greater part of Bt. Johns, New
foundland, Law been wiped out by
fire. About 4 o’clock yesterday
afternoon a bouse on Long’s bill
was discovered to be on fire. The
firemen responded promptly to
tbo alarm, but when they arrived
the southwest wind that prevailed
bad caused the fire to spread to
an adjoining building, which was
then burning furiously. Desper
ate efforts were made to stay the
progress of the fire, but it was
soon seen that they would prove
fruitless, Most of tbo houses on
Long's hill wore very old wooden
ones and they burned with groat
rapidity. Largo burning brands
wore caught up by the wind and
carried to the roofs of other
structures, which were soon burn
ing furiously.
A COLLEGE mniNED.
While these dwelling houses
were burning unhindered it was
found that the new Methodist col
lege was on fire. Efforts were
made to save this building, but
they were fruitless.
Hy this time the wind was blow
ing a gale and the fire was spread
ing with appalling rapidity, build
ings situated some distance from
the burning structures caught tiro
from burning embers and were de
stroyed without a hand being
raised to attempt to save them.
The firemen and people were com
pletely paralyzed, and the fire did
Us work of destruction unhin
dered.
It was then growing dark and
the scene was magnificently beau
tiful, though appalling, build
ing after building caught fire and
the whole city was as light as day.
The roar of the flames was terri
ble, and the heat was so intense
that it was impossible to get any
where near the burning buildings.
Now and then high and heavy
walls would full, and then ‘im
mense masses of burning embers
would soar upward to be caught
by the gale and carried elsewhere
to add other buildings to the con
flagration. Men, women and chil
dren ran about in terror, and
thieves, taking advantage of the
confusion, entered houses that
bad been deserted by their occu
pants and stole whatever they
could lay their hands on and car
ry off.
The Masonic temple, Orange
hall, Roman Catholic cathedral
and bishop’s palace, St. Patrick's
hall, English cathedral, the athe
meum, the kirk, the Commercial
bank, the Union bank, the Atlan
tic hotel and Linberg’s brewery
all fell a prey to the devouring
element. The English cathedral
was a magnificent structure and
was considered the finest piece of
architecture on thin continent. It
was yet incomplete, though it had
been fifty years’in building. Near
ly all these buildings were in the
center of the city and before long
they were nothing but masses of
smoking ruins. In addition to
these the court house, police
headquarters and Government
savings bank were destroyed, as
were also the Presbyterian church
and the office of the Telegram.
Flames were then raging with
increasing vigor in the direction
of the water front, and in a very
short time were eating up the
warehouses along the wharves.
Shipping lying at the wharves
had been warned of their danger,
and the crews of the various ves
sels hastily cast off their lines and
took their craft cutside the har
bor.
This morning the tire communi
cated to the seal oil factories and
stores, and the whole south side
of the city was burning.
The principal street of St.
Johns is more than a mile in
length and every building on it
was of stone or brick. After the
lire in 184t>, the authorities re
fused to permit wooden buildings
to be erected on the street. This
street has been practically de
stroyed.
From what can bo judged from
reports received here, it is esti
mated that at least 15,0 M persons
are homeless.
It is estimated that the insur
ance on tho buildings destroyed
and on stock will amount to £4,-
000,000, which sum will cover
about half of the loss.

West Point, Miss., July 13—De
vastation and distress are the re
sult of the great floods caused by
the unprecedented rains last week.
The rains still continue. The
Tombigbeo has left its banks and
the country is flooded, destroying
thousands of acres of fine cotton
and corn and sweeping away all
bridges erected since the April
floods. Nearly all the cotton in
this section is a total loss. Other
crops fare just as badly. The
damage will not fall short of four
hundred thousand dollars. Hun
dreds of families are on the verge
of starvation and appeals for help
are coining in almost hourly. An
urgent appeal has come from
VNaverly, five miles east, where
4,000 acres of crops are under
water, houses washed away and
the negroes starving. Nearly a
carload of provisions was shipped
at onco. Clay county will suffer
almost a total loss of crops this
year. In Noxubee county the
crops wero finer than known in
years,Jbut the destruction there is
as great as here. Between
Brooksville and Scooba, seveutv
livo miles, and for miles on each
side of the Mobile and Ohio Rail
road, cotton is entirely drowned
out and only the tops of the c un
can be seen. Appeals for help
from the starving people come in
and the demand cannot bo satis
fied. This country never lias
known such destruction and want
as now prevail and is growing
worse instead of better. Help
must soon bo asked from the out
side world.
We’ll write it down till every
body see it.
Till everybody is sick of seeing
it.
Till everybody Knows it without
seeing it—

Tn perfect faith, its makers,
the World’s Dispensary Medical
Association of Buffalo, N. Y., of
fer to pay SSOO to any one sutl'er
ing from chronic catarrh in the
head whom they cannot cure.
Now if the conditions wore re
versed—if they asked you to pay
SSOO for a positive euro you might
hesitate. Hero are reputable
men, with years of honorable
dealing; thousands of dollars and
a great name back of them and
they say “Wo can cure you be
cause wo’ye cured thousands of
others like you—if we can’t we
will pay yon SSOO for the knowl- j
edge that thero’s one whom we
can’t cure.”
They believe in themselves.
Isn't it worth a trial. Isn't any
trial preferable to catarrh?
Swept by a Tornmlo.
Springfield. ()., July 13.—The j
most destructive tornado which
oyer visited this section of the
country struck the southeastern
portion this morning at 11 o’clock
and completely demolished about
30 residences and partially ruined
over a hundred more. But two
persons are possibly fatally in- j
jured, but the loss of property is
appalling. A conservative esti
mate places the loss at between
one hundred .rod fifty and two
hundred thousand dollars.
I have been a great sufferer
from catarrh for over ten years;
had it very bad. could hardly
breathe. Some nights I could
not sleep and had to walk the
floor. I purchased Ely’s Cream
Balm amt aiu using it freely, it is
working a cure surely. 1 have
advised several friends to use it,
and with happy results iu every
ease. It is the medicine above
all others for catarrh, and it is
worth its weight in gold. I thank
God 1 have found a remedy I can
use with safety and that does all
that is claimed for it. It is curing
my deafness.—B. W. Sperry,

There is nothing unusual in
hair turning white, but a case in
which the hair turned black again
after being white was recently
told by a gentleman from Detroit.
A lady of that city originally had
black eves anil hair, but in the
course of time, when she had at
tained the age of about 70 years,
ber hair turned pure white. This
was expected, but about a year
ago her hair began darkening,
and now it is as black as jet.
There is no doubt about the
change, nor was any artificial
means used to produce it.

Over three thousand miles of

As there is no royal road to

magic as can be expected of any
