Tun widow of cx-President Polk
comploted her 80tb year on the 4th
in?t., aud was pleasantly surprised
on that day by a visit from many of
the pronunet citizons of NasLville,
Ti mi., where she lives, who brought
some Guo iloral tokens of tho oveut.
Tue following gentlemon have been
appointed by Governor McDaniel as
commissioners to superintend the
building of tbo now capitol : Gen’,
E P. Alexander, of Augusta ; B. C.
Cruno, of Atlanta ; A. L. Miller, of
Perry ; John Scroven, of Savannah ;
and W. W. Thomas, of Athens. Nona
of the appointees were applicants for
tho position.
Considehabj.e excitement lms been
created in Hie State by a report that
Jay Gculd had bought tho Louis
ville & Nashville Railroad and ol)
tainod a cohtrollisg interest in the
Georgia Central. It is not likely
that tho Central has passed into his
control us the stock is owned by so
many different persons that it is not
ensy to gobble it up without creating
unusual excitement which has not
been done and tho offiuors of the
road deny the report.
IiCtt of From Perry.
Fanny, Ga., Sept. 10:li; 1883.
Mn. Editok —Allow mo to congrat¬
ulate you on your accession to your
now Kingdom. Yon are indeed scat
cd ou a throne of power. In this
fl'oo country tho proaa wield* an
appreciated influence. To it all
turn. Public opinion is formed, and
directed by it ; errors corrected ;
wrongs exposod ; tho strong arc re
sGuinod, and tho weak protected.
May jour reign bo Jong and prosper¬
ous. You hnvo a noblu const it ucn
cy. They will sustain you in all your
efforts to elovato and improve tK
limiplo. l’ut j’otir papor into every
family in Stewart county and wi ll
hearty cooperation botwcou you,there
is a bright future ahead.
I am sorry to report tho people of
this fine old county of Houston very
much discouraged. Two little words
tell the whole story.
Drouth and worms. A farmer said
to mo to-day that all crops woro off
this year. In this county corn is
the best crop made and that is only
medium. Cotton is put down at not
more than half.
I find n strong fooling hero to di¬
versify agriculture morn than over.
Very large small grain crops will bo
put in this fall. Watermelons and
truck are rAcieving increasing atten¬
tion ; and n groat many farmers aro
preparing to raise their own colts,
both horses aud mules.
It seems to me the problem of
Georgia’s prosperity would be oasily
solvod if our people would raiso their
own stock, and bacon and fertilizers.
The drum on ns for tlioso imported
articles has kept us poor, and w ill so
continue till the crack of doom. I
bail tho prospect of a change with
patriotic prido.
This county has had a yoar’s expo
ricnco with the stock law. As far as
I coii learn it has given satisfaction.
One thing I hear which is surprising;
that l uitar is cheaper and of a but¬
ter grade tLan over known iu Perry,
I notico this people aro slow to
change from their old habits, but
when onco thoy break away from
faucet they never go back to them.
