God help us to follow the teaching of this great man of God! He needs no monument beyond his life and doctrine. Theodore Beza, from intimate knowledge, wrote of him: “Having been an observer of Cal vin’s life for sixteen years, I may with perfect right testify that we have in this man a most beautiful example of a Christian life and death, which it is easy to defame, but difficult to imitate.” The sceptical Ernest Renan designated him as "the most Christian man of his generation,” and declared— "Paul begat Augustine, and Au gustine begat Calvin.” While Prof. Dorner estimates that "Cal vin was equally great in intellect and character, lovely in social life, full of tender sympathy and faith fulness to friends, yielding and forgiving towards personal of fences, but inexorably severe when he saw the honor of God obstinate ly and malignantly attacked.” As another puts it, "Calvin was firm, but he was modest; he was brave, but he was also gentle. He was refined, devout, spiritual, loving among his family and friends. But he was intolerant of iniquity. The truth is, Calvin hated sin, and that is the reason the world hated Calvin,” "While Luther was contending with tyranny and superstition in Germany, Calvin was doing a no less important work in the little republic of Geneva, Luther was breaking down a system; Calvin was building up one. The Ger man Reformer was a destructive genius; Calvin was constructive. Luther was God’s sledge-hammer to crush indulgence-selling, the worship of images and saints, the j oppression of the people by the priesthood, the doctrines of purga tory, the mass, and the infallibility |of the pope; but he never con- : structe.d in place of these a very i complete and logical system of theology or church government. Luther filled the largest place, in the world’s eye, of any man of his day; but Calvin’s influence has been more powerful, and has travelled further than that of any man of modern times. The reason is, that Calvin constructed a theol ogy and a government which have challenged the admiration and It is but the inflashing upon the conscience of the laws by which mankind are governed—laws which exist whether we acknwledge them or deny them, and will have their way to our own weal or woe ac cording to the attitude in which we place ourselves toward them; inherent, like the laws of gravity, in the nature of things; not made by us, not to be altered by us, but to be discerned by us and obeyed 1 by us at our everlasting peril.” And Ranke avers, "John Calvin was virtually the founder of America.” From the grave of this saint we went to the Rue (Street) Calvin and house number 13, standing on the place of Calvin’s dwelling, where he died bearing a memorial stone tablet with the words: “Jean Calvin vient ici de MOXLIII a MDLXIV, annee de sa mort. La maison qu’il habitat fut demolie en 1706 et remplacie par l’im- meublc actuel.” On the door- front is the sign "Bureau Techni que due neuvecachatindela ville," It is a nice three-story stone build ing. Thence we went to the (Protestant) Cathedral of St. Peter (St. Pierre), in which Cal vin preached and prominent of situation. We were just in time for the morning service (10 to n: 15 a. m.), at which a wide awake minister officiated, with a good strong voice and waxing eloquent with intense earnestness. The service was in French throughout, and the building was thronged, 34 being received into membership; and immediately on the close of the services a number of children were baptized by sprinkling, each parent being duly charged as to their responsibilities, and after the ceremony each father was taken by the hand with a solemn and affectionate injunction. We saw the pulpit of Calvin and some fine monumental work in the building, and from the steeple-top (reached by 156 steps) had a panoramic view of great beauty. Not far away were to be seen the birth place of Rousseau, and the Old Arsenal. Those who will may find both English and American churches in the city.
