ber of their friends, both old and
young, who had responded to in¬
vitations to be present. Music

Died in Chattanooga.
On the 23rd, of last month
Mrs-. Gertrude Hicks, wife of
1. R. Hicks, died at tlieir home
in Chattanooga Tenn.
Mrs. Hicks was well know n
here, where she numbered her
friends by the score. She was
the oldest daughter of Capt. W.
W. Giddens, a fine gentleman
and lawyer of high standing, who
for a number of years before his
death was a prosperous and high¬
ly esteemed citizen of Spring
Place. Mrs. Hicks, as Miss Ger¬
trude Giddens spent her girl
hood days in Spring Place, where
she was very popular. She was
married on February 20th, 1883
to I. R. Hicks, who was editor of
The North Ga., Tunes, now The
Murray News. We extend sym-j
pathy to the bereaved family
and friends. 1

Hartley-Pierce Weding.
On Tuesday Feby., 23rd, at 6
p m. at the home of W. D. Greg¬
ory, near Cohutta Springs, Mr,
Lawson A. Hartley and Miss
Johnnie Maddox fPierce were
happily united in the bonds of
holy matrimony, Rev. G. B. Bar¬
ton officiating, in his usual pleas¬
ing style. Quite a number of
friends witnessed the ceremony,

The happy couple left immedi¬
ately after supper, which was
served at (5:80, for Crandall to
take the 8 o’clock fast train for
Cincinnati.
At Crandall they were very
pleasantly entertained while
waiting for the train by a rous¬
ing serenade from nearly all the
citizens of the town who had
gathered at the depot with all
the belis from Whitson’s saw
mill to Beard’s cattle ranch.
How the music did ring out on
the air; How the* passengers on
the iucoming train did raise the
windows and stare!
Mr. Hartley and his bride will
visit Cincinnati, Louisville and
other Ohio river cities before
their return to Tennga Ga,, which
will be their future home.
The young couple have the best
wishes of their hosts of friends.

Health in this community is
fairly good at present. There
are a few' cases of whooping
cough but no one seems to be
dangerously ill of it.
Mrs. Sarah Brown, of Cliatta

Our school is progressing very
nicely indeed, under the skillful
management of Prof. Will Smith
as principal and Miss Gregory as
assitant. Quite a large number
of students are enrolled,

afternoon.
Mr. Brown, of Kentucky, was
the guest of Miss Ophelia Plem
ons Sunday.
Misses Lizzie and Hattie
Wright, of Zion Hill, were in
town Sunday.
Homer Daris, of Eton and
Miss Josie Riordon attended
preaching here Sunday night,
Mr. McCollum, of Kentucky,
visited relatives here recently,
Grover Bates called on his
best girl Sunday afternoon.
Quite a lot of our citizens
last week in Spring Place,
Charlie Howell, of Fairy, was
friends here Sunday.
It was announced here
Sunday that there would be an
all day singing here the third
Sunday in April. The singing
will he in the old books. Every
body come and bring with you a
well tilled basket of dinner.

nooga, is attending the bedside
of her mother, Mrs. Gns Hill,
who has been very ill for the past
few days, but is convalescing.
Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Davis arc
removing to their former home
on East Side.
Dr. G. D. Keith returned
Atlanta Tuesday after a week's
visit to homefolks.
Messrs. C. I), and P. C. Hill,
of Etowah, spent a few days here
the first of the week with home
folks.
The Methodists of this vicinity
are contemplating erecting a new
church building at this place in
the near future.
Dr. S. A. Brown made a bust
ness trip to Atlanta Monday.
A thief visited the store of
Ohas. M, Harris on Saturday
night, taking the change in the
cash drawer and several other
small articles. The damage was
slight.
Tnere will be a Box Supper
here Saturday March the Oth, for
the benefit of the Base Ball Club.
Every one is cordially invited to
come. The committee on enter¬
tainment has arranged a niee
programme for tins occasion.
Eton High School is in a flour¬
ishing condition.
Capt. A. Gilbert, of London
Eng., is in the city on business.

ganized at Mt. Pisgab, conduct

tended each Sunday. We glad¬
ly welcome Mr. Kerr to our lit¬
tle town. All are invited to at¬
tend every Sunday evening at
2 o’clock.
