Sensational Shooting
Occurred in this City
Saturday Night.
A sensational shooting occurred
i in Newnan last Saturday night,
i which resulted in the death of Joe
' Will Pinson, a young man well
known in the city.
I ■’
The tragedy occurred in the
j (astern part of the city, in the see-
I tion inhabited principally by
| negroes. Pruitt and two friends,
young men named Montgomery
land Holton, met Pinson. All of
them were drinking, it is said, and
j a quarrel ensued. The story of
the difficulty, as told by Pinson
after the shooting, was substan
tially as follows:
He stated that Pruitt had a pis-
i tol and that he picked up an ax at
ju negro house, near which the
tragedy occurred. Ile t c)aimcd to
: have made no effort to strike
Pruitt with the ax, and at the time
of the shooting was standing ,'}() or
40 feet from the latter, leaning on
the ax. Words were still being
exchanged when one of the young
men with Pruitt exclaimed, “Shoot
him!” Pruitt immediately fired,
the ball piercing Pinson’s bowels.
Pruitt and his friends immedi
ately left the scene of the shooting,
and Pinson crawled to a negro
house nearby. A physician was
called—Dr. Paul Peniston respond
ed and was the first white man,
accompanied by Hen Hill Pinson
