THINKS DEMOCRATS SHOULD
DRAW PARTY LINES
Rossville, Ga. t
Ed. Messenger:—
I Some time ago Mr. John B. Hen
derson made some suggestions in your
paper in regard to thf Democratic
primary elections. John B. is an old
time Democrat and a man whose
judgment I have always valued very
highly but he is wrong about this pri
mary election. The Democrats have
not had a primary since I have been
living in this county and I have been
here since 1910.
The Republicans work and vote in
the primary and very often control
it, A man from one of our sister coun
ties spoke to me the other day of a
Republican who had served on the
Democratic Executive Committee.
Now I am not finding fault with the
Republican. I admire the way he has
.handled the situation. They are laugh
ing all over the county about it.
Our sentinels have gone to sleep
on post, and the enemy has crept
through the lines.
I have always voted the Democrat
ic ticket and I don't fall out with the
other feHow for the way he votes. I
believe it is best for the country to
have two parties. I have no fault to
find with the men nominated in the
last primary. But why call it a Demo
fcratic primary when a Republican
steps up after a Democrat and says
“I’ll just kill your vote.” The Repub
lican may vote for the best man, but
is the man selected, the Democratic
nominee? Why have a primary? It
puts men and women to a lets of trou
ble.
I don’t know much about the Demo
cratic machinery, but it seems to me,
she needs the attention of an expert
mechanic.
I would like for some good old
Democrat to answer the following
questions:
What is the purpose of a Democrat
ic primary?
Whose duty is it to look after the
primary election?
Just how are these men selected?
Should we allow Republicans to
vote in a Democratic primary?
Now, I am talking from the north
end of the county. You may not have
the same conditions in your district.
I wonder if the Republicans would
let a Democrat vote in one of their
conventions.
E. G. CARROLL.

LAFAYETTE SCItOOL NOTES' I
By Maude Arnold
The Seventh District Meet held in
Dalton April )Stl an.l °th, 1924 ha;
in store several pleasant surprises
for LaFayette High.v
We were exceedingly well pleased
with the success scored by Miss Nan
nie Anna Stewart, who was awarded
first place in Ready-Writing for the
girls. We are grateful to our Seniors
who placed us second in the Spelling
contest. Another individual, also a
Senior, aided us in securing second
place in literary events, namely, R. A.
Duke, who won third place in Ready-
Writing for Boys. The student body
is justly proud of Hoke Smith who
gave us third place in shot put.
The comparison of points which the
various schools made will easily show
the remarkable record LaFayette
High attained:
Athletic Events
Cedartown, 0; Cartersville, 0; Adairs
ville, 1-2; LaFayette, 1; Berry, 4;
Calhoun, 6; Marietta, 11 1-2; Dalton,
15; Darlington, 20; Rome, 26.
Literary Events
Acworth, 0; Marietta, 0; Rome, 0;
Buchanan, 1; Adairsville, 8; Carters
ville, 3; Darlington, 5; Berry, 6; Ce
dartown, 8; Calhoun, 9; LaFayette, 9;
Dalton, 10.
Although we did not reach the
heighth of first place in each event,
we feel all the more in earnest to ac
complish those long sought for cups
in 1925. Those who are planning to
go to Rome next year as representa
tives in athletics will begin practice
this season, so as to be in perfect
condition and “walk off” with the
trophy.
The LaFayette High School would
like as many as possible to go to
Athens in June to the State meet and
help boost Miss Stewart.
