in the system and often leaves
baa effects behind it, even after you
may have appeared to be benefited
temporarily. As a matter of fact, cal
omel is exceedingly dangerous to many
people, perhaps to you. So it is just as
well not to take any chances.
For constipation, biliousness, liver
complaint, sick headache, etc., Dodson’s
Liver Tone is guaranteed by John R.
Gates Drug Co., who will cheerfully re
fund purchase price (60c.) instantly to
you in the event that it fails to give
complete satisfaction.
Dodson’s Liver Tone is a vegetable
liquid, perfectly harmless, easy to take
and highly effective without pain, ache
or gripe and leaving no bad after-ef
fects. It assists nature and builds up
instead of weakening you. So many
people have been immensely benefited
by this good remedy that it is worth
looking into at once. Make no mistake
—ask for Dodson’s Liver Tone.
This is the task appointed: To hold
the vision of a final arrival at some
fitting destination; to maintain undi
minished a sense of personal worthi
ness; to be defeated in each foolish
dream of the younger life, and so to be
disciplined into a larger vision, made
more sure by adversity; to he delayed
for most qf a lifetime, and yet to be
lieve in strength of human spirit to
surmount pain, outlive sin and defeat
malice and envy; to believe in the
gradual but all-conquering power of
good will; to be saddened but not em
bittered; to be beaten but not conquer
ed. That is the stern business set be
fore us.
Is the Test of Time. Many Newnan
People Have Made This Test.
YearB ago this Newnan citizen told
in a public statement the benefit de
rived from Doan’s Kidney Pills. The
statement is now confirmed—the testi
mony complete. Instances like this
are numerous. They doubly prove the
merit of Doan’s Kidney Pills. Can
any Newnan reader demand more con
vincing proof? It’s Newnan testimony
—it may be investigated.
W. T. Lazenby, 64 Wesley St., New
nan, Ga., says; “The secretions from
my kidneys passed too frequently and
I suffered from my back. I tried many
remedies, but they all failed to help
me until I got Doan’s Kidney Pills
from the Lee Drug Co. One box of
this remedy relieved me. My opinion
of Doan’s Kidney Pills is just aB high
to-day as it was some years ago, when
I indorsed them. I have not been both
ered by kidney complaint since.”

It was raining hard one Sunday, and
the little boy asked his mother if they

“No, not to-day,” sheanswered, “it's

"Well, mamma,” Baid the little Puri

The mother immediately made prepa

“Why. Willie,” said the Sunday-school
teacher in a pained voice, “have you
been fighting again? Didn’t you learn

“Yes’m,” agreed Willie; “but he hit

Systematic, honest, extensive adver

the mail order houses, Gov. Hodges
told the business men of Kansas City a
few days ago at a meeting there. And
he laid down a rule that if every mer
chant would spend as much, in propor
tion, of his profits in honest advertising
as the mail order houses do, they would
have little trouble with the mail order
business. “Advertise extensively, and
then live up to the advertising,” the
Governor said, “and you will not be
troubled with mail order houses. You

want. Tell them about them.”
