FAMOUS WAX ARTIST
Mme. Tussdud Had an Exciting
and Dramatic Career.
<N THE FRENCH REVOLUTION.
During That Era of Bloodshed She
Modeled Some of the Heads That Fell
by the Guillotine and Was For a
Tipie In Prison Herself as a Suspect.
This i# On* story of Mute. Tussaitid,
who was 'corn in Borne In 1700 and
died in London in 1.H50. and win,, ditf
insr the stormy lime of the French rev¬
olution. modeled in wax some of the
heads flint fell t>y the guillotine.
Marie Gresboltz was the daughter of
an aid-de-camp of General Wiirnmer
in the Seven Years' war. She was
born after the death of her father.
Her mother was the sister of Dr,
John Christopher Curtins of Berne
This Dr. Curtins bad made many
anatomical and fetter models in wax
and had attracted the attention of the
Prince de Conti. Tilt* nobleman urged
Curtins to come to Paris and establish
himself as a modeler in wax.
The Curtins studio became (lie ren¬
dezvous of the fashionable world, and
In connection with tills he had n muse¬
um of curiosities. Among ids patrons
were Voltaire, Jean Jacques. Rous
seau. Mestncr, Mira beau, Diderot, Ben
jamln Franklin, Paul Jones and many
other notable persons.
In his visits to his sister at Berne
Dr- Curtins had taught Ids niece, Marie,
many of the secrets of modeling in
wax. She showed such ability in this
that her uncle urged her mother to
make a home with kirn in Paris and to
allow him to adopt Marie ns bis daugii
ter.
Marie began earnest study with Dr
Cut’Hus, and she was so skillful hi
the modeling of wax flowers that this
art became n craze. Even the royal
personages in the palace took it up.
and Marie spent some time giving les¬
sons to Mine. Elizabeth, the young elm
ter of Louis XVI.
When tit j revolution broke out Dr.
Curtins took the side of the people uud
sent for Marie to come from the pal
ace» it was rather singular that two
of his wax models should have played
a foremost part in the opening scenes
of that awful period, in his roiiec
tlou of models was a bust of tile min¬
ister. Neeker, father of Mine, de Stud,
and one of prtilppe. dnke of Or
leans. Two days before the storming
of the Bastille a mob took these two
busts from his museum in the Pula is
Royal, draped them in black crape to
show their sympathy .and started to
parade the streets with these. i
As the procession tiled across the
Place Vendome a troop of dragoons
and one of the regiments charged. A
sword stroke cut the bust of Neeker
in halves, uud the man who was carry¬
ing R was ilit by a musket bail in the
leg and received the thrust of a sword
in his breast.
The bust of tlie Duke of Orleans
escaped injury, but In the light to do
fend it several persons were killed.
Die soldiers made desperate efforts to
demolish it.
At the taking of tile Bastille Dr. Cur
tius was active and for his services to
France was rewarded by the national
assembly. A badge of honor was pre¬
sented to hint, and this was inscribed
with (lie famous date and a memorial
of his bravery and patriotism, HD
bouse was a favorite place of meeting
with the leaders of the revolution, so
Marie had no opportunity to see them
all.
There was only one time when Marie
was in any danger during tiiis des¬
perate period. She was “suspected"
and sent to prison. Here at the same
time was Male, de Ueauharnais. who
lmd barely escaped the guillotine and
who was Inter the Josephine of Napo¬
leon Bonaparte. Ber’uncle was able
to ger Marie’s release from prison, and
she came out in time to see the down¬
fall of Robespierre. Dantou and Des¬
moulins.
!u the days of their- power she had
been called to model the heads of
many who fell by the guillotine. Flic
was obliged to take them just after the
fall of the fatal knife. She did tliiv
awful work with the heads of poor
Marie Antoinette and of- the Princess
1 at tuba lie. the queen's friend. When
the leaders suffered by the gnHiolbie
in their turn she modeled their heads
After the revolution her uncle died,
and in 1795 she married M. Tussand
She could not overcome the shock of
her experiences during the revolution,
and she persuaded her husband to
lake her and the valuable collections
of wax models left her by Dr, Curtins
over to Bug I and.
They established this collection in
the Strand. The collection was taken
all about the country, and in it
was brought back to London and made
a permanent exhibition. Her sons con
ducted the business, and she took an
active share in tiiis til! she was eighty
years of age.-Boston Globe.

Eat What
You want of the food you need
• Kodoi will digest it.
You need a sufficient amount of
good wholesome food and more than
this you need to fully digest it.
Else you can’t gain strength, nor
can you strengthen your stomach if
it is weak.
You must eat in order to live and
maintain strength.
You must not diet, because t he
body requires that you eat a suffic¬
ient amount of food regularly.
But this food must he digested,
and it must be digested thoroughly.
When the stomach can’t do it,
you must take something that will
help the stomach.
The proper way to do is to eat
what you want, and let Kodoi di¬
gest the food.
TTothing else can do this. When
the stomach is weak it needs help;
you must help it by giving it rest,
and Kodoi will do that.
