Between eighty and ninety were in uttcndcnco and many more expect¬ ed, We wi.-h Prof. Glenn great suc¬ cess. He is highly educated, a splen¬ did gentleman and has a College equal to the best iu the state. Tlx Vaason Journal says of tho now school recently opened iu Dawson, “Frol. Lowrcy is meeting with fine success with his school. Already, ho has matriculated more than fifty pu¬ pils, with quite a good number ol oihers yet to enter. Prof. Lowrey is one of tho finest teachers in Georgia and ho is universally popular as auch by all who know him. Wherever a person has sent to echoed to him once they invariably want to send again”. Mr. Lowrey is a native of 'Stewart county, llo ia not only a fine teacher but a true gentleman. Ono thing cun bo said of him, how¬ ever strongly he may oppose an ene¬ my ho never went back on a friend. We wish tho stato of Georgia was lull of such mon as J. W. F. Lowrey. W. A. Juuan o4 Co., of Macon, have received full lines of fail and winter dry goods. Send fur samples, HAVE YOU A LADDER? Wo are now entering the fall and winter season when fires are ihoio frequent and a fow precautionary suggestions may not be out of order. Lurnpkm is arranged no that a fire company would bo of little service in or-so of firo. In tho first place the dwellings ni o scattered bo that it would be impracticable to have cis¬ terns enough to uecni ‘0 a full supply of water. In tho second place the town is too poor to indulge iri tho luxury of a fire company and water supply. As the public square is laid off and buildings erected, it makes ono shudder to oven think about a firo breaking out among the stores. They are ail wooden structures and being old and well seasoned, should a fire begin it would swoop away an entires range. Wo believe that tho host plan that tho piooplo can devise is to put a ladder upon cash dwelling and stores house iu the town and keep it there. Tho want of ladders has always been the principal draw back iu Lumpkin iu case of a fire. As Boon as an alarm is given our citizens respond with alacrity, each man carrying a bucket of water as he goes, and if the houses are pro¬ vided with ladders it will not bo a hard matter to extinguish a firo be¬ fore it gets under full headway. The ladders will cost but little and the suggestion is worthy ol the attention of property owners. A low condition ql health is com mon with many who ailew them¬ selves to worry. Mental anguish causes bodily sufferings. Anxiety and care has broken down many con¬ stitutions. A train of disorders usu¬ ally follow mental distress. Heart affections, nervousness, sleeplessness, dyspepsia, liver complaint, kidney troubles, etc., are among Lbo Hat. A sura remedy for relieving all msntal and physical distress is Brown’s Iron Bitters. It at once strengthens every part of tho' body making work a pleasure and care unknown. - ---- . Daniel Buie, Lustou, Gn., says : “Brown’s Iron Bitters relieved mo of severe suffering from dyspepsia.” LAID UP FOR REPAIRS ** Colbert Price drove quite pret¬ a ty pony to Lumpkin this week, which attracted tho admiration of the town boys when they saw it hitched up to a dog cart. Nothing would do but our aesthetic livery man and tho dry goode man on the corner should take a ride. Tho Lumpkin boys enjoyed the rido for a while but in an evil movement thoy attempted to cut a iignreS. Tho pony thought that ho was again in the circus ring and the time .had arrived for Lira to kick the clown’s wagon to pieces. His heels flew with the old time rapidity and with dangerous c-ffoct. The first effort struck our roiithotic young man on the knoo cap and sent him to grass* Tho dry goods man had just turned around to jump out when tho pony’s heels waro hurled backward for tho second tinio, Tho juinpor roceivad ouch an impetus that ho landed on tho ground suddenly and abruptly. Tho damages may bo repaired before frost, but it will tako several bottles of liuament and the half soling of a pail’ of pants to do it. Any of our boys can drive a stage horse, a mule or an ox, but they don’t hanker alter homos that have fought in battle nor thoso who hi years gone by per¬ . formed in the saw dust arena. Yea ter day one of the young men was hobbling around ou crutches, while for tho present the other takes Lis meals standing up. TO SUBSCRIBERS.
