THE SOCIAL SEASON.
The tang of midwinter air always
seems to put. tho'hick into thoHo social
pleasures that languish during summer,
anil this season of tho yonr sees many
jolly gatherings in homos nnd public
halls. Social lifo is a groat gnmo, nnd
you would hardly know a lot of pooplo
while thoy are under .tho Hpoll of its
transformations.
Soino folks who nro sour nnd rusty
in their homo surroundings will blosBOin
out with spnrklo and high spirits at a
social occasion. In tho family circle thoy
may answer tho homo people with a surly
grunt j but take thorn to an evening
party, particularly if porsons of the op
posite sex are present whom they wish
to please, and thoy display brilliant con
versational powers. Their vivacity sur
prises those who know their grumpy ways
at homo.
Boys who were too tired to bring in
some wood and kindle up the kitehefi
lire will travel many miles learning tho
now danc.o steps. Girls whoso licailB
ached over tlielr Latin, limy he able to
remember long sequences of cards at tho
bridge' table without apparent effort.
The normal deBiro of tho two sexes
for a meeting placo is tho mysterious
stimulant that accounts for many changes
in. temper.
' The 1 fault of social life is that its
favors are unevenly distributed. Tho
popular girl with her pretty fuco and
agile tongue gets so many invitations
that she may spoil her youth with late
hours aiul frivolous ideas. Meanwhile
many quiet and reserved young people,
who need social attrition to bring out
their lino powers, miss tl|o elinnco for
self-development that wholesome society
should givo to all.
