THE MESSEMEEII.
LAFAYETTE, GEORGIA.
Thursday Morning, March 10, ’Bl.
ANNOR XCEMEXT.
To the voters of Walker county:
It has been your misfortune to lose
liy the death of your Sheriff, a noble
man. At the election to he held March
20th, I offer myself ns a candidate. 1
cannot till his place, but I will do my
host. Respectfully,
W. M. McCi.atciiy.
Mr. C. I*. Goree, left Wednesday
for Chattanooga.
Court is being held in Summer
ville this week.
Messrs Copeland and Glenn, left
Tuesday to attend Court at Sum
merville this week.
John Davis Jr., we are author
ize to say, withdraws from the race
for Sheriff.
The great improvement in the
paper this week, is due to the edi
tor being in Summerville.
Court last week was a little like
the dog or short watch at sea—lt
was curtailed.
At Court last week the Wright
man was in the right place as So
licitor.
For Meal delivered to me at
Summerville, I will pay sixty-five
cents a bushel. W.M. Johnson.
Tenr.yson says “blow, bugle,
blow.” The Grand Jury says
“come buglar, come,” but he didn’t
come.
To show what good friends have
done for a little sheet we need only
say that we have nine hundred and
sixty-five subscribers.
We call attention to the com
munications on the 4th page of
'Senex,” “G. A. Hale,” Young Far
mer,” and “Allsorts.”
Our many sidid correspondent,
'•Allsorts” has struck a rich vein
that we hope he will continue to
w. rk.
Winter never rots in the sky.
That unoriginal truth was feeling
ly impressed on the sth on those
exposed to the blinding snow.
The serenaders on Wednesday
night of Co irt week made such an
impression on the Grand Jury that
they requested them to appear
again—also at August Court.
W. D. Mize wishes to say to his
friends and the country generally
that all who need his services as an
artist will find him at his poet, ev
ery Saturday.
Bob Jones the unimitabls gave a
few private performances. If be
w mid take the stage, and not let
his horses run away with him, he
c mid beat five thousand a year.
J. B. Pyror.’s One Price Empori
um Chattanooga, is Headquarters
in that city for corsets; offering
beautiful and perfect siting corsets,
at such low prices that every cus
tomer is astonished at their beauty
and and cheapness.
We are still unable to give “Log
gins” address. When last heard
from he was looking for “Pilgrim.”
Speaking of the latter it was sug
gested that he might be hid out
writing Pilgrim’s Progress. The
Solicitor thdbght that he was walk
ing it.
We published last week a squib
about the happiness of a man who
had got to love work. Gray heard
read it and said a man was happy,
who loved work. Our friend of
the auburn beard corrected him —
as he saw it the man who got to
courting (love) work, was the hap
py one. The last one caught the
right fish.
Taylor Crutchfield, who has been
a good son and brother, ha 3 again
been afficted. He was sent on last
Thursday in charge of Mr. N. F.
Jackson; and his brother-in-law Mr
Martin, to the Asylum, but after
going down they found the Asylum
full and were compelled to return
with him.
To seme of our subscribers we
had last week to do, much against
our will the uncourteous thing.
Subscriptions poured in, and al
though we were running a large
edition, we had to print fity-eight
half sheets, and still all were
not supp led. The liberal thing
was done by the people.
There is a character slightingly
spoken ol in Holy Writ—the mon
ey changer. They made us fill
that role last week. They kept us
busy. Some of the best men in
the county opened their doors to
the Messenger. To one and all,
who spoke a kind word, or did a
kind deed, we return our hearty
thanks.
Died on Wednesday March 2d
of typhoid pnnmonia after a short
illness, C. D. Gaines of Dirt Town.
J. B. I’yron, Chattanooga offer
tempting bargains it. shoes ofevery
description.
Died on Sunday Marc*' 6th Sum
merville of dropsy Miss Addicßusa
the only child of her widowed
Mother. May God comfort the
stricken.
John Day of Broom Town Chat
tooga Co. had the misfortune to
get his hand in contact with the
saws of the gin he was running. All
of the leaders tvero cut in two.
Strangers are fully protected by
the One Price system of selling
goods, used by J. B. Py/on, Chat
tanooga Tenn.
Messrs SorrelKt Anderson wishes
to announce to the public that
tbev will pay all churges on
Watches sent to them from any
Post Office, and gau ran tee a safe
delivery for anv work sent by the
mail carrier. We gau ran tee for 12
months.
We can reccomend them to the
public as competent workmen.
.1/arch 3rd Gmo.
The statistics given last week by
N. II Coker of that busy little bee
hive Trion, were very acceptable.
Our section is favored in having
such a market. The Messenger
is under many obligations there.
The circulation is in the healthiest
condition. The only thing needed
is more paper. We shall try and
supply Mr. Coker, if we have to
start a paper mill of our own.
A room is half furnished when a
carpet is on the lloor. J. B. Py
rt.n’s Department shows the hand
somest goods and by far the lowest
prices in Chattanooga.
It was our wish last week to
have spoken of the burial at Sum
merville of our lamented Sheriff
Capt. Joel Withers, of the honors
paid him at the grave by the Ma
sonic Fraternity, of the last token
of respect to the dead that was
shown by the large concourse pres
ent. But the sickness of our fore
man, made it impossible to have
the wish carried out.
The bar was ably represented—.l ttilgu
Payne loomed up, ami Col Shumate is
ready to play the part of David. Col.
llaekett knew when our worthy
Solicitor Wright was right, the lion.-
John W. Maddox always pleasant yet
half Mad, ws here with Madison Ilenrv
whom we rccomend to the girls’! they
want a good lawyer for a husband.
From across the line, we laid J. M.
Kobertson, the quick and ready,
Church Goree, who is steadily coming
to the front. Lastly, Hob Jones, who
knows better than anybody else how to
deline a nolle prosiqui, and to tile an
effectual cross hill, was not absent.
Col. Dabney was looking after some
important cases in Gordon.
We failed to speak of the broth
erly hands we had the pleasure of
slinking last week. Whitman of
the Citizen, the neatest sheet in the
Forth Estate—Lumpkin, who is
Rising with the Fawn, and who
lias a whole state for his pasture—
and Mcllan, of the cheering Sun,
were all here- The Captain stood
the racket when racket meant mis
chief, but when Bob. Jones lnnded
him a package of fine cut tobacco,
and as lie opened it, instead of to
bacco, out sprang an unknown
monster, the jump that he made,
showed that he believed in active
measures.
J. B. Pyron, of Chattanooga, does
the right thing—he has but one
price for the rich and the poor, for
the ignorant and the posted. He
has stuck to this idea and his cus
tomers have stuck to him. His
business is growing. It is growing
sideways, upwards, and all sort, of
ways. The other day he wanted
another clever salesman, and he
was fortunate. He secured the
the services of as pleasant,
as obliging and honest a man as
good old Chattooga has ever pro
duced, Z:ich T. Allman. Look for
205 and 207 Market street and give
him a call,
Court has broke, the county in
its force has been here and gone,
the noise has died away, and we
are left to cogitate. As we all know
there was a a good deal of uncon
trolled license here. The town was
lively, the serenaders were out in
force, and the imitation of the Com
anchep were excellent. The situa
tion was unfortunate. The Mir
shai had been called up higher,
and was obliged to turn his back
on the duties of the Marshalship.
The clever hoys, with whom the
whisky was in and the witout knew
that the night and town was theirs
and there was no help for it. But
forewarned ought to be forearmed.
The Town Commissioners are re
sponsible for the order kept in the
town, and we believe that they will
see that the like will never occur
again.

Frieks Gap—We think the no fence
system would only be tolerable up
here; nevertheless it would be a bene
fit to old men, who have a scanty sup
ply «of timber, as well as to widows
who have lost their help, and whose
land, worn down in spots, does no:
remunerate anv one sufficiently to
justify tillage. It lias to be kept in
closed for the good spots. We could
take our rails and fence our sproutv
knolls and get rid of the sprouts by
confining stock on them: and it would
soon put an end to fence breaks. When
stock are raised under a good fence,
even mules will not try hard to go over.
1 have proof of that at home; but
where fences are delapidated and
corners grown tip with weeds, cattle
begin to nip and reach further and
f r.her until down tumbles the wreck;
then in go all present, Somebody is mad

this subject, hut do not know whether
it is likely to entertain any one ot
not.
