the itinerant farm eh.
In compiling data for the last Feder-
iil Census the enumerators asked every
farmer in Georgia this question: ‘Tlnw
long have you liveil on the farm you
now occupy?" This question was
answered 264,805 of the 2111,017 farm
operators in this State. More than
108,000 stated that they had occupied
their farms only one year or less;
71,224 from 2 to 4 years; 30,918 from
r, to 9 years and 48,704 10 years and
over. The most restless class of peo
ple in this Slate is the tenant who
operates his farm on the share basis.
An official of the Census Bureau, dis
cussing this question, said:
"This frequency of moving from
farm to farm, or instability of occu
pancy, forms one of the chief causes
for the decline of rural prosperity, and
is a hindrance to greater progress.
Frequency of removal of farmers re
sults in general shiftlessness; the roads
and bridges are generally in |ioor con
dition, because the farmers, moving at
frequent periods, arc not particularly
interested in their upkeep. Farm
buildings are not usually kept in good
repair, as the farmer who is about to
move will leave the repairs for the
next tenant to make. The same rea
sons will apply for the lack of interest in
the schools, churches and general wel
fare of the community. They move
frequently; they do not remain on the
farm long enough to get the best re
sults from it; consequently, they arc
usually in a poor financial condition."
HON. n. F. Me fair; HUN AC
CEPTS NOMINATION.
At the recent convention at Fairburn
which nominated Hon. B. F. McLaugh
lin, of Meriwether, for Slate Senator
for the Thirty-sixth district, J. T.
Longino, of Campbell, John T. Dun
can, of Douglas, W. It. Jones, of Meri
wether, and Jas. II. Brown, of Cow
eta, were appointed a committee to
notify Mr. McLaughlin of the action of
the convention and to urge his accept
ance of the party's nomination for the
office named. Replying to this notifi
cation, Mr. McLaughlin lias addressed
the committee as follows
"Greenville, Ga., Oct. (!, 1911
"Messrs. .1. T. Longino, John T.
Duncan, W. It. Jones and James E.
Brown Gentlemen: I beg to ac
knowledge the notice of my unanimous
nomination for State Senator from the
Thirty-sixth Senatorial district, at a
convention held at Fairburn, Ga.,
Sept. 30, 1911. I tender to you, und
through you to the people of the Thir
ty-sixth Senatorial district, my sincere
thanks for the confidence reposed in
me, and in accepting the nomination I
pledge my best efforts in behalf of the
interests of the State.
"1 tender to you ami to the conven
tion my sincere thanks also for the
confidence you repose in me by your
very kind resolution indorsing me for
I'resiilent of the next. Senate.
"I regret very much that urgent
business prevented mo from being
present at the convention to express
my appreciation in person.
“Yours very truly,
“B. F. McLaughlin.”
Why iH it that such a small amount
of American cofton is being shipped to
England when trade with that country
remains uninterrupted, is a question
which Savannah cotton men are being
called upon to answer, says the Morn
ing News of that city. Many cunnot
understand why England should not he
taking a large quantity of cotton from
the United States, considering the fact
that the F.nglish mills are running and
ships continue to ply between American
ami English ports. In explanation of
this an exporter of Savannah says:
“England had about 700,000 bales of
cotton on hand when the war broke
out. It is taking them some time to
spin that. The mills nre running from
•40 to 00 per cent, capacity, the curtail
ment of operations being due to the fact
that there is not the usual demand for
the finished goods."
It looks now as if the Thirty-sixth
Senatorial district will have the honor
of furnishing the I'resiilent of the next
State Senate. Hon. B. F. McLaughlin,
who was nominated for State Senator
at Fairburn the other day, is aspiring
to the position, and with Mattering
prospeets of success, lie possesses all
the qualifications requisite as presiding
officer of the State's most dignified de
liberative body, and his elevation to
that post of honor would he very grati
fying to his many friends anil admirers.
An able lawyer, a veteran legislator,
and a courteous, high-minded gentle
man with it all. he would graoe the po
sition us few men could do.
The “Bull Moose" party held a con
vention in Macon a few days ago and
nominated C. W. McClure, of Atlanta,
to op[H)se Hon. Hoke Smith for the
ling-term l'. S. Seimtorship in the
general election on Nov. Col. Kufe
Hutchens, of Rome, was selected to
run against Hun. Tlios. W. Hardwick
for the short term. McClure and
Hutchens have about as much show ing
for election as a jaybird would have in
•a cat fight, and by Nov. I they will be
sorry they ever heard of the Bull Moose
P»rty.
Georgia has 291,027 farms. Of this
number 100,047 are operated by owners
and managers and 190,980 by tenants.
Thirty-four per cent of the farms of
this State ate operated by owners and
managers and 66 per cent, by tenants.
'1 he farm home-owners and managers
cultivate 5,179,645 acres of land, and
the tenants till 7,118,372 acres. The
value of the land and buildings of the
tenant farms is $221,929,000; that of
the home owners and managers is
$2o7,27<J,000.
According to a Government report is
sued on Friday last the indications are
that the present cotton crop will reach
15,300,000 bales, being exceeded only
by the crop of 1911, when the total
yield was 15,693,000 hales. Up to Sept.
25, 3,381,863 hales had been ginned, be
ing only 4,000 less than was ginned up
to the same date in 1911. Not much
encouragement in these figures to hope
for ten cents for cotton, even if the
war in Europe should end to-day more
is the pity.
France makes nearly twenty-six mil
lion pairs of gloves yearly and of these
18,000,000 pairs arp exported.
