On June 30 snow fell in the north¬

was dancing around 100 to 105 degrees
in the Eastern States. We have a great

Monday, July 4th, was celebrated

There are now two full tickets f or
county officers in this county, the
democratic arid the populist; and there
is talk of the republicans putting out
a set of candidates. However, the
election is a long time off yet, and the
average floating cuffee will have a fat
time in pioneering between the lines
and practicing the science of phleliot- '

Mr. Editor: —It has never been my
purpose to needlessly offend any one;
and it has never been my practice to
stab anyone in the dark or from the
rear. This much by way of introduc¬

‘oan article written by myself, which
was directed to “The Citizens of Lump
kin,” and contained some reference to
the office hours of t he marshals.
Now this was written with no sinis¬
ter motive and as a mere matter of
pleasantry. It is true that an idle, do
nothing time had come to pass with
the marshals, or at least largely so,
and I attribute this to their vigilance.
They had earned a place in shady

understand it, part of iny duties as
Mayor. Further than this 1 wish to
say that i am willing always to make
the “amende honorable” w henever of¬
fense is taken and no offense is intend¬

I hope this explanation will he per¬
fectly satisfactory, and yet it is tough
indeed, Mr. Editor, to apologize for an
old rehashed gag about policemen and
marshals that has been going the
rounds of the press for many years and
that too, in enlightened Lumpkin.

X". S. SXXTO-EX3’S-
t'ONGKKSSIONAI. CONVENTION.
There was a •. (invention of (Inlrifates
in Lumpkin on Thursday, July 7, from
the thirteen counties composing the
Third Congressional District of Geor¬
gia, for the purpose of nominating a
congressman from this same district,
with about thirty delegates. R.
Holtzclaw, of Houston, was chosen
presidingoillcer of the meeting, J. M.
Harrison of Montezuma, secretary.
Of course the business was only formal
and methodical as there was no other
candidate opposing the nomination ot
Hon. E. B. Lewis, our present repre¬
sentative in Congress. After the bus¬
iness features of the convention had
been harmoniously concluded, there
were several short addresses made to
the assembly, consisting of a fairly
go 7(1 audience from Lumpkin and oth¬
er points in the county. There was a
flavor of patriotism In the decoration
of the rostrum or speakers stand, there
being a dozen or more IT. S. flags taste¬
fully arranged, making an artistic dis¬
play, supplemented by a number of
vases of beautiful flowers, ferns, ever¬
greens, etc., which augmented the
scenic efl'eet.
Hon. E. B. Lewis was nominated by
acclamation, and on being notified, lie
appeared before the audience and was
greeted with enthusiastic applause.
His thirty minutes’speech embodied a
synopsis of the plans and purposes and
methods of the Republican party dur¬
ing the present administration, as it is
now the controlling factor of the ad¬
ministration and of congress. ilis re¬
marks called forth applause at frequent
intervals.
Col. J. M. PuPree was the hero of an
address in which geography, astrono¬
my, solar and terrestrial physics were
about as mercilessly slaughtered as
Oervern’s fleet at Santiago last Sun¬
day.
The magnanimous and generous
spirit of Hon E. B. Lewis was exhibit¬
ed by paying all the expenses of
delegates from the various counties,
giving them an evening’s ride over the
town and providing them with palace
cars to and from Lumpkin.
As this was the first congressional
con vention ever held in Lmnpkin, the
delegates were given a royal welcome
and the ladies were a conspicuous fea¬
ture of the occasion.

pleased to learn that there is at least
one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure
