—Starling, the five-year-old son of Mr.
and Mrs J. Lipsey, died at the residence ol

community in their sad bereavement.
— There is some talk of converting the va¬
cant lot back of M. M. & W. H. Griffis’
store into a free wagon yard, Snell a con

the public who come to town to trade, and
would repay the merchants handsomely on
the North side of the square for the expanse

—The Chattahoochee Mu.ical Conven¬
tion will convene at County Line Church,
in this County, on Thursday before the 3rd
Sabbath in October. Mr. Edwin T. Pound,
of Barnesville, will be in attendance, and
will be nccompai ied by Mr. George M.
Niles, a fine organist and curuct player, who
is highly appreciated in musical circles as a
fini performer, • n this occasion. Mr. Pound
will introduce his new hoik, ‘'Songs For
All..”
—The exorcises of the Pleasant Valley
Academy terminated last Friday. The ex¬
amination of tho classes by tho teacher. Mr.
E. W. Rodgers, was highly satisfactory
to the patrons of tha school. The exhibi¬
tion on Friday night was largely attended
and was pronounced quite a success, re¬
flecting credit upon teacher and pupils. The
hospitable citizens of the neighborhood
spread a bounteous repast at uoou and also
at night for the visitors.
—Several weeks ago mention was made
these columns of the attempt made to
arrest a negro, named Isham Banks, by
Bailiff Holder and the negro’s escape. The
Grand Jury found a true bill against Isham
at the last term of the Courtfor hog stealing
it was for this offense that he was
wall ted. During the early part of this week
the officers of Chattahoochee couuty got on
track of him and tried to arrest him when
made a stubborn resistance and it

could be captured. He is now lodged in
jail at Cusseta.

THREE NEGROES BREAS JAIL.
On Friday night last, just after dark,
three .negroes coufiued in the county - jail
succeedod in making their escape. They
were confined in a Cell that had bjen brok¬
en through on a former occasion and it was
through the patched par of the floor that
they worked out. In tho cells are iron
*ed 0 e« at out an inch and a halt long that
is used to fasten the sheet iron with. The
prisoners got two of these small wedges out
and^uied them as chisels, doing he driving
it is thought with the heols of their shoes.
After getting the flooring up It was an easy
mat er to kick off the ceiling on the room
below and drop through to (he d'.Vclli’ g
part ot the jail in which no une was living.
The escaped pri oners are Milton Flewetlen
aud Peter Barry, charged with assault with
intent to murder, and Walter Carter, charg
ed with assault and battery. The patched
place in the cell was supposed to be per
tactly Sheure and no possible blame can be
attached to the sheriff or jailer.
