FAITH IN HUMAN NATURE.
A New York Cafe That Reposes Implicit
Confidence In I,t« Customers.
Park It is rather surprisii;^ that fq find its right on
row a cafe trusts custom¬
ers perfectly. This place has probably
800 regular paljers. It is open day and
night, and is run on a system of im¬
plicit faith in the honesty of man.
While not a place strictly high class, it
offers what might be called a very
“comfortable” meal, with trimmings
before or after. Altogether, if is simply
a plain place for an everyday man, with
occasionally a little something extra
on the bill of fare equaling anything in
the city.
This, of course, can be said of hun¬
dreds of similar places, but the system
of payment is something novel. The
proprietor, a stout German, boasts no
cashier, as there is very little cash to
take in. On the cigar counter is a day¬
book. The customer comes in, goes to
the ice chest in the corner if he wisbos j
and takes a quiet nip out of a black
bottle. Then he orders what he wants
on the bill of fare. It is served quickly
and neatly. He then counts up his own
indebtedness and puts it opposite his
name iu tl\e book, including tho He “uiu, ”
or a cigar, if ho prefers that. then
walks serenely out, knowing no proprie¬
tor is faring at him gud no cashier
yelling for him to come back and make
the cash
This sort of childlike simplicity in
running a business in the very heart of
a city iiilpd with bricks bnnkoers, green goods
pen and gold without number
Is said to 'be a winning venture. Cus¬
tomers inyaiiably settle Friday
^ji.l Saturday being pay (lavs,) and, the
proprietor says he has as yet \o Rise a
bill through deliberate fraud. thgt A little
experience with a man like is, gl-
post enough to renew one’s, confidence
in human nature.—New Vork Letter in
Pittsburg Dispatch.

The following is a very sample method
for gold and silver plating: Take an
ouuge of nitrate of silver, which i»
made as follows: One ou W b of fine sil-
ver, one ounce nitric id, one-half
ounce water. Put the silver.into a Flor-
ence flask, Even pour m the acid and
water.'Place the flask ou the sand bath
fog a few moments, taking ogre not to
^pply too much bt>at, and as soon as
chemical action becomes violent remove
the flask to a cooler place antf allow the.
action to go on until it nearly slacks,
yriten, if there is any silver sfill remain-
aci,A employed is weak, it may be neces-
sjary to add a, little more. Tjje red fumes

The nitrate of silver formed during
til ^ pellicle appears op the surface,
it may be set aside to crystallize.
uncrystailized liquor should be
boured from the crystals into another
Vessel and heat applied until it has
evaporated *cn sufficiently to 'silver. crystallize,
you have nitrate of Take
(Li ounce of nitrate of silver, pissolve m
H,quart of distill^ rainwater. When
thoroughly dissolved, throw in a which few
ykystals of hyposulphite of soda,
Will at first form a brown precipitate,
but whioh becomes redissolved if enough
has been added. There
must be present a slight exacts of this
ga lt. The solution is now comploto.
Take a sponge, dip ft in the solution
and mb it over the work to be plated.
A solution of gold may be made in
the same way and applied as described.
A concentrated solution of either gold
or silver may be used for work that baa,
boon worn off by applying it with a,
camel’s hair brush and touching it with
a strip of zinc. The writer has used this
method with the most satisfactory suc¬
cess. The gold or silver used in making
must be perfectly fine,—Jewelers’ Cir-
