Nearly twenty five years ago the
people of Brattleboro, Vt., were
surprised one day at the finding
of the figure of an angel, molded in
soow, standing on one of their
streets. It was discovered that a
Brattleboro youth, Larkin G. Mead,
had done the work, and he was
helped topursue his artistic studies.
To-day, at his studio in Rome, this
American sculptor is making fur
Brattleboro a marble copy of the
snow angel which first brought him
into notice.
It is reported that Gen. Gordon

“Calamity" Laphain is the name
of a man who lives in Ottumwa
lowa. He acquired his unhappy
sobriquet from the numerous acci
dents of which lie was the victim.
He was shot a dozen or more tiroes
during the war: was run over by a
caisson and went to the Mississippi
river with a transport sunk at the
siege of Vicksburg. Since the war
he has had the cholera, small-pox,
yellow fever, been bitten by a snake
struck by lightning, and had three
ribs broken by a fa ding wall during
an earthquake in one of the South :
American states. A few day ago
his left hand was cut off in an Ot
