PINSON KILLED BY TAYLOR PRUITT. Sensational Shooting Occurred in this City Saturday Night. A sensational shooting occurred i in Newnan last Saturday night, i which resulted in the death of Joe ' Will Pinson, a young man well known in the city. I ■’ The tragedy occurred in the j (astern part of the city, in the see- I tion inhabited principally by | negroes. Pruitt and two friends, young men named Montgomery land Holton, met Pinson. All of them were drinking, it is said, and j a quarrel ensued. The story of the difficulty, as told by Pinson after the shooting, was substan tially as follows: He stated that Pruitt had a pis- i tol and that he picked up an ax at ju negro house, near which the tragedy occurred. Ile t c)aimcd to : have made no effort to strike Pruitt with the ax, and at the time of the shooting was standing ,'}() or 40 feet from the latter, leaning on the ax. Words were still being exchanged when one of the young men with Pruitt exclaimed, “Shoot him!” Pruitt immediately fired, the ball piercing Pinson’s bowels. Pruitt and his friends immedi ately left the scene of the shooting, and Pinson crawled to a negro house nearby. Pinson’s statement, as given al>ove, was made to these gentle men immediately after they reach ed him. Pinson was brought up into the city—lirst to Peniston’s drug store —and later was carried to the Davis and Turner Sanatorium, where he died Sunday night. He- fore his death he made another statement in reference to his dif ficulty with Pruitt, but this state ment has not lieen made public. Joe Will Pinson was a son of the late Judson Pinson and was 26 years old. lie is survived by his mother and several brothers and sisters. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon at his mother’s residence and was conducted oy Dr. («. A. Nuunally. The inter ment was in the city cemetery.
